Drug Scene

Washington is in line with national averages for drug and alcohol admissions. However, even though the overall percentages are similar some drugs such as meth are much more common in Washington, whilst others are not (heroin, cocaine). Over 38,000 were admitted into substance abuse treatment centers during 2007. Around 6,500 of those admitted were for alcohol abuse alone, meaning the majority were admitted for drug treatment. Like most states, marijuana is the most commonly abused illict drug. This article will examine the presence of several drugs within Washington.

Meth in Washington

Meth use is generally considered a West Coast drug, and Washington is no exception. Although meth abuse is not as high as California or Oregon, meth / methamphetamine admissions are well above the national average. 6,378 people (16.7%) were admitted into facilities for amphetamines, over twice the national average of 7.7%. Indicative of a nationwide push to stop domestic meth production, the amount of meth lab incidents has rapidly decreased since 2005. However, this is also demonstrative of the increased trafficking of Mexican drug organizations.

Heroin in Washington

Heroin admissions in Washington make up about 6.6% of admissions for substance abuse. This is far below the national average of 13.6%. However, heroin abuse is still considered a very large problem in Washington. Heroin is one of the easiest drugs to overdose on and users will undergo some of the most serious physical withdrawal effects compared with other drugs.

Heroin typically has the largest impact on more populated areas in Washington, specifically Seattle and Tacoma. Like many other drugs in Washington, Heroin is primarily trafficked from Mexico through California and Oregon into Washington.
