Willam Morris & Company History
William Morris was a renowned artist of the 1800's. He is considered the father of the Arts and Crafts Movement which reviled modern technology in favor of hands on creation. He believed part of true art comes from actual human handcrafting and that mechanized mass production took the value out of it.
William Morris participated in many facets of the arts, being himself a writer, architect, painter, and designer. He was also a socialist, which is surprising when you think of the art such as stained glass, rugs, and other designs that he created for wealthy clients. He even wrote books, verse, and lectured on socialism.

Tapestry Weaving
Morris wove his first tapestry in 1877. The loom interested him and so he bought one and set it up in his bedroom - an artist trying a new medium. Using that loom he produced his first tapestry, Acanthus and Vine, decided he liked the idea and went into production. He got an apprentice who, once he was trained, went on to train new weavers. His hands on philosophy is apparent in his work. William Morris tapestries and decor are incredibly detailed and creative works easily identifiable by their unique design and innate energy. Here are some further William Morris references: The William Morris Society and William Morris & Co.

- William Morris is also known for his fine publishing company - The Kelmscott Press. His most famous work was the Kelmscott Chaucer. It was completed in 1896 and was Morris' final work. It contained 87 major drawings by Edward Burne-Jones and many page and initial decorations by Morris himself. Burne-Jones called it a "pocket cathedral." It is considered one of the finest books ever created and was the start of the fine press movement. A brief summary of the Kelmscott Chaucer and some of its illustrations can be seen at www.mccunecollection.org. It is a book well worth looking at.
