Warren Buffett - the Second Richest Man in the World

Warren Buffett aka The Oracle of Omaha aka the Sage of Omaha, is currently the second richest man in the world with a net worth of around $37 billion [as of March 2009]. At the age of 7 he said he would be a millionaire before he was 35 (and he was right). Also when he was 7 he asked for a book on buying and selling bonds as a Christmas present. At the age of 10 he said he would one day be the world's richest man (he was right here too). In the current market crisis Warren Buffett has been buying - Goldman Sachs, GE, Wells Fargo, BYD.

Warren Buffett is the principal shareholder and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway.

His success in the stockmarkets is unrivalled and has been achieved by a philosophy of long-term investing in good ole stocks and shares, buying well-managed companies and holding them for the very long-term.

Despite the fact that he is a multi-billionaire he is not particularly interested in money for himself. In 2006 he received a salary of $100,000 which, compared to what other CEOs pay themselves, is negligible. He lives in a house in Omaha that he paid $31,500 for back in 1958.

Warren Buffett has recently moved into the area of philanthropy. In 2006, he decided to give away his enormous fortune to charity, with 83% of it intended for the Bill & Melinda

Gates Foundation. In June 2006 he donated approximately $30.7 billion of Berkshire Hathaway Class B shares to the Foundation. This is the single largest donation ever made to a charity. The intention is for the Foundation to receive 5% of the donation each year.

Warren Buffet has 3 children but will not be leaving a "significant proportion" of his wealth to them.

He has said "I want to give my kids just enough so that they would feel that they could do anything, but not so much that they would feel like doing nothing."

Warren Buffett has admitted that he made some mistakes last year and even Berkshire Hathaway's share price has fallen by about 40% in the current market turmoil, but given that he is a long-term investor he remains confident for the future. If you are interested in online stock trading
then Warren Buffett is clearly one to follow but his long-term buy and hold strategy has not ptoved very successful recently he would have done better to have sold a few and then bought them back.

Warren Buffett Named CEO of the Year 2008 by Morningstar

Warren Buffett aka the Oracle of Omaha finally chosen as CEO of the Year

Each year Morningstar names its CEO of the Year, this year they have named Warren Buffett as CEO of the Year - it is awarded to the CEO "who exhibits exemplary corporate stewardship, demonstrates independent thinking, creates lasting value for shareholders, and has put his or her stamp on an industry." What took them so long ?

Warren Buffett is a long-term value investor who back in 2003 stated that derivatives were "toxic" and "financial weapons of mass destruction." - his good friend and colleague Charlie Munger, was more outspoken, saying : "To say derivative accounting in America is a sewer is an insult to sewage."

In summing up their decision Morningstar state : "While many corporate managers may say they are positive and careful stewards of owner capital, few overtly view common shareholders for what they really are--partners. For being a successful managing partner, both in principle as well as in practice, Warren Buffett is our 2008 CEO of the Year."

The Snowball - Warren Buffet and the Business of Life by Alice Schroeder

Warren Buffett's Authorized Biography

Warren Buffet often says : 'Life is like a snowball. The important thing is finding wet snow and a really long hill'.

The Snowball - Warren Buffett and the Business of Life by Alice Schroeder is the authorized biography of Warren Buffett and will no doubt be a best-seller. A signed first edition would be nicem but as far as I know Warren Buffett hasn't signed any. Alice Schroeder on the other hand has signed a few so you might like to pick one up on Ebay as an investment. (NB. Don't read it and store it upright, out of direct sunlight - if you intend reading it, buy a second cheaper copy for reading).

Alice Schroeder had unprecedented access to Warren Buffett and has been able to explore his life and work with him.

The biography is up to date, covering the current economic crisis.

"It could all end on a dime if they flooded the system with enough liquidity, but there are consequences to doing that. If dramatic enough, the consequences would be the immediate expectation of huge inflation. A lot of things would happen that you might not like. The economy is definitely tanking. It's not my game, but if I had to bet one way or another - everyone else says a recession will be short and shallow, but I would say long and deep."

While everyone has been selling, Warren Buffett has been buying ! He recently bought $5bn of preferred stock in Goldman Sachs, $3 billion in GE and has a 9.4% stake in Wells Fargo.

Interestingly both Barack Obama and John McCain have said Warren Buffett would make a good treasury secretary Warren Buffett for Treasury Secretary He certainly would have been a better choice than Tim Geithner
