Room Painting Ideas To Spruce Up Your Home
Color Washing

Color washing uses two different shades blended together to add dimension and interest to a space. This technique requires applying a glaze solution to the wall over a completely dry base coat. Because glazing is used to create the desired effect, color washing can be considered one of the room paint ideas that is a bit more challenging to complete. However, with the right product, you can have a lovely effect on your walls that will make the color appear to be floating on the surface.

These instructions will make the entire process go much more smoothly and successfully. Begin with a base color of latex paint in eggshell or another neutral shade.
Use Sponge

Once your base has dried, preferably overnight, mix your glaze with a colorful and water according to the package directions. Working from top to bottom to avoid drips, apply water first to saturate the area you will be working on. Next use a sponge to apply the glaze and work it into the area by rubbing in a crisscross pattern. Allow some areas to have a denser coating of the glaze to add dimension to the wall. To work glaze into corners, use a dry brush instead of a sponge for better control. Once the glaze is completely dry, apply a coat of varnish to protect the entire surface.
Sponge Painting

Sponging is one of the ideas for painting rooms that has been around for some time; first, because it adds an attractive element to walls and second because it is one of the easiest painting techniques to complete. The ease of maintenance also makes it a good choice for families with young children. You can choose to sponge three different shades of the same color, or go with different hues completely.

To get a completely different effect, go with lighter colors on top of a deeper base shade. The first step in sponging is to apply a base coat of the desired shade and allow it to dry overnight.
Choose Two Colors

Choose a least two colors for the sponging effect and pour a little of the first shade into a paint tray. Dip a sea sponge into the color and dab off the excess on a paper towel. Apply to the wall using a light touch, and rotate your wrist with each application to get different angles and patterns each time. Once the first color is complete, you can follow the same process with the second color. After you have finished the wall, you can go back over spots with either shade to lighten or intensify particular areas.
Stripes And Colors Block

One of the more creative ides for room painting is to create your own piece of artwork on a wall by adding stripes or blocks of color. This technique usually works best on a single wall that will be used as the focal point of the room. Striping can incorporate shades from the same color card or different colors completely. You can even choose a single color in different sheens, alternating stripes of a flat paint with a high gloss to give a subtle effect to the wall pattern.
Color Blocking

Color blocking uses three or more colors to paint blocks on the wall in various shapes and sizes. You can use three shades from the same color card or choose different colors of similar intensity by picking shades in the same position on different cards. Before putting your design on the wall, draw your pattern on a piece of paper to be sure you get the right look. Using a strong contrast like black or white as the border color will give a clean, modern look to the design.
Venetian Plaster

One of the hottest wall painting ideas utilises a simple technique using a Venetian plaster compound. First, apply a base coat of a satin latex paint and let it dry completely. Using a flat putty knife, apply small amounts of the Venetian plaster to the wall, working in different directions to create a random texture. Once the first coat is dry, apply a second coat to fill in the gaps and cracks that might have been left from the first application. The final coat will be plaster mixed with a bit of your base paint to add highlights to the surface.
Adding Texture To Paint

For those who are apprehensive about using one of these painting rooms ideas, there is an even easier way to bring texture to a wall. Create luxuriously soft suede walls or add a touch of breezy linen, sophisticated leather or ultra casual denim to your space. Don't be afraid to go with rich jewel tones in a suede or leather texture, because these hues will add elegance and sophistication to a living or dining room. Try painting the top half of the walls with the textured paint and install a wainscoting on the bottom, topped by a decorative chair rail.
