Home Cooking at the Wagon Wheel

Down in the country in Chester County, South Carolina, the Wagon Wheel is everybody's favorite place to eat. Even though we live about 25 miles from there, we drive down quite often just to enjoy the good food and the happy family atmosphere. The Wagon Wheel has been a central hub for the community for 30 years. George and Joanna treat every guest like family!

We especially enjoy the Sunday buffet! The Sunday buffet usually includes fried chicken, BBQ, roast beef, fried squash, green beans and a beautiful salad bar! On our visit last weekend, I took these photos to share with you. Enjoy!

The Salad Bar

The salad bar at the Wagon Wheel is always a treat -- filled with all available fresh salad produce, and presented beautifully.

You can easily prepare a delicious salad from all of the choices available, and in addition there is my favorite, Wagon Wheel cole slaw! The potato salad tastes like homemade, too!

On this particular Sunday, the first item on the salad bar was bright red watermelon slices! Yummy!

If you go to the Wagon Wheel, you simply must start with the fried squash! I have never tasted better fried squash anywhere! In fact, sometimes we order the fried squash on a big platter for everyone at the table. When we do that, with the salad bar and that wonderful cole slaw, I am often full before our meal arrives at the table.

On Sundays, though, for the buffet, the fried squash joins the array of other vegetables available. The green beans are especially good. In fact, all of the vegetables are delicious!

Meats at the Wagon Wheel

Last Sunday the buffet included pork bbq ribs, fried chicken and sliced beef. Of course, we had to try a little of all of them.

On a regular weeknight, we order catfish, flounder or shrimp. Absolutely the best anywhere in our area! I think they must make their own award-winning tartar sauce.

Wagon Wheel Atmosphere

This little minature Wagon Wheel restaurant is on a shelf with others. I imagine that different guests make these by hand or buy and redecorate them and bring to the Wagon Wheel as gifts. I always enjoy looking at them.

We were seated at a large table and we had extra seats. Soon we were joined by a man and his wife and their child. The lady said "today we are family." And for sure, that's just the way it works at the Wagon Wheel. Everybody is family, especially on Sundays!

And a personal note -- we love and appreciate Rene, who takes such good care of us! Ask to sit in Rene's section for the best service you ever received in any restaurant. My husband is legally blind, and when he orders steak down there, Rene delivers it to the table already cut into bite size pieces. That is southern country service! And we love her for it! Of course, her happy smile is part of that joy, too!
