Do I Have to Become Goofy to Learn Hypnosis?

Learning Hypnosis gives you the power to change almost any aspect of your life. This lens will dispel some of the common misconceptions and myths surrounding the "magic" of hypnosis. The incredible results of hypnosis can certainly seem magical at times, and the unusual, near instantaneous effects appear almost impossible. The truth is that hypnosis is an incredibly powerful tool, but very scientific in its origins and application.

Once you dispense with the goofy ideas and other nonsense surrounding hypnosis, you can begin to explore the reality of incredible life changes. You'll become an advocate and a daily practitioner of 'magic' (at least that's what all your friends will think).

Why is Learning Hypnosis Sometimes Considered Mystical or Occult?

Hypnosis has been known and practiced for hundreds of years, but learning hypnosis in a scientific way only developed at the end of the 19th century. Prior to the scientific approach, most hypnosis was classified as mystical, magical, or occult-based.

Just like early man worshiped the sun and moon (because they didn't understand them), so they mystified hypnosis because they didn't understand the functioning of the human mind. This tendency to mystify and fear things that weren't understood was universal and very common until the Age of Reason dawned in the late 1800's.

The residual effects of this tendency to fear the unknown are still seen today when hypnosis is referred to as 'magical' or as 'an occult tool'. Nothing could be further from the truth, but a person must understand the hypnosis process and at least some of the brain's function to see this.

Will Learning Hypnosis Harm Me in Any Way?

This question is often asked but is similar to asking "will exercise harm me"? We know that exercise is only hurtful if a person has some special injury or sickness. In general, exercise is a natural extension, or controlled use of the muscles and other physical systems. A person who exercises simply fine tunes and practices the natural movements and abilities of the body.

Similarly, people experience different forms of hypnosis almost everyday, but never recognize it is even happening! That's because hypnosis is simply a natural aspect of human brain/mind function. The person who practices proper hypnosis techniques will strengthen and make better use of their natural human functions.

As with physical exercise, the only caveat is for people with special sickness or injury. Therefore if you suffer from some form of mental illness or injury, you should consult with an experienced hypnotherapist before you attempt any self hypnosis sessions.

Will Learning Hypnosis Make Me Look or Act Funny?

This may sound silly, but many people wonder if learning hypnosis will somehow make them act 'mystical' or more 'spiritual' or the like. The answer is this: "Only if you're already acting mystical or goofy in some way"!

Hypnosis is now practiced successfully by mainstream medical providers as an adjunct to cancer treatment, dental care and many other treatments. The day of wearing robes and growing long beards has passed on and you only have to revive them if you decide that you want a change in wardrobe.
