A Short Introduction to the Warcraft Economy

The basics of a free market system.

Before we get into all the nitty gritty details of making you a ton of gold in Azeroth, it would probably be a good idea if we discussed what kind of economy exists here. You see, the principles of a Free Market Economy are in existence, though there are some limits in place to make sure that people don't go stabbing each other in the back and taking their money.

The first limitation of the economy is that while you might beg, barter or trade your goods, most often, you will use the fairly easy to access Auction House to get the job done for you. It's easy, it's convenient, gives you up to 24-48 hours of time, and charges a fairly low fee for auctions (boy could I use a piece of that action). On the flip-side, Bind-on-Pickup (BOP), Bind-on-Account (BOA), and Soulbound items cannot be sold on the Auction House or traded openly.

Of course, there are plenty of other things you can do as well. Everything from being a mercenary and running people through instances, street vending in trade chat for things people need or just grinding away are all decent ways to make some gold.

The biggest advantage you will have besides the knowledge of the game is an imagination. Your imagination and sheer brainpower are your most powerful assets in the hunt for shiny things. Keep that in mind, you will need it.

Random Tip

Gettin' out the goods...

Mount recipes and items can be worth quite a bit of money. Components to make a Chopper or Mechanohog for instance are easily mined, skinned, or obtained and with a decent engineer at your disposal, you can make a few hundred to a few thousand gold a pop. Quite a bit more if you happen to have an alchemist with the recipe for Vial of the Sands (obtained through Archaeology).

• Void Storage - In addition to the bank, players will now have access to a new "deep storage" system, allowing characters to free bag space by setting aside coveted gear. You'll find Transmogrification, Void Storage, and Reforging vendors in Cathedral Square, Stormwind and The Drag, Orgrimmar.

• Reforging - The former Reforging vendors have been... retired. The ethereals have chosen to take over the business and joined their Transmogrification and Void Storage service providers. You'll find them in Cathedral Square, Stormwind and The Drag, Orgrimmar.

• Darkmoon Faire - Make your way to Darkmoon Island during the first week of every month to take in the new Darkmoon Faire, complete with new quests, shows, games, recipes, toys, balloons, souvenirs, snacks, beverages, achievements, and titles.

Numerous class changes and re-balancing. See individual class lenses for details.

Guild Standards are again useable in Firelands. Duration has been increased to 15 minutes, the effect has a 100 yard radius, and now affects dead players.

Dragonwrath, Tarecgosa's Rest: The chance for this item's effect to be triggered has been reduced.

The orc racial Blood Fury now increases spell power rather than only spell damage.

Achievements
The achievement Master of Alterac Valley no longer requires the Alterac Valley Blitz achievement.

The achievement Tol Barad Veteran now requires 25 victories in Tol Barad, down from 100.

Dungeons & Raids
• New Dungeon: End Time - This new 5-player Heroic dungeon begins the quest to save all with a look at the desolate future of Azeroth, should its defenders fail to stop Deathwing.

• New Dungeon: Well of Eternity - In this new 5-player Heroic dungeon, adventurers travel back 10,000 years in a brazen attempt to retrieve the Dragon Soul.

• New Dungeon: Hour of Twilight - This new 5-player Heroic dungeon sets the final stage by bringing players face-to-face with the Twilight's Hammer in present-day Dragonblight, where Thrall and the Dragon Soul must be safely escorted to Wyrmrest Temple so that the assault on Deathwing can commence.

• New Raid: Dragon Soul - Players have the opportunity to take the fight to Wyrmrest Temple and beyond, assisting Thrall and the Dragon Aspects as they seek to bring an end to the Black Dragonflight once and for all. 10- and 25-person raids will get to take on Deathwing himself, with three levels of difficulty to consider and epic gear to claim.

• New Baradin Hold boss: Alizabal - Alizabal presents an all-new boss challenge to player in 10- and 25-player arrangements who control Tol Barad. This boss will be available with the start of Season 11, one week after the release of patch 4.3.

• Ruins of Ahn'qiraj - Bosses now drop a rare-quality Scarab Coffer Key which can be used to open the Scarab Coffers found within. These keys are zone-bound to Ruins of Ahn'qiraj and have a 17-hour expiration. This change also applies to Greater Scarab Coffer Keys used to open Large Scarab Coffers.

• Zul'Gurub - Players now only have to kill two of the four initial dungeon bosses (High Priest Venoxis, Broodlord Mandokir, High Priestess Kilnara, and Zanzil) to face Jin'do the Godbreaker.

• Zul'Aman - Players now only have to kill two of the four Troll avatars before they may face Hex Lord Malacrass.

Players who use Dungeon Finder for a random Heroic dungeon will no longer be locked to that instance. Previously, players who entered an instance via the Random Dungeon option were then prohibited from queuing for that dungeon or entering the instance manually via the portal. Players should now always be able to complete a specific Heroic dungeon once per day regardless of any random dungeons completed.

General Tips & Information

Things I've Learned In Azeroth

You know, after we put the fires out...

Deathwing really did a number on this place. Everywhere you look is either broken, on fire, plagued by cultists, or just plain rebuilding. But big changes mean big opportunities to those with the right kinds of skills...

1. Looking for Obsidium? The Regrowth area (phased after the quests are complete) in Hyjal is the place you want to be. It's great for both mining and herbalism. Beware various fiery fiends that have recently taken up residence.

2. Uldum is your new best friend. Besides being an awesome zone in it's own right, it's the best place to run for elementium, pyrite, and whiptail. Crockalisks make great targets for skinners as well.

3. Some herbs can only be gathered in certain zones, picking up an addon like gatherer will help you out immensely.

4. Truegold is a powerhouse moneymaker because you need it for all types of upper level armor and weapons crafting. Trick is the materials. Set yourself up with an alchemist who can transmute living elements into volatile air (in Uldum) and then turn around and transmute those materials into Truegold and you'll have yourself a nice little gold factory. Requires: 1 miner, 1 herbalist, 1 alchemist. All 525 level.

5. Guild benefits are not to be dismissed lightly, even if you like the loneliness of being unguilded, you can't deny the advantages of joining a high level guild.

6. Archeology is the WoW equivalent of long-haul trucking. That being said, there are some rare items you can get that are quite lovely. Mounts, pets, odd items, and even some super high level weapons.

7. No matter how much you try to avoid Vash'jir, you're going to end up there anyways. Try to enjoy the quests while you run it. This counts especially for herbalists as you're going to need Ashzaras Veil to level to 525. There is a node in Hyjal, but nowhere near as much as you're going to need.

8. Like skinning? Like Tol Barad? Check out the crockalisks in the swamp next to the center in the PvP area. Everybody has to kill them for the daily and many players camp the area specifically for the leftovers.

9. Worried about getting your gear level up? Don't be. you can go a very long way by getting exalted rep with each faction. Every faction in the expansion offers some 359 epics at exalted, though they do differ in which classes they're for. Also of note is Tol Barad, where tokens can buy you some very spiffy gear and trinkets. With the recent 4.2 patch, 359 gear can also be purchased with Justice Points (JP).

10. High level guild feasts are BOP. But that doesn't stop many guilds from stocking up on the mats for them. Get your fishing up, there's no excuse now that you can get skill ups from the daily quest.

To be continued...

Things I've Learned In Northrend

It's not all snow and ice... Well, half of it is.

Northrend used to be seen as a barren frozen wasteland inhabited by monsters, spiders, and hapless treasure hunters. Don't worry, it still is for the most part, but the Northrend of today is diverse in temperature, habitation, and exploitation...

1. Gold is in decent quantities for the expansion, doing quests won't make you really rich, but it will pay the bills and then some. All the cool stuff from Outland is back in this expansion, which brings us to...

2. Daily quests are back with a vengeance, including cooking and PvP dailies, almost all of which pay out a pretty decent sum of gold, XP, and more.

3. The best fishing pole in the game currently can be had for the player with enough spare time to get exalted with the Kalu'ak.

4. Sholazar Basin is a gold mine for any gathering professional. Beware though, competition is pretty fierce and faction combat can break out at any time, especially around Nesingwary Base Camp.

5. One of the best places to get Chilled Meat (used extensively in cooking dailies) is in Howling Fjord at [79,74] right on the water. Look for the seals and start whacking away and you'll have multiple stacks in minutes.

Things I've Learned In Outland

Changes & more in Burning Crusade.

Outland is as beautiful as it is diverse. Indeed, Outland is the major hub of the game at this point for higher up players and is one of the best places to be earning money right now. No, it's not the only place, but you can make some serious gold here. Just be aware that everyone else with the expansion is probably thinking the same thing you are...

1. Making gold in Outland is easy. Especially after you stop running away from the scary monsters and your pants dry.

2. If you have the tenacity to get your professions skilled up to 375, you will discover some professions have nifty specializations!

3. No matter how many rocks you get, your mining only goes up by one point per every qualifying rock node you mine.

4. The price of an arcanite bar may have dropped, but the transmute has no cooldown now! (Which means you can still make some serious gold with this when the timing is right).

5. Motes are easy to get if you know where to look. Life in Zangarmarsh, Mana in Netherstorm, Fire in Shadowmoon, and Shadow, Earth, & Air in Nagrand. Otherwise just look for corresponding elementals in Outland.

6. Flying mounts are really fun and necessary for making more money because of areas you can get access to as well as safety and efficiency that a flying mount can provide to a gathering operation.

7. Engineers have gotten a few nice upgrades since the expansion came out. Mana and health injectors sell great, mote extractors are really useful, and they even get specialized mounts that can be built.

8. If you are level 80, doing Outland Loremaster achievements are their own reward. You can make hundreds of gold doing quests that are much easier than they previously were.

Favorite Way to Make Gold

Pick from one of our super-duper generic options!

Lots of players make gold in a variety of ways and we're curious to see which methods people prefer. Many players probably use a combination of different methods to obtain financial superiority, but let's just go with your favorite modus operandi and if you want, tell us why or even how well it works.

General Money Making Tips

  • 1Professions are a good start
Primary and Secondary professions are good places to begin making money from. Most professions allow you to make goods for other characters that you can sell to them.
  • 2Learn to use the Auction House (AH)
The AH can be your lifeblood whether you are dealing in potions, epic weapons, or reagents. Learning to use it can be tricky, but is more than worth it when you find a hot commodity.
  • 3Keep your eye on the trade channel
When you can, keep your eyes on channel 2 because occasionally you will find very good deals as many people are competing with the AH in terms of price and this can be even better if a particular market is in a slump.
  • 4Know what you are selling
This seems to be common sense, but if you look up item A and it has 5 more uses than item B, it's probably going to sell better. If item A is a trade good or consumable, it should be easier to manufacture. The better you get at making Item A, the better the feel for the market you will get.
  • 5Know thy market
This goes along with knowing what you're selling. If you sell an item long enough, you get a feel for the average price on the server (a good way to know when someone is trying to cheat you), the major players in niche markets, and exactly how much profit margin you can get for your sale.
  • 6Invest in macro training
If you are planning to bark out that you are doing enchants in a busy city, make sure that you can do so without needing to type a small paragraph each time. 3 lines seems to be the respectable max for a post in the trade channel.
  • 7Fishing may be boring, but worth it
You would be suprised at what fisherman pull up. Yes, I know it's boring sometimes, repetitive all the time, and most of the time you get worthless fish. But if you know where to fish, that changes the game. Fishing high level schools and uncommon fish can net you some nice gold. Pick out fish that get used in feasts, potions, and other raid materials and you'll get your hands on some real money.
  • 8Make alts work for you
An ALT is an alternative character often on the same server. If you have some extra materials that can be processed and resold, send them off to the alt, log in an hour later and run them through the profession of choice (will require leveling in most cases), send them back and resell.
  • 9Have an alt in a capital city
Since you don't always play Alts, a tip I read about somewhere made the suggestion to have an Alt in a capital city so that your main character doesn't always have to travel back to post item in the AH. Definitely a good idea if your character is going to be away in the wilds for a bit. This works as long as you can easily get to a mailbox.
  • 10Gold farmers are people too
This is fast becoming a time honored tradition in WoW that is simultaneously loved and hated for various reasons. If you're good about it, farming from a gathering skill in the right areas is like panning for gold and consistently getting it.
  • 11Be nice to people
Another no brainer, but be sure to be nice and respectful when closing a sale because they are paying you for something that they could get somewhere else. Plus, it might even net you some additional sales down the road and increase your reputation on the server.
  • 12Don't be a ninja
If you're in a group and you need an item, ask first. If you just want that item, again, ask. If you roll need on a item you can't use or just because, that makes you a ninja, and yes, ninjas don't get re-invited into groups.
  • 13Hit the smaller instances
If you are a higher level player (80-85), there are lesser instances that you can solo to get additional money. You can score additional rep as well and most instances from BC and below are easily solo-able.
  • 14Find limited recipes
Most recipes can be bought from a specific vendor, however some can only be bought once or maybe twice from a vendor in a certain time frame. The recipes that have limited availability and have a vendor who may not be easy to get to will usually sell very well. Crafting items from BOP recipes can be worth quite a bit as well.
  • 15Ride like the wind
I know part of the reason for these tips is to be able to purchase a mount, but once you have a mount, that is a tremendous speed boost in your gathering ability that can help you earn money at a faster rate. Plus, it's nice to be able to travel at faster speeds.
  • 16Neutral auction houses
Keep you eye out for factional type stuff that can be sold over the neutral AH for a decent profit. Recipes, pets, items, and more can all be sold for gold if you have the patience.
