In Winter the temperatures are frigid here in New England. I know this isn't the only place where people need to keep warm. Inside or out this lens will show you the best ways to stay warm this Winter.

Staying Warm and Cozy at Night

Choosing the Right Comforter for You

There are so many Down comforters available it's hard to know which to choose. Here are the key details you should be looking at when picking out your comforter.

  • Fill Power

The space one ounce of down occupies in cubic inches. Higher fill power means your down comforter will last longer.

    600+ fp is good
    700+ fp is better
    800+ fp is best

  • Thread Count

Thread count tells you how tightly woven the fabric is. The higher the thread count, the less likely that feathers will work their way out.

    180 - 220 tc is good
    230 - 280 tc is better
    300 - 400 tc is best

  • Weight

The weight you choose depends on the temperature you keep your room at night. The size of your bed also makes a difference. This is a basic guideline to help you decide how much comforter you actually need.

    64 - 75 degrees F
    Twin 24. oz.
    Double 30 oz.
    Queen 34 oz.
    King 40 oz.

    54 - 64 degrees F
    Twin 28. oz.
    Double 34 oz.
    Queen 38 oz.
    King 45 oz.

    44 - 54 degrees F
    Twin 32. oz.
    Double 38 oz.
    Queen 42 oz.
    King 50 oz.

  • Types of "Down"

Not all Down is created equal. Sometimes it isn't Down at all.

Siberian Down is the best quality Down.
    Followed by:
    Hungarian Down
    Goose Down
    Goose feather and Down
    Duck feather and Down
    Duck feather

Staying Warm in your Workspace

Choosing the Right Portable Heater for You

You can't stay huddled in your new comforter all day so here are some options for keeping warm while you're at work or getting work done at home.

If you are going to be in one place for a while, at a desk for example, you really don't need to use energy to heat up the whole room. Three types of heaters for this purpose are ceramic, fan forced, and infrared.

If you share the space with others or are not able to stay in front of the heater you will need a something that heats the whole room. Two options to look at are baseboard, and radiator heaters.

Share your best tip for staying warm in the Fall & Winter

Mary Kay

It freezing cold outside and the electricity is out. You have a woodstove or perhaps just a fireplace. Your family huddles by the fire but sometime you'll need to use the freezing cold bathroom. Yikes!

I take a few bricks, heat them up in the fire and then place them in a coffee can and place these on the bathroom floor. 3 or 4 cans can keep a small bathroom relatively warm for an hour. kind of a Mini stove. : )

We keep our heat at 62. We decided to try to see how much cold we could stand. After three days of adjusting with hot cocoa, lots of layered clothes and multiple blankets to help us through we became accustomed to 62. Now we are so accustomed to it, that 65 seems too warm!

We did the same thing in the summer with fans. We keep it at 80 and it seems cool to us.
Our electric bill was $112.00 in mid August in NC!
Eat your heart out!
