A Trick is to Jinx as Jinx is to Curse as Curse is to Cross as Cross is to Goofer...

How can I curse thee? Let me count the ways...hex, bind, curse, jinx, trick, cross, goofer ... all ways of saying something very similar in the Voodoo hoodoo vernacular. But just what is a curse, exactly? And what's more important to many I am sure, just how does one go about puttin' the bad mojo on someone?

A curse is the effective action of some power, or result from a spell or prayer, asking that a god, natural force, or spirit bring misfortune to someone. In Voodoo, to perform such a "trick" is to work the left hand of Voodoo. They are considered black magic spells because they are concerned with hurting, harming, goofering, jinxing, or hot footing enemies.

On the other hand, certain types of spells can be used to repel negative energy, to keep a perpetrator from hurting someone, or for driving away bad neighbors.

This lens provides a survey of the Voodoo curse, particularly as it pertains to New Orleans Voodoo and southern folklore. You will find there is a language that is used that sets this type of magic apart from other forms, and that makes it identifiably hoodoo. In fact, hexing, jinxing, crossing, cursing, and hot-footing are characteristically hoodoo in origin, and have nothing to do with the Voodoo religion itself.

New Orleans Voodoo is nothing to play around with. Despite the fact that many dismiss the legitimacy of it's power, approximately 17% of the population in New Orleans currently practice Voodoo, and many more respect its power.

Please note that the information contained in this lens is meant for information and educational purposes only. You are advised to think very seriously before attempting to perform any of the spells provided and to consider the Law of Three, which states that everything you do will come back to you threefold.

Alas, do not email me with requests to perform a hex or curse on someone. I am not a left hand practitioner and will not answer your email, so don't waste your time or mine.

You have been duly warned!

The Original Curse

The Original Curse

And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.

And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

"The so-called dark side is not wholly an evil or negative place or force; after all, some things remain in the shadows because we've placed them there out of fear or squeamishness." -- Jay Kinney

A Brief History of New Orleans Voodoo

New Orleans Voodoo is a conglomeration of cultural and spiritual belief systems strongly influenced by the ancient Voodoo religion of Africa, the Vodou religion of Haiti, the healing arts of Native American people, the folk magic of Europe, and Catholicism. Voodoo has its roots in the trauma of many people. It originated from the African ancestors who were brought to the Caribbean in bondage.

In 1697 the French acquired one third of Hispaniola and worked the slaves literally to death. The average survival rate of slaves at that time was only about 10 years. This made the slave population ripe for continual replenishment, and the slave population grew from several thousand to half a million. The slave population was extremely diverse with many different tribes representing many religions, languages, and belief systems. It is during this time of the French occupation that the basic structure of Voodoo as we know it today developed.

The colonizers believed that by separating families and individual nations, the slave population would not unite as one people. On the contrary, the Africans found commonalities in their belief systems and religions and began invoking their own spirits and practicing each other's religious rites. In addition, the surviving Taino Indians exerted some influence over the practice of Voodoo, especially in the area of the healing arts. As well, the indentured servants of Europe brought their folk magic, which was incorporated into the Voodoo religion. The Roman Catholic Church insisted on treating the slaves better and had them baptized and instructed in the practice of Catholicism (Hanger, 1997). The slave population soon began to mask their rituals and beliefs in Catholicism. It is the conglomeration and syncretism of these diverse cultural belief systems that comprised the first Creole religion and makes Voodoo what it is today.

Voodoo ceremonies were held every Sunday afternoon, a free day for slaves, in the meeting place Congo Square. Ceremonies were also held along Bayou St. John and Lake Pontchartrain.

The most revered practitioner of Voodoo was Marie Laveau, a freewoman of African, Indian, French and Spanish descent. Laveau was a devout Catholic who is said to have attended mass every day, and was allowed to hold voodoo rituals behind St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans' French Quarter.

To make a very long story short, the slaves eventually rebelled and drove out the French and the Catholic Church. Years of oppression and persecution followed, with the Voodoo considered Satanism by the Catholic church and evangelical Protestants. This caused Voodoo to go underground and flourish. The Catholic church eventually made peace with the Voodoo and it is now accepted as an established religion.

Four Thieves Vinegar

A New Orleans Voodoo Hoodoo Spell Staple

During the time of the Black Plague a family of perfumers robbed the dead. As perfumers they knew well the antiseptic essential oils, and they infused them in vinegar and rubbed them on their bodies; by doing so they protected themselves from certain death. The doctors of the time used the same herbs and essential oils to protect themselves while tending so many who were contagious. They wore big cloaks over their heads that reached down well below their shoulders. Attached to the cloak over the nose and mouth was a 10" long canoe-like shaped beak full of antiseptic herbs and essential oils. Here is the famous Vinegar of The Four Thieves recipe; it is sometimes called Grave Robber's Blend.

Four Thieves Vinegar Recipe

1 gallon apple cider vinegar
Garlic cloves, crushed or whole
Black peppercorns, crushed
Black mustard seed, crushed
Red pepper, crushed

Mix everything in an airtight jar and set aside for six weeks. Strain the liquid into another container to bottle your homemade Four Thieves Vinegar.

Marie Laveau Curse

From Mules and Men by Zora Neal Hurston

Set the altar for a curse with black candles that have been dressed in vinegar. Write the name of the person to be cursed on the candle with a needle. Then, place fifteen cents in the lap of Death upon the altar to pay the spirit to obey your orders. Place your hands flat upon the table and say the curse-prayer.

"To The Man God: Oh great One, I have been sorely tried by my enemies and have been blasphemed and lied against. My good thoughts and my honest actions have been turned to bad actions and dishonest ideas. My home has been disrespected, my children have been cursed and ill-treated. My dear ones have been back-bitten and their virtue questioned. O Man God, I beg that this that I ask for my enemies shall come to pass: That the South wind shall scorch their bodies and make them wither and shall not be tempered to them. That the North wind shall freeze their blood and numb their muscles and that it shall not be tempered to them. That the West wind shall blow away their life's breath and will not leave their hair grow, and that their finger nails shall fall off and their bones shall crumble. That the East wind shall make their minds grow dark, their sight shall fail and their seed dry up so that they shall not multiply.

I ask that their fathers and mothers from their furthest generation will not intercede for them before the great throne, and the wombs of their women shall not bear fruit except for strangers, and that they shall become extinct. I pray that the children who come shall be weak of mind and paralyzed of limb and that they themselves shall curse them in their turn for ever turning the breath of life into their bodies. I pray that disease and death shall be forever with them and that their worldly goods shall not prosper, and that their crops shall not multiply and that their cows, their sheep, and their hogs and all their living beasts shall die of starvation and thirst. I pray that their house shall be unroofed and that the rain, the thunder and lightning shall find the innermost recesses of their home and that the foundation shall crumble and the floods tear it asunder. I pray that the sun shall not shed its rays on them in benevolence, but instead it shall beat down on them and burn them and destroy them. I pray that the moon shall not give them peace, but instead shall deride them and decry them and cause their minds to shrivel. I pray that their friends shall betray them and cause them loss of power, of gold and of silver, and that their enemies shall smite them until they beg for mercy which shall not be given them. I pray that their tongues shall forget how to speak in sweet words, and that it shall be paralyzed and that all about them will be desolation, pestilence and death. 0 Man God, I ask you for all these things because they have dragged me in the dust and destroyed my good name; broken my heart and caused me to curse the day that I was born. So be it."

Mysterious Marie Laveau Voodoo Queen and Folk Tales Along the Mississippi

by Raymond Martinez

Mysterious Marie Laveau Voodoo Queen and Folk Tales Along the Mississippi

Review By A Customer

If you're looking for an accurate history of Marie LaVeau, or insight into real Voodoo, this is not the book for you. Read "Jambalaya" by Luisah Teish instead.

However, if you want to step back in time to 1950's racism--complete with the N-word--and dark rumors about Voodoo, this is the book to read. Frankly, I was horrified to note Martinez' condescending, sometimes sneering, stereotypes. This book is already in my stack of paper to recycle.

For example, Martinez says that a loincloth is "the customary dress of the Negroes in Haiti, and for that matter, South Africa and most tropical countries." And, he advises us that Marie LaVeau's snake, Zombi, "fed only upon fair and tender children."

In describing Voodoo, Martinez claims, "Marie's rituals were, of course, so outrageously vulgar that children were forbidden to witness them...no person who pretended to be self-respecting could admit that so depraved a performance was enjoyable or even interesting."

But, as another reviewer noted, you can use this book to locate newspaper articles from Marie LaVeau's era. Otherwise, it's a waste of paper, unless you want to see what once passed for a generous and kindly attitude towards people and traditions of African descent.

Ideas for Crossing, Cursing, Revenge & Getting Rid of an Enemy

  1. Burn dressed Black candles on your enemy for 9 consecutive days.
  2. Throw a crossing powder of goofer dust down in the path of your enemy on a regular basis. Do so in a place where they will track the "mess" into their home.
  3. Burn the photo or name of your enemy for a period of nine consecutive days in Get Away incense. Mix the ash with the dirt from the enemies footprint and goofer dust or hotfoot powder. Sprinkle in moving water or the crossroads to make them go away.
  4. If someone is bothering you and you don't want them to, you take a handful of salt and call their name and throw it over your right shoulder and they will not bother you.
  5. To dominate and control someone, get something personal of theirs and stop it up in a bottle with roots and nails, pins, or needles. Ill fortune will befall them.

Utterly Wicked by Dorothy Morrison

Curses, Hexes & Other Unsavory Notions

Utterly Wicked: Curses, Hexes & Other Unsavory Notions

Hexes, curses and other unsavory notions. Most magical practitioners won't even discuss them. Why? Because they'd much rather find a positive solution that benefits all concerned. And, there's nothing wrong with that. Occasionally, though, our problems are such that nothing in the positive solution arena will handle them. It's time to make a decision to stand tough, be strong, and take definitive action to defend ourselves. And, if you're ready to do that-if you're ready to own that action and take responsibility for it-then Utterly Wicked is the book for you! Jam-packed with more than one hundred rituals, incantations, hexes and curses, this book is the quintessential primer for learning all those magical tricks that no one wants to talk about. Do you know the proper way to enter a cemetery? Utterly Wicked tells you how, as well as the proper methods for collecting and using graveyard dirt. Explore the little known secrets of the 11" fashion doll and see why it's become such a valuable magical tool. Then learn to prepare Hot Foot Powder, Four Thieves Vinegar, Goofer Dust, and other magical components specifically designed to obliterate your toughest problems. Most important, though, you'll also find the tools to protect yourself, your family, and your home from ever being bothered with these sorts of difficulties again. A must have for any Witch's bookshelf!

Banishment and Equalizer Spell

The following is part of a banishment and equalizer spell. The whole thing is too long to put here, but this is the meat and potatoes of the spell. It is hoodoo in origin.

This spell asks God to be the mediator between you and your enemy by protecting you and punishing the person who hurt you.

This spell can be used as a means to settle the score with an enemy, by causing them to be ostracized, resulting in mental anguish, and eventually going away. Since you are asking God to intervene for you, you are not subject to any ill effects or bad karma.

Write the name of your target on the parchment paper and anoint with Black Arts oil. Tuck the paper into the Voodoo doll. Recite Psalm 55 nine times over the doll, and stick one pin through the parchment paper and into the doll. Wrap the doll in a black cloth and hide in a dark place, careful to choose a place where no one can find it and handle it.

"To keep a person from hoodooing you, keep red pepper in your shoe all the time."

"If you keep a silver dime in your mouth, no man can poison you."

"If you will take a dime and bore a hole in it and wear it all the time on you somewhere, you can't be hoodoo."

"If you wear a dime in the heel of your shoe, your enemies cannot put a spell on you."

"Grave dust is what a witch uses to hoodoo you, and you will conquer her if you get some and wear it."

"If you think someone has put something down for you to walk over, you take a piece of brown paper, put some red pepper in the brown paper, put it in your shoes, and when you walk over it, it will do you no harm."

ART AND CRAFT OF CONJURE

My Favorite Hoodoo Books

If you really want to learn how to lay down tricks, these books are a must for your library

Hoodoo Mysteries: Folk Magic, Mysticism & Rituals
by Ray T. Malbrough

This is one of my all-time favorite hoodoo books, and is written from an insider perspective by an authentic practitioner. This is true American folk magic, colorful and powerful, yet little-known outside of the bayous and backwoods of Louisiana. Conjuring money and attracting love, reversing hexes and stopping slander-it's all in a day's work for the Hoodoo practitioner.

Ray T. Malbrough was born in New Orleans and was raised in the "Pays des Cajuns" Region of southeastern Louisiana. He learned the basics of hoodoo in his early teens with the permission and encouragement of his mother. At age 19, he started working in a New Orleans tearoom as a reader/advisor, and has since earned a good reputation as a Hoodoo worker all over the region surrounding his hometown of Houma. He is a 1982 graduate of the Seax-Wica Seminary founded and directed by Dr. Raymond Buckland. The author is active in the parapsychology Association in Thibodeaux, Louisiana. Today, Ray is a full time reader/advisor and hoodoo worker in his home in Houma. I highly recommend this book.

Voodoo and Hoodoo: The Craft as Revealed by Traditional Practioners

Voodoo and Hoodoo tells how these spiritual descendents of African medicine men and sorcerers lay tricks and work their magic and explains the hold these practices have had on their believers, from their Old World origins until today. Haskins himself is not a practitioner, so there is a lot left out about the specifics of "how-to". Nonetheless, this book has the flavor of authenticity as the spells he provides are in the words of those who are conjure men and women.

Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic: A Materia Magica of African-American Conjure
by Catherine Yronwode

Yes, this is the second time this book appears on this lens, which is evidence of how much I like this book. Not only is it first book of its kind, it presents accurate botanical information about 500 herbs, roots, minerals, and rare zoological curios employed in the art of conjure, with sample spells that will show you how to make and use your own mojo bags, spiritual baths, and incenses. The only thing I wish was included in this book is color photographs of the plants and roots. There are 50 black and white illustrations; however, they do little to complement the fantastic descriptions provided by Yronwode. Still, this is an absolute must have for anyone serious about learning the art and craft of conjure.

The author, Catherine Yronwode, is the proprietor of the Lucky Mojo Curio Company, a manufactory for traditional herb-based spiritual supplies. A former staff editor for Organic Gardening Magazine, she has written extensively on subjects as diverse as gardening, home crafts, antiques and collectibles, comic books, rural music, and other aspects of popular culture.

Battle Prayer To Break a Generational Curse Line

By Mike Bradley

In the realm of spiritual warfare against demonic spirits - one of the ways that demons can enter into a person's life is through a generational curse line. A curse line can be formed out between a parent and a child if that parent has engaged and crossed over into any type of heavier transgression against the Lord.

The Bible tells us that the sins of the father can be "visited" down the blood line of 3 or 4 generations of future children. The Bible tells us that the wages of sin will always be death. As a result of a sinning parents severe transgressions against the Lord - sometimes demons will be allowed to attach to the sinning parent - and then they will attempt to jump and transfer onto some of the children to form out this curse line.

If that curse line gets formed out - then the demons will follow that child into his adult life and try to get him to commit the same type of sins his sinning parent may have been committing. That is why alcoholic fathers sometimes produce children that also end up becoming alcoholics themselves - all as a result of a curse line that had formed out between the sinning parent and the child - with demons feeding and operating on that curse line trying to influence the child to go in the same direction as his father has been going in.

Here are the 6 steps that will need to be taken in order to properly break a curse line:

1. The first thing you will have to do is be willing to make a full surrender of you and your entire life over to the Lord. The Bible tells us that we first have to be fully submitted to the Lord before we can begin to resist the devil to make him flee from us.

2. The second step is to go before the Lord and confess out the sins of the sinning parent or parents.

3. The third step is to then be willing to fully forgive your parents for whatever they have done to you - no matter how bad or how vicious the abuse has been over the years.

4. The next step is to verbally break any unhealthy soul ties that may have developed between the child and the bad parent.

5. The fifth step is to then verbally, out loud, break the curse lines that the demons have been operating and feeding on over all of those years operating under the power, anointing and authority to be able to do this.

6. The last and final step, once the curse line has been fully broken and severed, is to then verbally command the demons to now leave you in the name of Jesus Christ.

Curse lines can be broken. Christians do not have to put up with the torments and attacks from demons who have may have been following them into their adult lives and into their own marriages as a result of the legal rights given to them by the sinning parent.

The Bible tells us that having lack of knowledge can cause us too go into captivity. However, the reverse is also true. Having the right kind of knowledge can help set you free and get you delivered from any kind of captivity you may have fallen into.

i work at an animal shelter. today was brutal, about 4 people called us wanting to return cats that they adopted 8 years ago!! can you believe that?!?! one was even from 1996!!! these poor cats have no one else and now me and my employees have to see them slowly die in a cage. i want to put some heavy duty curse on them all. not to kill them but at least get them in a bad car accident or get swine flu or something! haha well i'm new at this but could you or someone reading this let me know what i could do without having to get something personal of theirs? that seems impossible here. what i was thinking was to just drool on my hand and smear my spit on their car. like on the handle and tires. but i dont want to get caught but i wanna make sure that they pay! please let me know of something! do it for the cats!!!

    Hello:

This is Brenda and I have told me of my problems. I had a very bad week last week and I took too many valerian root pills and if I would had any thing stronger I would have taken that.
Is it possible to get a telephone number from so I could get some protection from this doll that they of me or this curse (not sure). Also to get some type of spell etc of clarity for my husband so he would be out from under these peoples spell before something happens to me or him?

I would be glad to pay you something, I just unsure what to do, but I am sure I'll die soon, no way or another, I just need him to know I do love him and I did not do anything someone did this to me.

It's a strange thing, but when I do a banishing just to get somebody out of my head, they tend to leave town for good. ;)

This reminds of me of things whispered in the kitchen amongst my great-grandfathers, aunts and one grandmother. A lady lived in our area that even the most well-off and educated people consulted but I was never allowed to know her name or whereabouts. (My father was a strict religious man, an engineer at IBM.) Then there was granny magic/mountain magic hinted at too. And I've seen some very strange things over the years. Thank you so very much for this useful and enthralling information.
