What Are Warhammer Minatures?

Warhammer miniatures are metal and plastic models depicting the various creatures and weapons in the Warhammer Fantasy universe.

So what is Warhammer? It's a gaming system set in a Fantasy univers that allows two or more players to build armies and take go to war against one another on a tabletop battleground.

Players take it in turn to move their miniatures, strike against one another's pieces using dice to determine the outcome, and eventually one player is declared the winner.

There are many different races that can be chosen for your army, from the human forces of Bretonnia and the Empire, through the gold-loving dwarves and mystical elves, to the dark and evil forces of Chaos. Every race has its own set of miniatures, each depicting different types of soldier with their own attacks and tactics.

However, the miniatures are more than just pieces to move around the battle field. They come unpainted, and sometimes unassembled, so it's down to you to build and paint them, and at the same time inject some character into them. Choose your army's colour scheme and banners and then collect and paint your miniatures to match and you can be sure that your army will be unique.

Collecting Warhammer miniatures is a great hobby both for people interesting in playing the game and also for artists. Each miniature is packed full of detail and character, and some of the rarer miniatures can be worth a lot of money when painted to a professional standard.

Bretonnia

Bretonnian KnightBrave and chivalrous, the knights of Bretonnia are renowned throughout the Warhammer world for their skill in battle.

Marching into battle, the Bretonnian army is an imposing site with ranks of noble
knights followed by scores of lowly peasant men-at-arms.

There are different ranks of knight in the Bretonnian army. The Knights Errant are the trainees of the Bretonnian army, sons of nobles who are keen to prove their skill in battle. Once they have achieved recognition in battle, the Errant becomes a Knight Of The Realm. The Knights Of The Realm form the bulk of the Bretonnian army, and are duty-bound to protect their people and land until death.

Backed up by men-at-arms and bow men, the Bretonnian Army can also call in heavy artillery in the shape of the mighty Trebuchet. This siege weapon is capable of firing huge rocks into the ranks of opposing forces, weakening and demoralising the enemy before they are pounded by the charge of the knights.

The Bretonnian people also devote their lives to the Lady Of The Lake and her spiritual leaders, who in turn are protected by the legendary Grail Knights.

Dwarfs

Dwarf Ironbreakers
The Dwarf race lives underground in mountain strongholds, where they mine for gold and other valuable resources.
Dwarf Lord
While they may be short, the dwarfs of the Warhammer world are strong and determined and make fearsome adversaries in combat. Carrying huge axes and hammers, the Dwarf may not be the fastest combatant on the battlefield but he'll certainly hit hard when he gets the chance.

Dwarfs are also clever engineers and can call on a number of ingenious weapons to support their troops. From the intimidating organ gun to the volatile flame cannon, the dwarf engineers have an ability to design devious machines that can cause huge damage.

Orcs

They're green, they're mean and they're hungry for fresh meat - watch out, the Orcs are coming!
Orc Warboss
Orcs are the scourge of the Warhammer world. They love nothing more than a fight and they don't care whether its with humans, elves or dwarfs - as long as they're in the thick of battle they're happy.

Orcs can call on a variety of troops, from the basic axe-wielding Orc Boyz to savage boar riders, archers to chariot riders. They can also call on the mystical Shaman to bolster troops and bring curses down upon the enemy.

The Orcs are also backed up by their smaller Goblin brethren, who prefer to hang around on the edge of the battlefield and launch sneaky attacks. Fast and deadly wolf riders launch shock attacks while the deadly Goblin Rock Lobber hurls deadly projectiles.

High Elves

High Elf Phoenix Guard
The High Elves are a race who manage to combine elegance and grace with deadly skill and precision. Ancient and mystical, the elves were driven from their homeland after a devastating natural disaster and now fight for their survival.
High Elf Mage
Elves are a disciplined race in battle, wearing strong scale armour and bearing finely crafted weapons. Equally adept with swords, spears and bows the elven troops are a deadly foe and what they lack in numbers they more than make up for with weapon skill.

The elves have also mastered the use of magic, an powerful force wielded by Mages. They are skilled sorcerers who are highly regarded in elven society, and their knowledge and power is often called into use on the battlefield. Their extensive knowledge of ancient tomes is also invaluable in dealing with the evil magic used by the forces of Chaos.

As well as magic, elves can call on mystical dragons and powerful eagles to bring support from the air. There are even Dragon Mages who ride into battle on the backs of dragons, and although wild in nature these Mages bring great power with them.

Where To Buy Warhammer Miniatures

There are two ways of buying Warhammer miniatures. The first is to buy them new directly from Games Workshop or from online retailers such as Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com.

However, another way of building up your forces more cheaply is to buy second-hand miniatures from Ebay. Because these Warhammer miniatures tend to be part or even completely painted they tend to sell for less than brand new miniatures. However, don't be put off, because paint can be stripped from metal miniatures, allowing you to start from scratch and paint them how you see fit.

Warhammer Miniatures On Ebay

Another advantage of buying from Ebay is that you can often buy entire armies in one go, saving yourself a lot of money in the long run. Just be careful that when buying complex multi-part pieces (such as dragons or cannons) that you're getting all of the pieces.

A final advantage of Ebay is that sometimes, if you're lucky, you might get a really old and rare miniature. While these are not always worth a great amount in cash terms, they can give your army an extra touch of character as a lot of the older '80s miniatures were more individual than the mass-produced miniatures of today.
