The Civil War Ended in 1865 -- Or Did It? "Beverly Hillbillies" or Neo-Secessionists?
While it is impossible for me to vouch for the complete authenticity of the content of this lens, it is a summation of the contents of a suitcase found at an estate sale of a mansion in Beverly Hills, California.
The contents seem to indicate the existence of a band of Confederate sympathizers until the early 1970's. Believed to be one of the last vestiges of the "Glorious Confederacy," this band was evidently led by Daisy May "Granny" Moses. Despite the fact that the Civil War (which they refer to as "The War of Northern Aggression") ended in 1865, with Robert E. Lee's surrender being the crowning moment for the North, the Clampetts may well have been secretly planning for a new Southern, or at least a political agenda promoting the values of "the Hills."
The Clampett clan (Known by authorities and some locals as the "Beverly Hillbillies") was evidently active through 1971. The current location of any of the members of the clan is unknown, but a pair of painted signs, evidently in Moses's hand, was found indicating "Bound for Bug Tussle" and "Dixie or Bust."
The Owners of the Suitcase

Financed by the chance discovery oil by Moses's son-in-law, Jed "J.D." Clampett, the core of the band consists of Moses, Clampett, Clampett's daughter (Elly May Clampett) and his cousin Pearl's son (Jethro Bodine).

The Matriarch of the Clan
In spite of the fact that the house had evidently been abandoned for several weeks, the Clampett Mansion was found in pristine condition. Moses seems to have been quite fanatic about cleanliness and cooking. She has studied medicine, earning her M.D. (Mountain Doctor), and is a proponent of the latest in medical science (as evidenced by this picture). She claims to have a complete knowledge of herbs, potions and tonics including buckeye, snakewort, dogbane, horsemint, newt eye and cat hair. Her "Rheumatiz Medicine" (see picture) is said to have no equal. And according to at least one of her patients, Granny's remedy for baldness is far better than Rogaine and was developed years before. I Wish I Were in Dixie, Or At Least Decorated That Way!

The Clampett Mansion was found in pristine condition. Evidently Moses was quite a fanatic about cleanliness. This was undoubtedly an attempt to make tracking the rebels more difficult when they finally moved on to their next mission!
The valise which was left behind contained incriminating evidence strongly implicating Granny Moses in rebellious activity...at the very least with Confederate sympathies.
The Glorious Confederate Banner

Displayed prominently in several locations throughout the mansion, these flags were obviously well-loved by all members of the houshold. (See the above picture in which the lovely Ellie May Clampett holds what is evidently one of the flags found in the mansion.) Find out how to obtain one of these souvenirs of a bygone era.

"They do not know what they say. If it came to a conflict of arms, the war will last at least four years. Northern politicians will not appreciate the determination and pluck of the South."
--Robert E. Lee
The dogged determination of the Clampetts to continue the conflict in spite of the surrender of Lee, Davis, and the rest of the Southern leadership shows just how resolute these true believers can be!

President of the Confederacy
"I worked night and day for twelve years to prevent the war, but I could not. The North was mad and blind, would not let us govern ourselves, and so the war came."
--Jefferson Davis
Jefferson Davis: (June 3, 1808 - December 6, 1889) served as Senator from the State of Mississippi in 1847. He was Secretary of War under Franklin Pierce, and became President of the Confederate States of America. He served in that office from 1861 through 1865 ... its entire history. After the war, Davis was charged with treason, though he was never tried. He was stripped of his right to run for political office.

--William Tecumseh Sherman
Sherman's unusual given name has attracted considerable attention. Since 1932, it has often been reported that, as an infant, Sherman was named simply Tecumseh. According to these accounts, Sherman acquired the name "William" at age nine or ten, after being taken into the Ewing household. His foster mother, Maria Ewing, who was of Irish ancestry, was a devout Catholic. In the Ewing home, Sherman was given the name Tecumseh because "my father . . . had caught a fancy for the great chief of the Shawnees."

How Well Do You Know The Clampetts?
The Key To Their Capture May Lie In The Trivia

Money, Money, Money!
Confederate Loot Found
Large sums of Confederate currency were found in the suitcase, stuffed in mattresses, and buried in a "root cellar" behind the mansion. It is believed that the purpose of the currency involved somehow destabilizing the US economy by mearns of releasing the Confederate notes under the guise of it being a new issue by the US Mint and Department of the Treasury in accordance with the Presidential Dollar and First Spouses commemorative coin program.
In order to partially pay for the expense of having to guard this potential crime scene, some of the Confederate Currency found will be auctioned off on eBay.
Many economists believe that purchase of these notes will somehow benefit the Rebel Cause by giving credence to their economic system and theories. Do Not . . . DO NOT . . . D O . . . N O T under any circumstances buy, bid on, or even view these Confederate notes, lest the entire stimulus package formulated by the Obama Administration be undermined, collapse, and throw the entire world economy into a depression that will make the troubles in the South following the Civil War look like a walk in the park.
The hopes of the entire world rest on your shoulders. I know it's an awesome responsibility. JUST DON'T LOOK!

Operating behind the veil of the well-respected financial institution The Commerce Bank of Beverly Hills, millions of dollars were hidden in accounts in the names of the Jed Clampett, Elly May Clampett, Daisy Moses, and Jethro Bodine.
While much of the Clampett's finances were in Confederate notes and bonds, the majority of it was actually in legitimate "Union" financial instruments. Stocks, bonds, and real estate were part of the Clampett empire, along with a movie studio. In addition, a great deal of money in the form of currency which circulated throughout both the North and the South (especially coinage) during the conflict.
The Financial Acumen of the Clampetts
Evidently realizing that "real money" (Confederate Currency) would not work in society, the Clampetts hoarded Federal Funds as well in the form of thousands and thousands of coins hidden in mattresses in extra bedrooms!

I have a cousin who claims to be a hillbilly. She keeps sending me some funny stuff. Because of this I often thought about writing about hillbillies. The Beverly Hillbillies were funny and stupid all the same time. I loved watching them. Granny was my favorite. You did a great job with this lens. I really enjoyed it. I don't want Granny come running after me with the rolling pin, so I will give this 5 stars. It's worth it.

- Due to the inbreeding that is customary here in the south, I must confess that I am the daughter of Ellie Mae Clampett and her second cousin, Jethro Bodine. No worries though, I keep them both locked in the cellar with a daily jug of moonshine like a good daughter should. I need to go...I found some freshly hit roadkill I need to cook up for supper.

The Getaway Vehicle?
Keep Your Eyes Peeled. Your Vigilance May Help Apprehend these Rebels!
Although authorities maintain that the "hillbillies'"escape vehicle has been captured with the Ralph Foster Museum in Point Lookout, MO near the metropolis of Silver Dollar City, being used as a storage facility for the foreseeable future, some theorize that this may be a ruse on the part of authorities to lull the gang into apathy, and cause their distinctive vehicle to reappear on our public streets!
"These hillbillies aren't very sophisticated," the thinking goes. They'll never figure out just how tricky us "city folk" can be.

Granny -- Backwoods Scientific Genius
Vittles for the Boys?

Genetic engineering? Selective Breeding? We are not sure, but there is evidence (obtained through secret surveillence pictures) that Granny may have been attempting to provide "Giant Jackrabbits" for nourishment for Southern troops. This provision of much-needed supplies may have turned the tide during the actual conflict. There is some fear that animal-loving Elly May is actually involved with the care of these "critters."
Say It Ain't So, Duke...err, John!
Stunning Evidence of a Possible John Wayne Alliance with the Clampett Clan
Authorities indicate that they believe Wayne actually had no real ties with the Clampetts, and even have a tape indicating that Wayne was expected at a battle Granny and the Clampetts had with several "Injuns," but did not show up. Moses's question to Wayne was "Where were you when I needed you, John?" Wayne is said to have had no answer.
How Many Questions Did You Get Right?
2. Jed's wife was Rose Ellen Clampett.
3. Jethro's father was Fred Bodine.
4. Trick question. There were two chimps. The first was named Skipper. The second, which was introduced later, was Cousin Bessie. The running gag was that Bessie could regularly outsmart Jethro.
5. $25,000,000 was the payment. Of course, once the money got into the Drysdale's bank it grew.
6. Jethro was in 273 of the 274 episodes. He was not in the next to the last episode filmed.

Outraged Neighbors
The Innocent Drysdales Speak Their Mind
The words of Margaret Drysdale, neighbor of the Clampetts and unsuspecting wife of the co-conspirator Milton Drysdale as she was interviewed standing before the now-vacant Clampett mansion.
"I was always suspicious of them! And they were so, so crass. I told Milburn that we needed to send them away the very moment they got here. The stench of that lard soap that Granny was alway making is still in my nostrils! That wretched, wretched little woman!"
Sonny Drysdale, only son of Margaret and Milburn, had an opinion as well."There was obviously something amiss with the entire household, especially Elly May. Many were the times that I offered to take her into my arms and show her pleasures which she could only imagine in her fondest dreams, and she turned me down again and again. Obviously a woman intent on completing whatever nefarious mission she may have had. Nobody could possibly have resisted my charms so often and so effectively unless she had been completely single-minded."

During this interview authorities arrived to apprehend the wyly banker, but Drysdale managed to elude those who were there to arrest him. Upon being told of her husband's complicity with the Clampetts, Mrs. Drysdale became faint, and managed to stumble to her car before the shock was to great for her to bear. She fainted, and was assisted by an EMS unit which was summoned immediately. Physicians indicate that this entire incident has been an enormous strain on Mrs. Drysdale. They believe her hospitalization will last at least 30 to 60 days.
