Walden Two

I'm making this page about Fiction book review because I believe we can speculate like they do in Sim City and the Sims and various other video games what the world would be like if certain changes were introduced into the civilization. Skinner seemed to have the same sense of experimentation way before the personal computer was introduced onto the market. There ought to be a better way, he thought, we can scientifically observe behaviors under certain different controlled conditions. We can positively influence behavior for the betterment of society as a whole. This would be the greater good, doing the most good for the most people.

I have read this book, and am interested in hearing your comments. I highly recommend it. I am going to contrast and compare with some of my other favorite books. Utopian and Negative Utopian

Step aside, NYT book reviewers. Lenny G is here to show you how it's done!

Walden Two made me really stop and think, long and hard about some things. Yeah, I think it has a few flaws, like Skinner's view on child rearing. But his ideas about work are refreshing. He describes residents in his commune only having to do about 4 hours of real work a day. They do some work they really enjoy too. Since there is no middle men or bosses profit from them, that's all it takes. The planet earth should be able to produce enough food for every man, woman, and child. There is so much waste and extravagance though while others can't pay their bills and currently starve to death. If we could eliminate that, we could have a Utopia, although the Capitalist system can no longer work in a paradise on earth. People would no longer dominate over other people. Similarly we can neither have Communism work because the government people in power start to become the elite and have more rights and privilege. This is what happened in Animal Farm by George Orwell.

Debate: Did you love this book or loathe it?

What style do you prefer to read and dwell upon?

I think the Utopian if it is exactly what society needs to be like. We only need Negative Utopian novels to describe what to steer clear of.

What kind of fiction is most helpful to model society?

Negative Utopian like 1984, We, Animal Farm

Utopian like Walden by Henry David Thoreau, or Walden Two by Skinner
