WarWoman Dell

WarWoman Dell is located in the Northeast section of Georgia in a great town called Clayton.

Clayton, Georgia reminds me of a small Gatlinburg, TN. The drive to Clayton remains me of the mountains in Colorado; they just seem to be right in front of you.

Clayton is located in Rabun County and you will see a little of everything there, mountains, waterfalls, springs, forest, lakes and so much more.

Rabun County is nestled in the southern tip of the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains. It is a convenient drive from the major metro areas of Atlanta-GA, Asheville-NC, Greenville-SC and Chattanooga-TN.

A Brief History of WarWoman Dell:

WarWoman was a beloved Cherokee dignitary who voiced the decision of the Council on war and peace. These "pretty women" had the power to decide the fate of captives. Legend states that each spring this woman visited the Dell to preside over rituals.

America's first natural-born botanist, William Bartram, explored the area in the 1770's. He documented the plants, climate, geology and culture of the people of this period and paved the way for future development.

A railroad bed was constructed here which would have connected the south and mid-western markets in Cincinnati. Work stopped suddenly at the beginning of the Civil War and no rails were ever laid.

Unmanaged logging in the late 1800's and early 1900's degraded the forests. The Civilian Conservaation Corps (CCCs) went to work restoring the land by planting trees and controlling erosion. Enrollees in Company 457 built the original picnic shelters, fish holding tanks, latrine and stonework drains in Warwoman Dell.

Step into my World

My recent visit to WarWoman

I was introduced to WarWoman Dell after attending a Woman's Ceremony that was held in that general area many moons ago. The second my feet touched the ground of WarWoman I was in love. This is a place that no matter where I moved, always stayed in my heart. WarWoman Dell, is among one of my sacred sanctuaries. The thought of being there again has brought me back to Georgia a few times after leaving it.

I hope that I can put this lens together in a way so you can feel the beauty of this place. In order to do that, I have a feeling I will be jumping around a bit. I want to start with an experience I had at WarWoman just recently (Sept. 2008).

Right by these steps use to be this HUGE rock. It's energy was amazing, it always reminded me of a DoorMan, inviting guest into a grand hotel. Now the rock is no longer there. I really do not know what happened to it, but it is gone.

During my visit I noticed many trees were down, some were partly cut and others just laid across the paths and across the creeks.

The Trails looked like no one has walked them in a very long time. It saddened me, because this use to be a Spiritual Gathering place for many people and today it felt empty.

The energy was almost non-existent, it did not feel as inviting as it did in the past. As I left, my spirit weeped for the energy that I once felt there.

The Most Important Thing

As I stood at this tiny waterfall my memories were flooded with the thoughts of when I use to carry my drum there and play.

I am going to post something I wrote back in 1998 (I believe) that I wrote while sitting at the very top of this area.

I remember feeling the presence of a little spirit girl who wandered around at WarWoman. I felt her presence on more than one occasion and others I have taken there felt her.

However, today I could no longer feel her. It felt as if she disappeared.

Nature's Beauty-WarWoman

As I sit here by the small waterfall at War woman Dell,
On the cool damp ground,
I look up and watch the leaves begin to flow downward,
Like a gentle fallen rain.

As each leaf begins its journey,
I become memorized by the beautiful dance it dances.
I hear the water singing its gentle tunes,
And every once in awhile I can feel the water spirits
Hitting me with droplets of water;
Just to let me know they are present.

If I listen closely, I can hear the memories of yesterday
And yet I can add more beauty to each memory.
As the icy waters journey down the rocks to join their
Relations in the pool of blended droplets; it reminds me
Of how all spirits eventually blends together,
To become one or to become whole.

The spiral dance of life is at its peak in my minds eye today.
October at War Woman Dell is a very magical place.
I enjoy sitting here watching the leaves getting ready for their journey. Witnessing their transformation while they change colors and
Flow back down to the Earth to become a part of it again.

I find myself very honored to be able to be a part of this wonderful time. Autumn is truly a new beginning; as each leaf disconnects from the tree,
and becomes a part of the Earth.
Indeed it is the beginning of a new journey.
I watch the shadows cascading across the hills that are filled with freshly fallen leaves. As the cool gentle rains begin to moisten the ground in preparation of new compost, I sense a very strong feeling of unification.

Our Mother Earth welcomes "All" back with open arms. As she absorbs the "All" back into her womb, we remember the unconditional love she offers beyond words and beyond sight.
My love is over whelmed for Gaea with all of her beauty,
And her unconditional love.

Helping to keep our Sanctuaries alive

The reason I placed the donation module at the top of this lens is because if you have a sacred place that you consider to be a Sanctuary, find some small way to help preserve it.

Don't let your sanctuary's energy disappear. Nature gives us these precious gifts to honor and to enjoy.
