The thickness of a sheet of watercolor paper is measured by weight. The more it weighs, the thicker the sheet.

It is measured either in pounds per ream (lb) or grams per square meter (gsm). The standard weights of paper are 90 lb (190 gsm), 140 lb (300 gsm), 260 lb (356 gsm), and 300 lb (638 gsm).

Thinner paper needs to be stretched to prevent it from buckling or warping when you paint on it. How thick the paper needs to be before you can happily paint away on it without it getting those waves and bumps, depends on how wet you get the paper as you paint.

Experiment with different weights to see, though it's likely you'll find that paper less than 260 lb (356 gsm) wants to be stretched.

Not having to stretch it is not the only reason for using heavier paper. It'll also stand up to more abuse, and take a greater number of glazes.

Watercolor papers come in different surfaces and weights.

-Machine-made watercolor papers come in three surfaces: rough, hot-pressed or HP, and cold-pressed (or NOT).
Rough watercolor paper has a prominent tooth, or textured surface. This creates a grainy effect as pools of water collect in the indentations in the paper.

-Hot-pressed watercolor paper has a fine-grained, smooth surface, with almost no tooth. Paint dries very quickly on it.

-This makes it ideal for large, even washes of color.
Cold-pressed watercolor paper has a slightly textured surface, somewhere in between rough and hot-pressed paper. It's the paper used most often by watercolor artists.

-Watercolor paper differs from manufacturer to manufacturer, so experiment not only with the different kinds of paper but also with various brands of paper.

Tips:

1. Watercolor paper is usually white, but it need not be. A variety of cool and warm tints is available.

2. Use acid-free paper for paintings you wish to keep as this will yellow less with age.

3. Cold-pressed watercolor paper is called NOT paper because it's not hot-pressed.

4. You can buy prestretched watercolor paper in drawing blocks. When you've finished a painting, you use a palette knife to remove the top sheet from the block

When you are first starting out painting, the common question asked is, "What type of brushes should I use?"

The answers vary from artist to artist, but there are a few basic ones you might find useful.

I personally use,

1. A rigger, and a round brush for fine detail.

2. A fan brush works great for painting evergreens, light on the waves, I've use it for putting the wrinkles on an elephant.

3. A mop for putting washes on.

4. With oils for large areas where you need a thicker solid color, I use a larger brush, similiar to what you would paint a wall with (The smaller size)

5. For straight edges, an angle brush works well.

6. For Oil painting I recommend using brushes with natural fibers.

Tip: If you paint in many different types of medium, it is good to keep your brushes seperate. Don't use the same brush for oils as you do water colors.

So you can see, each artist has a different view on the type of brushes they use for Oils. Experimenting is the best thing to do. Try out some cheaper brushes first, practice your painting and see which ones you like. When you find the type you like, then purchase the more expensive ones that should last a long, long time if you take care of them.

Oil Paints

The higher end Oil Paints of course create the best color and mixes, closer to realism if that is what you are looking for.

Oil paints (if on a budget, the only colors you need are Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow, Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White)

If you are a just starting out, there are cheap sets of oil paints at almost any department or craft store.

When you become more accomplished in painting, invest in at least the Primary colors above. You can get a color wheel that will help you in mixing colors.

Tip: Take a sheet of white paper, draw squares on it, and put the colors you have along the top and left side, then when they meet in a square, mix a tiny bit of the color there, so that you can see the shade it makes. Keep this paper as a reference, you can refer back to it when looking for a certain shade or hue of color.

Additional things you may need when painting with oils.

1. Oil paints

2. Color wheel (to assist with the correct combinations for specific colors, and to help you understand how complementary colors can be used)

3 Walnut or Linseed Oil (to combine with pigments to create your own paint, if desired)

4. Brushes

5. Thinner or Turpentine or Turpenoid (to rinse brushes while painting and create thinner wash techniques). This is seriously flammable, so be careful. I suggest buying the Low Odor Thinner

6. Palette knife (smaller knives make less of a mess, and you'll find yourself using less paint) On a budget, an Old butter knife will work for this

7. Two containers with lids that hold your thinner and walnut or linseed oil while painting I suggest glass containers

8. Paint palette These are found almost anywhere and are inexpensive, however when just beginning you can even use an old dinner plate

9. Storage box like a tackle or tool box, leave room to grow because as you paint more and more, you will find your supplies growing too.

10. Canvas to paint on (stretch it yourself or buy pre-stretched and primed)

11. Easel (optional)

Old Holland Classic Oil Colors
Old Holland has been making artist colors since 1664, making it one of the oldest continuously operating companies in the art supplies industry. Pigments are ground in stone rather than metal rollers, and colors are packaged in lead tubes rather than the more modern aluminum alloy tubes, which eventually oxidize and decay. Old Holland Oils are produced according to traditional recipes, those used for paintings made in the 17th century. These paintings retain the clarity of their colors to this day. That's durability. Like hundreds of years ago, only the best pigments and binders are used to produce very concentrated and light-fast paint, resulting in higher color strength, hiding power, and intensity. That goes for all 168 colors listed here. Only cold-pressed linseed oil from the first pressing is used for the binder. This optimizes oxidation (drying) of the paint and also promotes permanence. With watercolor paints, there's not only
different brands, but it also comes in
in tube or pan form.

If you are using watercolors as your
main medium you should use the
best quality paints.

If you are just using them for sketching
only a small sketching set will do.

Student paints are cheaper
for a reason: they've usually more filler
in them, so the colors aren't as good
quality. They do work well for those
that are just getting started and unsure
if they want to put a lot of money into
their newfound hobby.

Best Brands of Watercolor Paint

Watercolor paints are manufactured in
Student Quality and Artists Quality.
They are available in either pans
(cakes of color) or in tubes, both in
various sizes.

They are made for watercolor painting
and are basically transparent. There
are other water based paints which are
designed to be opaque. (Gouache, has
wat they call designers' colors and
Chinese watercolors.

Tubes are more convenient when painting
large areas, they cause less wear on
brushes and save time. With tubes you
have fresh, clean color to be
used at the start of each painting.

Pans are more compact and easily
transportable.

My preference: TUBES

Student quality paints are OK for
beginners and intermediate, even
some professional artists use them.
They are relatively inexpensive
and can produce good glowing
watercolour paintings. The cost
is standard throughout the range.
Student quality paints usually use
substitute pigments for the more
expensive pigments used in Artist
Quality paints

Student quality
paints may not be as transparent
and/or light fast as artist quality.
They may fade with time.

Artist quality paints are normally
grouped into categories which
designates a cost band as the
pigments used to produce different
colors vary in price. For example:
Series 1 to series 5 for Winsor
and Newton. There are many other
brands available such as
St. Petersburg, Michael Wilcox
and others.

Paints are packaged in boxed sets
of pans or tubes or sold as separate colors.

You should begin with at the very least
Student Quality, it is not recommended
to use watercolor boxes
intended for children as it will be difficult,
if not impossible, to produce good
paintings.
