The Defective Detective

Monk is an dramady series created by Andy Breckman and starring Tony Shalhoub as Mr. Monk.

Adrian Monk was a brilliant detective for the San Francisco Police Department until his wife, Trudy, was killed by a car bomb, which Monk believed was intended for him. Trudy's death led Monk to suffer a nervous breakdown and he was discharged from the force, becoming a recluse, refusing to leave his house for over three years. With the help of his nurse, he was finally able to leave the house. The breakthrough allowed him to work as a private detective and a consultant for the homicide unit despite retaining limitations rooted in his obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

Whatever happened to the good old sitcoms? Is there any originality left in television anymore? When searching for a worthwhile TV show, there is one that stands out among them all. Monk, which airs at 8 p.m. Fridays on USA Network, is a welcome breath of fresh air in the midst of the "reality"-polluted airwaves of our TV screens. (Continue reading)

Monk isn't your average detective. His wife was killed in a car explosion 3 year ago. He suffered a major breakdown and is now trying to get reinstated on the police force with the help of his private nurse. Monk's got lots of problems. He is Obsessive Compulsive, has fear of crowds, heights, the dark, and milk. Yes milk. Yet he is the greatest detective around. In one episode he even tried to straighten up the crime scene because the mess was driving him crazy.

Watching this show gives me OCD. I find myself being more and more like Monk. I hope I don't start touching every pillar in school and avoid stepping on cracks. lol. Monk and House are the only things I watch on TV... mostly Monk. So I don't know whether I like this version of the theme or the original which was for season 1. They both are good.

Discussion: Sharona vs. Natalie

The new season of Monk is pretty solid - but I still feel like it's missing something with the departure of Bitty Schram's character, Sharona. Maybe it's because I liked Sharona's character more, but it seems like this season of NCIS is focusing too many episodes on Natalie's romance. Judging by USA's message board, I seem to be in the minority of preferring Sharona over Natalie.

Which character do you like better?

Sharona

Belle says:

SHARONA! Without a doubt

Katie says:

It's Sharona all the way!!! Natalie has been on there long enough for me to get over the switch, but I just can't. Natalie is too boring. Sharona had that spunk that Monk needs.

Gloria says:

Sharona without a doubt. She complemented Monk so well, they had nice synergy going on.The way Natalie "teases" Monk just does not work.

sharonafan says:

well sharona of course nathalie is just without any personality "ok Mr Monk" and im sure Monk liked being with sharona more he was so sad when she left but if Nathalie leave one day (i hope very soon) Monk wont care

Monkwatcher says:

Having watched episodes with both, I love Sharona. Natalie has no personality. You could replace her tomorrow with somebody completely different, and it wouldn't matter at all.
Sharona had a real character.

Natalie

jackie says:

Natalie loves Monk.

Dylan says:

natalie! she is perfect and sharona annoyed me

JamTart says:

Sharona wasn't right to help Monk she was pusshy and impatient where natalie wasn't! Plus her daughter is awesome!

monkwatcher3000 says:

definitely Natalie. she is just so humorous .

someone who knows says:

she is the best

Best and Funniest Show in Years

Monk is not just another crime drama. Viewers remain interested week after week as Monk solves cases by noticing seemingly mundane things, such as a picture on a wall or a missing belt on a uniform. Whether it's watching Monk freak out over germs, learning to deal with his irrational phobias or the antics of overly cocky Lt. Randy Disher, the audience is left in hysterics. This isn't one of those shows where I'll say "Well, if you have some extra time one Friday night and you're feeling bored..." No, trust me, this is a show you want to MAKE time for.

Monk is a great show that offers something for everyone. Whether the viewer is in the mood for drama, comedy, action or sometimes even romance, Monk never fails to provide. If you're tired of being overwhelmed by hundreds of unoriginal and unrealistic reality shows, do yourself a favor and tune in to Monk. As Monk would say, "You'll thank me later."
