Walking continues to dominate the world of weight loss because of it's many advantages.
Results from the Consumer Reports' research study of successful reducers (see Research below for why the people who keep off weight, keep it off ) has walking topping the list of the most popular exercise. Most walkers do other forms of exercise as well during the week but consider walking to lose and control weight as their main focus.
Number one reason for this result, I imagine, is that walking is easy, doesn't require special tools, clothes or venues, to at least get started. When you begin a weight loss program it really helps to get going so easily. Another plus for walking is that you can do it alone or with others.You don't need an expert for advice unless you have medical issues. Also generally you can start without spending much money.
Walking is the ultimate fun method of losing weight and maintaining weight loss. There is no one way of anything which fits everyone best but there is a fun way for most. I like to walk where I feel comfortable and have a good time. I also like to make changes occasionally which add enough difference to avoid getting into a too easy routine which means less weight loss.

There is not only one way of making walking effective for weight loss and at the same time, fun for you. There are infinite variations of walking to lose weight which can be streamlined to suit you. Other people have their idea of what is fun but ultimately the fun is up to you. Make walking every day a game. Challenge yourself to find new or varied ways to make walking fun. As the fun increases, the walking increases, the weight loss increases...
Some feel that walking is boring. It can be if you let it, so take responsibility and add in the fun yourself. Check out Walking to Lose Weight on Facebook. for lots of up to date information, fun and notification of freebies.
Look for local walking groups- check the local paper, council, chemist or library for information.
Walk differently. Find your favourite path. I am an urban walker and enjoy the challenge of finding different routes to keep me interested, and learn more about my area.
Borrow a dog and take it for a walk. Or take an imaginary dog with you.
Walk at a zoo.
Do a 'progressive' walk by of friends, adding as you go.
Keep walking shoes in your car for spontaneous walks.
Think or dream about buying somewhere gorgeous and close by. Look for an open house sales opportunity in this area. Walk around to get a 'feel' of the neighborhood. Look for potential views.
Find or be a friend with a Wii console and play Sports or try Wii Fit.

Stop Finding Excuses-Make It Part of the Fun!

Safety- if this is a concern for you, look for other committed walkers to join together to 1. find a safe venue: shopping mall, car park, sports field, gym, high school, etc. and, 2. walk together.Weather- there are indoor options such as large community areas, undercover shopping centers and treadmills, also look at walking in weather that you may have assumed was unsuitable for walking outside - if it is only a little cold or raining, walk, but with the appropriate gear.
Health- many conditions are assisted in healing or managed by exercise. These range from arthritis, back problems, diabetes to depression and stress related illness. Medical advice is necessary but even when it has been physician recommended some people still find it difficult to commit to. There are many accessories designed to solve, or at least assist with, the plethora of problems, which may be preventing you from taking that step. The important thing is to continue. Even if slowing down or taking a day or two off, is necessary, it is important to stay mentally focussed on yourself as an active person. Initially that may be circling the living room four times.
Muscle pulls- if exercising sensibly this may be less likely than when doing the housework but use it to identify a weakness and then stretch or build up that muscle area to be less likely to strain. If you get a stitch consistently you may be overdoing it. Read more about stitches when walking or running.
Shoes- this depends on what surfaces you are going to be walking on. If you don't have adequate shoes for rough terrain then this is probably not a good idea for starting out. Over time as you get used to walking and try different surfaces and weathers you will get a better idea of what you prefer on your feet. Long walks, particularly in natural environments, can require a walking shoe. Other than that a flat, comfortable, well fitting, sneaker for shorter distances, should be adequate. If you have a particular problem, then a specialist sports shoe store, would be able to advise you. Sometimes it is something like adding a comfortable inner sole rather than buying an expensive shoe.
Time- simple, make time! Even if it is difficult at first, decide that this is important enough for you to rearrange your daily schedule to find a way to fit it in. It is important not to fall at the first hurdle. So it may require you to prepare your life before actually starting. Identify walking paths, measure distances, time yourself, organize ways to fit it in such as walking in your lunchtime, take the children for a walk, etc.
Walking is an attitude to your body and commitment to an active life. Walking to lose weight means being best at finding fun ways to do it every day!

- I don't have a dog but often when I am out walking, lots of dogs with owners pass me and they always say hello. They are so cute! Thanks this is inspiring me to get going. Sometimes it seems easier not to walk, but yuo're right there really is no excuse.
