Do you live in a new house where all the walls are painted white?

Maybe by now these walls are getting dirty or you're just tired of the sterile feel throughout your home and would like to add some color?

Or maybe you have empty walls and not too much furniture because you prefer space to stuffiness but would appreciate some color on certain walls.

Whatever the case might be, I hope the samples below will give you some ideas to make some simple changes to your home, the kind that make you feel better - in your personal favorite shades.

How to paint walls

Painting wall interior

Before starting any kind of painting we have to

  • make sure the surface is clean of

    • dirt

    • grime

    • dust

    • mildew

  • and dry (after washing)

  • all the indents need to be filled and smoothed (sanded) to become flush with the rest of the surface

  • tough stains that might bleed through the newly applied coat of paint should be blocked prior to painting with appropriate primer

Always start your wall-painting by edging:

Paint a 2-inch strip with a brush, starting at the ceiling. Repeat the same in the corners, the bottom of the wall, around any kind of edging, doors and windows, around cabinets, outlets, switchboards, vents etc.

For as little afterword cleaning as possible, everything that we're not painting should protected with masking tape or covered.

BTW, old shower curtains work great to cover the floor and furniture. Besides, after the use they can be washed and used/recycled again.

Choosing paint & Painting techinques

What kind of paint to use?

This article should cast some light and help you make a decision what kind of paint you're willing to apply to your walls and what kind of vapors are acceptable (considering your well being) for you to breathe-in.
Green Walls

There are many painting techniques available and well described for skilled DIY (do it yourself) and professional interior decorators like:

  • dragging means drawing a dragging brush (or long haired paint brush) from top to bottom of smooth surface with long vertical strokes, maintaining even pressure and keeping brush strokes as parallel as possible

  • distressing is creating an aged look, using several layers of paint, sand paper and clear lacquer

  • marbling is imitating real marble's colors and veining

  • sponging is applying a wash or glaze on top of solid base paint color with a dampened natural sea sponge to procreate a mottled look

  • ragging and rag-rolling means blotting with crumpled natural fiber cloth (like linen, burlap, lace and such), dipped in glaze or wash on top of solid color base to achieve the look of crushed velvet, parchment, chamois leather, watered silk or brocade

  • stippling is a technique of breaking-up the wall color into a mass of tiny dots to add richness to the finish

  • paneling is decorating the walls with panels

  • broken color is applying broken layers of any chosen variety of colors over a different base coat which creates mottled or textured effect

Paint brushes for house painting

Paintbrushes are important. They are your basic tool so choose the kind you like.

Here's a little secret of mine. With fine brushes, I do my painting without masking or covering anything. The only trick is to dip in paint only one third (the very bottom part) of the bristles.

This way, dripping is highly unlikely to happen. If it does, however, keep a cotton rag handy (an old t-shirt works great) and clean that accidentally misplaced drop of paint right away. No one will ever notice... ;)

Choosing Color

What kind of look are you after?

Below are some possible final results and how to achieve them:

  1. The choice of complementary colors - the ones that are opposite from one another on the color wheel - are the best to create a PLAYFUL, FUN look. Examples: yellow and violet, blue and orange, green and red.

  2. Different tones of the same color (same shade, different intensity) create SOPHISTICATED impression.

  3. For SUBTLE appeal choose colors that are next to each other on the color chard.

  4. DRAMATIC LOOK IS EASILY ACHIEVED WITH two or three harmonious colors and an accent hue of either black or white.

  5. Colors of the same value/intensity generate HARMONY or BALANCE. Example: colors that are in the same position on several color cards - like third down from the top.

  6. When using colors of varying intensities, keep in mind that brighter hue conceives a BOLD look, while using more of the lighter one will be more SOOTHING.

  • The best place to pick your favorite color, accompanied by five matching shades is ColorBlender. It offers complete palettes that can be used in any kind of decorating, color-matching, web design and more.

The smallest and simplest design

Painting wall designs

Simple geometric wall design painting like the one on the Polaroid photo below is pretty easy to do even for someone with little or no painting experiences.

If you're really new to interior painting craft, go ahead and try a design you like on the wall inside the walk-in closet, garage or basement - before painting it on a visible spot in your living area. This way you avoid redoing (painting over) to cover a mess on big, visible areas and at the same time gaining some know-how.

Before: wall section ready for painting, design marked with masking tape

After

Bigger design

This design is a little bit bigger than the first one but still simple and a great addition to that particular space.

Just choose your favorite matching colors, grab some paintbrushes and masking or painters tape - and have fun!

Before: small area of the wall under the window, between the door and shower

After: looking much better :)

An entire wall

This used to be a spacey and bright but very boring bathroom inside a master suite. Everything white, except for the cabinets and the floor, neither of which added any life to the scene.

Painting this entire wall over the bathtub made an incredible difference. It added depth and color - and some life.

More ideas

Designs like the ones described and pictured above or similar could also be used:

  • around the centerpiece, hanging on the wall, like:

    • wreath or swag

    • clock

    • framed art piece

    • photo

    • poster

    • or any other kind of wall decor

  • above, behind or around the furniture

  • around the door or window

  • around shape/figure in the middle

At the same time, wall paintings can easily replace wall art and decor - if that's what you like.

Practical tips...

...that may take you from ordinary to extrodinary

  1. If you ever and for any reason have to stretch the color, especially while painting smaller areas, use the paintbrush instead of roller. With brushes, your paint will cover a lot bigger area, guaranteed.

  2. When painting geometrical designs, using masking tape to designate the painting areas of your chosen shades, some color-bleeding might happen. Yet, there's no need to worry about it in this scenario. While observing the whole picture, bleeding is hardly noticeable. At the same time, this small imperfection actually softens the edges of the stiff forms.

  3. For painting details use a paintbrush - as thin as you can lay your hands on. It will make your painting easier and much more precise. Not to mention nicer looking...

  4. Two coats of paint will give you better coverage, brighter color and even some texture - 3D look

  5. If you're mixing your shade yourself keep in mind that most colors dry darker than they look before you apply them on the wall.

  6. To use your favorite picture or photo as a wall painting, use Photoshop program to change it into lines-only. Using projector, project it on the wall, trace - and you're ready to paint.

  7. To achieve ever-changing effects use glossy/semi-gloss paint for background and non-glossy for your pattern (or the other way around). Depending on the light, that might add to your wall some additional interesting effects.

Important - keep this in mind:

Your painting doesn't have to be perfect. The most important thing is that you ENJOY IT!

Another simple idea...

especially useful for smaller areas

Before you paint anything, choose your colors in accordance to what kind of mood/appearance you're trying to achieve.

The rest is easy. Use masking tape to design and designate, grab a brush and go to work. And most importantly: have fun adding color to your living space!

Before - another easy one

After - looking rather formal but that can be easily improved by adding a plant or a small piece of furniture like stool or ped

Staircase special

As seen on the two following photos below, this is a more complicated design which needed preparations and designing in Corel software before printing and cutting it out.

Anyhow, what was before lots of plain, monotonous white, looking dirty all the time from sliding hands, now looks quite stylish, wouldn't you agree?

Most importantly: color will keep the top of the railing looking clean a lot longer (than white ever could).

Note that the more detail you paint, the thinner your brush should be.

Around an outlet

Sometimes there are permanent things on the wall and that might seem like an obstacle in decorative painting. However, it doesn't have to be.

Simply paint your design around and include vents, switchboards, outlets and such in your artwork.

Outlet included

Asymmetrical design

Get creative and embellish a wall with asymmetrical design. Use a focal point/central shape - or not. It's up to you.

And, by the way, butterflies are not mandatory, choose hearts, flowers, pets, cars, plains, boats, sports requisites or anything else you might appreciate around for some time.

It's all up to your imagination and creativity.

Something for your soul

Choosing design

Decorative wall painting techniques

Decorative designs:

  • faux finish is textured finish, imitating granite, Venetian plaster, faux stone and more

  • color blocking is painting (usually three or more) colors in various-sized squares and/or rectangles (blocks) on the wall

  • harlequin design is achieved by painting an elongated diamond pattern on lighter, low sheen background

  • faux fireplace means creating "fireplace" - using paint

  • clouds means painting clouds with rolled up cotton rag and latex glaze on (sky) blue background

  • faux stone finish is another artistic invention of creating stone-like areas, using paint

  • dapple color effects are patches of color or shade, applied against a differently colored background paint

They all provide character, uniqueness and charm to your living space and are especially valuable when you enjoy creating them yourself.

Painting can be a fun, easy and inexpensive way to renew and refresh the look of your home, sweet home.
