Gulnessa and her family have escaped from Afghanistan, fleeing war and terror. But despite their hopes, their journey through misery is not over, they are not granted easy freedom in the land of the "fair go". They find themselves in Western Australia as detainees, imprisoned in a detention centre for asylum seekers, and forced to "prove" that they are refugees. Based on research into actual cases and real-life stories, this novel explores the despair, desolation and confusion that face refugees through the story of a very real family. This is a book to make us reflect, and to put our troubles into perspective. Evans is donating half of all royalties to CARAD (Coalition Assisting Refugees, Asylum Seekers and Detainees)

The synopsis of this book reminds me of "The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini, "A Fine Balance" by Rohinton Mistry and "The Hero's Walk" by Anita Rau Badami. These 3 literary books are so well written they literally put you in someone else's shoes through the use of the details of living that may seem different and the people/relationship dynamics which are the same the world over.
