What makes Heroes so intriguing besides the story are, of course, the main characters.  Each of the main characters have special abilities, from self regeneration to mental telepathy to flying.

The super powers that each of the characters have are what makes them special -- and at the same time, dangerous if you're a villain. If you're new to the show, then let's take a look at these so called "special abilities" that each of the characters possess.

So, without further ado, here are the characters of Heroes.

ANGELA PETRELLI

The character of Angela Petrelli is brilliantly portrayed by the lovely actress Cristine Rose. She is the mother of both Peter and Nathan Petrelli, and as we just discovered, the mother of Gabriel Gray, otherwise known as "Sylar." Angela has the ability to predict the future through her dreams. She is also the head of an organization otherwise known as "The Company", which tries to keep the secret of people with special abilities under the radar, as well as track them and lock up these people whom they deem to be "dangerous."


NOAH BENNET

The character of Noah Bennet is portrayed by the actor Jack Coleman. Noah Bennet is the father of cheerleader, Claire Bennet. Noah doesn't have special abilities, instead he was an agent working with the company towards tracking down and finding all people with special abilities. He often worked with a Haitian character who could erase the special abilities of anyone within his own presence, as well as strip anyone from their memories. Noah has played both sides of field -- one side with compassion towards the people with abilities, and the other side towards finding them and destroying them. He is now set against the company because they tried to come after his own daughter.  But now he is currently AGAIN working for the company, but this time his mission is to track down all the people who got away from the company's holding cell, who are deemed to be extremely dangerous.


NATHAN PETRELLI

The character of Nathan Petrelli is portrayed by Adrian Pasdar.  Nathan is the older to Peter and son of Angela Petrelli.  Nathan is a Congressman and is always involved in politics.  In the beginning his intentions were not exactly something to be proud of, but as time went on, Nathan's true leadership came to light and now all he wants to do is help people.  He now has a deep spirituality of life and love and would do anything for his younger brother Peter.  Nathan's special ability is flight, meaning he can fly.  He is often referred to as the "Flying Man" from his comrade and friend, Hiro Nakamura.


MATT PARKMAN

The character of Matt Parkman is played by Greg Gunberg.  Matt is a cop for the Los Angeles Police Department.  Matt has the ability to read minds.  Through a chance meeting of his father, his father displays the same powers as Matt, although much stronger and a lot more sporadic.  He explains to Matt that there are many other abilities he has yet to learn which he can perform, such as the ability to manipulate the thoughts of people and block others from reading his mind.  We have yet to really see Matt unlock these abilities besides when he battled his father, but we now know that he does, in fact, have these abilities.


NIKKI SANDERS / TRACY STRAUSS

The characters of Nikki & Tracy are played by the sexy Ali Larter.  Nikki was first introduced in seasons one and two.  Nikki had a split personality, whereby she was Nikki and Jessica.  Her other identity Jessica had super strength and was extremely vicious.  BY the end of season two, Nikki has passed away.  Now entering into season three, we discover Tracy Strauss, who looks exactly like Nikki, but is a completely different person.  Tracy has the ability to freeze things by touching them.  We learn that Tracy, Nikki and Jessica (whom died in the previous episodes) were sisters and they were all part of a scientific experiment that gave them their super abilities.


CLAIRE BENNET

The character of Claire Bennet is portrayed by the adorable Hayden Panettiere.  Claire is a cheerleader at her local highschool and is also the adopted daughter of Noah Bennet. Claire has the ability to heal.  She can never get hurt.  Later on, we also discover that she can regenerate her body as well, meaning if she cuts off her arm, it will grow back right away.  Claire can never be killed and will live forever... or so it seems.  There does appear to be a weakness though.  If an object or something hits her brain and gets lodged in there, it will paralyze her and give the impression of death.  Once the object is removed, she will regenerate again and come back to life.


MOHINDER SURESH

The character of Dr. Mohinder Suresh is played by Sendhil Ramamurthy.  Mohinder is the one person who saught out people with special abilities to do research on them.  In the beginning, Mohinder's goal was to help find a cure for people with special abilities, but as time went on, Mohinder discovered a formula as a way of restructuring human DNA and providing normal people with these special abilities he had been trying to cure.  Mohinder used himself as a test subject and at first it gave him unnatural abilities of strength and endurance... but as time goes on, we are discovering that this little science experiment is turning Mohinder into something much worse.


HIRO NAKAMURA

The character of Hiro Nakamura is portrayed by the actor Masi Oka.  Hiro is from Japan and is usually seen with his sidekick named Ando.  While Ando does not have any special abilities, Hiro's ability is very unique in that he can stop and alter time.  He has the ability to time travel, slow time down, as well as speed it up again.  He is constantly challenging himself to save the world and truly believes that this must be his destiny. Hiro and Ando travel all over the world to try and stop tragic things from happening, but the end result is that they usually make matters much worse for themselves.


PETER PETRELLI

The character of Peter Petrelli is played by actor Milo Ventimiglia.  Peter is the younger brother of Nathan Petrelli and son of Angela Petrelli.  Peter is likely the most special Hero of them all, as he has the ability to absorb ANYONE'S power by just being near them or touching them.  This makes him out to be a SUPERHERO because he has so many abilities... such as the ability to turn invisible, time travel, alter time, heal himself, shoot fire from his hands, ignite himself to explode like a nuclear weapon, fly, etc.  He is truly the strongest of them all and has a great, kind heart.


GABRIEL GRAY / SYLAR

The character of Gabriel Gray is well played by the actor Zachary Quinto.  Gabriel (also known as Sylar) is the ultimate bad guy.  He has similar powers like Peter, only Sylar must take them away from his victims manually by cutting off their skulls and removing their abilities through their brains.  Sylar killed many heroes to get their abilities through what he calls "the hunger", an unstoppable force that acts like an addiction.  He now works with Noah Bennet and is trying to recapture all of the dangerous people that escaped from level five, a holding cell for dangerous people with special abilities the company used.  He was also informed that Angela Petrelli is his real mother.
