Washer Dryer Combo Unit - How It Works
A washer dryer combo unit is a different animal than a conventional setup, where you have the washer and dryer as separate units sitting side by side, or even stacked one over the other. These regular units have the washer more or less permanently connected to dedicated water and flush lines, and the dryer has a dedicated high voltage outlet with a vent to the outside.
The washer dryer combo unit has none of these. So how does it work? Knowing how it works, what makes it different will help you decide if it's right for you.

Washer Dryer Combo Unit - Good to Have Connections

Many people will roll the unit over to the kitchen sink, hook it up to the faucet and position the hose to use the sink drain, then disconnect and roll it back after use. Others might use the faucet and drain available in the bathroom.

Washer Dryer Combo Unit - Keep It Condensed!
The conventional dryer heats air that circulates through the clothes, picking up the lint and moisture and pushing it outside. The washer dryer combo unit uses water based condensers. After the air is heated and circulated through the clothes, it is sent to a chamber (or drum) where the air is cooled and moisture is condensed out of it. This moisture is then pumped down the same drain as the wash water. Because of this comparatively gentle means of drying, clothes come out softer and tend to hold their colors better.

Washer Dryer Combo Unit - Front Load It!
The washer dryer combo unit is a front load style machine. The horizontal axis drum that comes with the front load design eliminates the agitator mechanism. The agitator tends to be hard on clothes and not the most functional for cleaning. The front load design works more like a washboard, raising the clothes out of the soap and water and then pushing them back in. The high RPMs (like 1000 or more) of the spin cycle get the water and soap residue out of clothes better than standard washers.
