Wart Faqs

What are warts?

To get rid of warts effectively, it's important that you find out what they are. Warts are also known by their medical name verrucae. They are generally benign growths that appear on the skin or sometimes, in mucous membranes. Warts can appear on people regardless of age and sex.

What causes warts?

A wart is actually an infection that is caused by viruses belonging to the HPV (human papilloma virus) family. There are over 100 HPV types, which explains why there are warts that appear on different parts of the skin - the neck, feet, hands, inside the mouth, even on the genital and rectal areas.

Warts are usually painless but some can be itchy or painful.

How are warts passed on?

Warts are passed from one person to the next through physical contact. Touching another person's warts can pass the virus on to you. Using an affected person's personal stuff might also expose you to the virus. Genital warts are only passed on through sexual contact.

Getting rid of warts

If you have warts, sometimes getting rid of them will simply mean letting them disappear naturally. Most warts go away without any treatment. Generally, if the warts don't bother you, they're usually harmless. However, if the warts bleed or cause discomfort or embarrassment, it's best to have them treated.

Before a doctor will prescribe a form of treatment, he will first perform a diagnosis of the warts. The appearance will be evaluated or if necessary, a sample will be taken for a biopsy in order to determine if there are any complications.

Treating warts

There is no one treatment that will cure warts once and for all. Generally, doctors will recommend a method to remove the wart physically and will teach you a way to manage them, should they reappear. For young patients, though, doctors usually will recommend little or no treatment. For adults, treatment is often indicated in order to prevent the warts from spreading.

To get rid of warts, there are several methods that a doctor might recommend. These include:

Chemical removal

The chemical removal of warts is an effective way of getting rid of them. The goal here is to destroy the wart or allow the chemical to peel it off. There are over-the-counter preparations that a patient can use, such as those that contain salicylic acid.

Doctors may also prescribe topical ointments, such as those that contain stronger concentrations of medications that destroy the wart. These can include cantharin or podophyllin. A diluted preparation of bleomycin may also be used, injected directly into the wart. This is a chemotherapy drug that may be used to get rid of resistant warts.

Physical removal

There are several ways a doctor can help you get rid of a wart. It can be excised or cut off surgically, destroyed through laser, curetted or scraped off or burned.

Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy involves freezing the wart using liquid nitrogen. The extreme cold will harden the wart so it can be removed physically.

Getting rid of genital warts

Never try to treat genital warts on your own. Over-the-counter medications and home remedies will often make the problem worse. Always consult your doctor regarding this. Your doctor can remove the warts through chemical treatments, laser surgery, injections or cryotherapy.

Preventing warts

The best way to get rid of warts and prevent them from causing trouble is to treat them as soon as they appear. This will ensure they don't grow bigger or spread to nearby areas. To prevent the occurrence of ano-genital warts, it's recommended that safe sex practices are used. Being careful with the choice of sexual partners and using condoms can help reduce the risk.
