Wagener, SC - your home town
Wagener, South Carolina, is a small town near the capital city of South Carolina - Columbia, SC. Wagener is in Aiken County. We lived in Wagener for 5 years in the 1970's. We had a delightful time and made wonderful friendships there.
I attached this old photo of my friend Margie and me! We always have fun! Laughter and cherished friends seem to mark my Wagener experience! Isn't that a lovely way to remember a part of your life?

Life in a small town
We lived in Wagener when our children were small. We moved there so that my husband could build Coopers Creek Golf Course.
That very first day, our neighbors came to call. That was 1970. Billy and Margie came to see us. We got acquainted, and of course, we laughed a lot. Small town folk are really good at laughter! Billy even helped me get the television working. There was no cable in those days.
I pulled a little red wagon to deliver our son to kindergarten, and of course, we never locked the doors. Very often after those early morning walks, I would arrive home to find a fresh pie in the refrigerator or fresh veggies on the kitchen counter. and a happy note from someone welcoming us to town.
As the years passed, our friendships grew. My happiest memories include sitting in the front porch swing watching the world go by as the children played, washing dishes while a flock of little boys and daddys played baseball in the back yard, nine little puppies rescued by our six year old from under the barn, people stopping by to visit for a while or just to say hello, making jelly for the first time with the help of my precious neighbor, preparing Thanksgiving dinner for my parents for the first time in my life -- and yes, Margie helped me all day, and we laughed more than we cooked.
My husband and I both sobbed when we moved from Wagener. It was major grief for both of us. We did adjust and learned to love our new home, but we still have warm memories of happy days in Wagener with our friends.
I grew up in the small town of Pendleton, SC. I was already comfortable with the close knit lifestyle and people all around. We were in Wagener five years and had a wonderful time.
Last fall, I went for a visit with our friends, Margie and Billy. As I rode through town that day, I seemed to remember laughter at each little location as I passed by -- Tyler Brothers, Wagener Baptist Church, Granny Ruby Fallaw's house, Margie and Billy's, Linna Sue Cofer's, Listene Courtney (best tomato gravy in the world!), Mama Nina's, Shorty and Charlotte, the town square and memories of Wagons to Wagener days. Maybe it is because we were so young then. I remember the time the Woman's Club went to Aiken or Columbia for a meeting, and a bunch of us were laughing so hard telling jokes, that we were all in tears! I don't remember the jokes -- I do treasure the laughter! For sure, we had a good time and made precious memories. I am thankful for the years we spent in Wagener.
