Waltz Across Texas With Me!
I am a country oldies fan. I love country music from the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. Ernest Tubb, better known as "ET", recorded "Waltz Across Texas" in 1965. This song is still a popular tune in dance halls all over Texas.
My heart just melts when I listen to the words of this country music classic. There is something about this song that makes you want to grab your favorite dance partner and head for Texas.
Please join me as we turn back the years and waltz across Texas.

Waltz Across Texas Lyrics
Fairyland Tales Really Do Come True!
When we dance together my world's in disguise,It's a fairyland tale thats come true.
And when you look at me with those stars in your eyes,
I could waltz across Texas with you.
Waltz across Texas with you in my arms,
Waltz across Texas with you.
Like a storybook ending I'm lost in your charms,
And I could waltz across Texas with you.
My heartaches and troubles are just up and gone,
The moment that you come in view.
And with your hand in mine dear I could dance on and on,
And I could waltz across Texas with you.
Waltz across Texas with you in my arms,
Waltz across Texas with you.
Like a storybook ending I'm lost in your charms,
And I could waltz across Texas with you.

All About Ernest Tubb
The Texas Troubadour
Ernest Tubb was born on February 9, 1914, on a cotton farm near Crisp, Texas. His father was a sharecropper so he spent much of his youth working on farms throughout Texas. Young Ernest loved the music of Jimmie Rodgers and spent his spare time learning to sing, yodel and play the guitar. At the age of nineteen, he took a job as a singer on a San Antonio radio station. He made very little money so he also dug ditches and worked as a clerk in a drug store.
In 1936, Ernest Tubb developed a friendship with Jimmie Rodger's widow. She helped him get a recording contract with RCA. His first two records were unsuccessful. In 1940, he switched to Decca records and it was his sixth Decca release with the single "Walking the Floor Over You" that brought Tubb to stardom.
Tubb joined the Grand Ole Opry in February, 1943 and put together his band, the Texas Troubadours. He remained a regular on the radio show for four decades, and hosted the Midnight Jamboree after it. In 1947, Tubb headlined the first Grand Ole Opry show presented in Carnegie Hall in New York City. In 1965, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and in 1970, Tubb was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Who is George Strait?
A few days before the performance, it was announced that Ernest Tubb was ill and his show had been cancelled. I didn't know it at the time, but Mr. Tubb was suffereing from emphysema and was very ill.
Gilley's Club brought in an unknown cowboy singer from west Texas named George Strait to do the show. I thought, "Who is George Strait?...I have never heard of him". So, we attended another show featuring Jerry Lee Lewis and I missed seeing both Ernest Tubb and George Strait.
Final Tribute To A Friend
Ernest Tubb sang "Beyond the Sunset" at the funeral of fellow country music singer Hank Williams on January 4, 1953.

Ernest Tubb's Most Requested Song
Many second or third generation Ernest Tubb fans are surprised to learn that "Waltz Across Texas" was neither a 1940s classic nor a big hit at the time of it's release."Waltz Across Texas" was written by Talmadge Tubb, the nephew of Ernest Tubb. Ernest said the following about this song, "Talmadge didn't have it quite finished, and it laid around my den for about eight or ten years, and I dug it out and started fooling with it and liked it, so I rewrote the chorus and added a verse, and I decided to do it for my own pleasure, because it's about my home state of Texas".
"Waltz Across Texas" spent only seven weeks on the Billboard chart in the fall of 1965, never climbing higher than the 34th position.
This song was special to Ernest Tubb because it was written by his nephew and it was about his home state. To Ernest Tubb fans everywhere, but especially to the many in Texas, the song became very special indeed. Something akin to a Texas anthem had been born.
