After his father deserted the family, Michael Scofield took up his mother's maiden name in order to start a new life because his mother told him that his father, Aldo Burrows was addicted to alchohol. After their mother's death from a brain aneurysm, Lincoln became his guardian and took care of him. Having lost both their parents, Lincoln descended into a life of crime while preventing Michael from suffering the same fate.

Following the death of his mother, he and Lincoln moved in with the family of Lincoln's friend, Veronica Donovan. That situation was short-lived. Afterwards, Michael and Lincoln traveled in and out of different foster home situations. Though they were usually kept together, there were periods time when circumstances required them to be placed separately. Once such instance occurred when Lincoln did a six-month stretch in juvenile hall on an assault charge when he was seventeen and Michael was eleven.

Michael was placed with a foster father in the Pershing section of Chicago. Though several reports had been filed suggesting the man was abusive and routinely locked his charges in a small storage shed, no formal inquiry had been made prior to Michael's placement. Six months into Michael's stay, his foster father was found dead in his home, a victim of a violent attack. For better or worse, young Michael Scofield repressed all memory of what had occurred and was not able to help police in their investigation. To this day, the murder investigation remains unsolved.

When Michael would wake up in the morning not knowing where his brother was, there would be an origami crane next to his bed, a sign his brother was watching out for him. In high school, Michael took an elective survey class in Arts and Crafts, which had a large section devoted to the Japanese art of origami. He was immediately drawn to the precision and patience that the practice required. He was particularly fond of constructing cranes and began to do so out of any material he could find. Michael's practice of making paper cranes carried over into his adulthood.

Michael was a gifted student, and finished his secondary education at Morton East High School in Cicero, Illinois with an impeccable record. He graduated magna cum laude with Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from Loyola University in Chicago. He went on to become a successful structural engineer at the firm of Middleton, Maxwell & Schaum in downtown Chicago.

The sixteenth episode of the series, "Brother's Keeper", reveals Michael and Lincoln's relationship three years before Lincoln was imprisoned at Fox River and the reason why Michael would go to such extreme lengths to save his brother from his death sentence. Michael's discovery of his mis-perception of his brother and his brother's sacrifice for him prompts him to change and help Lincoln.

In season 3 it is revealed that Michael is fluent in Spanish.

After their mother's death, Lincoln became Michael's guardian. Lincoln dropped out of Morgan Park High School in Toledo, Ohio during his sophomore year and moved to Chicago to begin his life of crime. Prior to being convicted for the murder of the Vice President's brother, he had been convicted of theft, criminal damage to property, possession of drug paraphernalia, and battery. He and Lisa Rix had a son together, Lincoln Burrows, Jr. (L.J.) (played by Marshall Allman).

When Michael was 18, Lincoln borrowed $90,000 to pay for Michael's university education, telling him that it was his half of his mother's life insurance. There really was no life insurance and this money was the start of the events which ultimately led to Lincoln being sentenced to death. This was revealed in the flashback episode, "Brother's Keeper". Lincoln's actions instigates Michael's feeling of guilt and responsibility, which explains his reason for creating an elaborate plan to rescue his brother.

Raised in Chicago, Sara Tancredi's ambitions to be a doctor began when she was very young. While at Northwestern University, where she was a Phi Beta Kappa, she was introduced to the works of Mahatma Gandhi and decided to become a humanitarian, which later influenced her decision to work at Fox River State Penitentiary. Another factor which contributed to her occupational choice was her past morphine addiction, culminating in being unable to help a boy after he was run over because she was high, which was revealed in a flashback episode of the first season, "Brother's Keeper". At 29 years old, Dr. Sara Tancredi was one of the few doctors working at Fox River. Her chosen occupation became a constant source of stress for her father. Sara is the only child of the Governor of Illinois, Frank Tancredi (John Heard). Due to her father's hectic political career and vastly differing beliefs, she did not have a close relationship with him. In episode "Buried", it was revealed that her mother has already died.

Alexander Mahone has been a Special Agent of the FBI, specializing in manhunts for escaped prisoners for 14 years. After the protagonist of the series, Michael Scofield (played by Wentworth Miller), successfully orchestrated the escape of eight prisoners from Fox River State Penitentiary, Mahone is assigned to spearhead the task force assembled to bring in the fugitives. He is 42 years old.

Alex is depicted in the series as serious and intelligent. In his first appearance in the series, Mahone quickly proves his status as a capable adversary against Michael when he discovers the secret of his tattoos and profiles Michael's meticulous scheme while combing through his former apartment. His first step in cracking the code leads him to the location of Michael's supplies stockpile just moments after the fugitives have excavated it. This demonstrates Mahone's intellect, and his analysis and interpretation of his surroundings which is similar to Michael's.

Fernado Sucre is of Puerto Rican descent and was the cellmate of Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller), though he was briefly separated from this role because he originally wanted nothing to do with Michael's escape attempt. Haywire (Silas Weir Mitchell) replaced him. After Michael engineered Haywire's removal as his cellmate, Sucre returns, this time anxious to have a role in the escape.

During his time at Fox River Penitentiary he appeared to be in good terms with almost all correctional officers and other inmates prior to the prison break. He's easily one of the members of the Fox River Eight whose loyalty towards Michael is unquestionable, (as seen in "The Art of the Deal" when at gunpoint, countless times, he does not give up any info regarding the whereabouts of Michael) the other one being Lincoln Burrows.

Fernando also has a knack for making unconventional and seemingly-mundane yet effective strategies from time to time, as seen when he managed to successfully cover up the hole that Scofield's PI crew dug up. His ability to come up with bizarre improvisations makes him just about as intellectually formidable as Michael is. Outside, he displayed being able to hot wire various vehicles in record time, which was a valuable asset for Michael and all the other cons that Scofield took with him on the night of the escape.

Brad Bellick has wanted to be a correctional officer his entire life. He was employed at Fox River shortly after graduating high school and has been there ever since. Due to his belief that punishment is the primary purpose of prison and not rehabilitation, he and Warden Henry Pope (played by Stacy Keach) do not always agree on several issues. Nevertheless, Warden Pope continues to give him more responsibility with the intention of having Bellick succeed him as warden when he retires. As described by his ex-colleague, Bellick is as "crooked as scoliosis", referring to his corruption as a guard at Fox River. Bellick is about 40 years old, judging from his own words in "The Killing Box".

In the second season, the character's role changes as the main plot moves away from the prison setting, which allows him to remain as one of the main characters in the series. While not as intelligent as Scofield or Agent Mahone, he has shown himself to be highly cunning, and in Season 2 was able to track down several of the Fox River escapees and travel across America on a low budget. As of season four Bellick has come to be a member of Scofield's team dedicated to locating Scylla.

A native of Conecuh County, Alabama, Theodore Bagwell was born of both incest and rape after his father sexually assaulted his Down syndrome-afflicted sister named Audrey. He was also molested by his father. Theodore's father is also the person responsible for his eloquent use of language, making him learn whole encyclopedias and dictionaries believing this would enable his son to lead a better life and maybe even become President one day. He once ordered his son to recite 10 synonyms for 'destroy' to demonstrate his ability in front of some friends of his father. Bagwell spent his youth in and out of jail, often for vandalism and torturing animals. While in fourth grade, he attempted to set his teacher's house on fire and was sentenced to juvenile hall. During this time, he became a member of the Alliance for Purity, a white supremacist group.

As an adult, T-Bag starts committing more serious crimes such as battery, assault, attempted murder, murder, rape, and kidnapping. He quickly becomes the leader of the Alliance for Purity inside Donaldson Prison in Alabama and under his leadership the gang becomes so powerful inside the prison that the warden disbands it and sends T-Bag to Fox River.

Prior to incarceration at Fox River, Bagwell eludes the authorities and pursues a relationship with a single mother named Susan Hollander, who has two children of her own from a previous marriage. This was one of the storylines featured in the first season's flashback episode, "Brother's Keeper". Upon learning that he is a wanted murderer and rapist (by watching America's Most Wanted), she notifies the police. T-Bag had genuine feelings for Susan and had tried to change, but her betrayal prompts "that old dirty bastard [to come] right back home".

Upon seeing that there are no Alliance for Purity members at Fox River, T-Bag starts a new chapter of the gang; its growth grants him significant influence within the prison. An open bisexual, he has no qualms about seeking sexual gratification from other inmates, often preying upon younger men. As the leader of a white supremacist group, T-Bag is the most villainous of the Fox River Eight. In the second season, the character's storyline veers from the main plot as a separate subplot. As the series progresses, more of the background story of the character is revealed.

Gretchen Morgan is a merciless and impatient woman who performs swift executions without hesitation if there is any obstacle to her plan. A woman who replaces the former antagonist in Season 2, William Kim, she is shown to be able to withstand torture and is exceptionally skilled in martial arts.

Before joining the Company, Gretchen was a soldier for the U.S. Army. She is from Wheeling, West Virginia as revealed by The Pad Man. While stationed in Mosul, she was captured by insurgent forces. One night she attempted an escape, not knowing that a hostage exchange to secure her release had already been arranged. Consequently, she was tortured and raped by her captors (resulting in numerous mutilations on her thighs), and the soldiers that were sent to secure her release were killed. It is implied that this event put her over the edge, turning her into the person and operative that she now is. In her head, the Company's mission versus Burrows and Scofield is a war where all means are acceptable. In the end, she is a psychopath. Deranged, out of touch with reality, and unable to asses the consequences of her violent nature.

SEASON ONE EPISODES

Michael Scofield, a structural engineer, attempts to rob a bank in order to get incarcerated at Fox River State Penitentiary, where his brother Lincoln Burrows, accused of murdering the Vice President's brother, is scheduled to be executed. At Fox River, Michael approaches a number of inmates, all of whom play an important role in his plan to free his brother from the inside. Meanwhile, Secret Service Agents Kellerman and Hale are determined to make sure the execution goes through as planned. Lincoln's son, LJ, gets into trouble.

Michael seeks the help of his fellow prison inhabitants to execute his escape plans. Racial tensions escalate inside the prison.

When Michael reveals his escape plan to Sucre, Sucre chooses to be no part of it, and requests a cell transfer. Michael gets a new cellmate called Haywire.

Veronica uncovers new information regarding Lincoln's case and decides she wants to work on the case full-time. When no one wants to help her, an attorney named Nick Savrinn offers his assistance and the two of them visit Lincoln. Michael's new cellmate, Haywire, causes problems with the escape plans.

Kellerman and Hale blackmail Warden Pope. Michael finds out he might get out of Fox River earlier than anticipated. Veronica becomes uncertain of her allies.

Michael creates a lockdown by sabotaging the air conditioning in order to execute his breakout plan and unintentionally causes a riot that gets Sara into huge trouble. Meanwhile, an ex-con is blackmailed into seeing to that Lincoln is killed.

While the riot intensifies, Abruzzi and Sucre join forces. Michael must decide whether or not to save the life of Dr. Tancredi.

Michael finds out a storeroom fundamental to his escape plans has been converted into a break room. Veronica and Nick are being threatened, so they go to Nick's place which is off the radar of the Secret Service.

Abruzzi's demotion in the prison hierachy puts the entire escape plan at risk. Michael finds himself in the uneviable position of trying to protect T-Bag's new "fish" and facing the threat of T-Bag exposing the plan to the guards. The inmates dig themselves into a hole.

Abruzzi struggles to get his crew back to PI. He tries to convince Michael to reveal Fibonacci's whereabouts to Falzone. Agents Kellerman and Hale receive some professional help for their search, as the Vice President isn't satisfied about their progress so far. An inmate becomes suspicious of the escapees' work in the break room. Steadman's money trail leads Veronica and Nick to a surprising discovery.

Michael gets a visit from his wife, much to everyone's surprise. She brings him what appears to be a credit card, but is in fact something entirely different. Bellick does some research after seeing Michael's wife, whom he thinks looks familiar. Michael learns that his watch has been stolen by a guard, and he must enlist the help of an inmate in order to get it back. In the woods, Veronica, LJ and Nick are threatened by Quinn, who is determined to find out who else knows about the conspiracy.

After learning all the escapees can't make it over the prison wall, the group decides to get rid of T-Bag. T-Bag has a plan of his own that doesn't involve him staying inside. His "insurance", however, is too obvious for Abruzzi, who takes action to undermine it. Sucre gets some news from Maricruz.

A bleeding Abruzzi is transported to a hospital. With Lincoln's execution scheduled for the following day, Veronica comes out of hiding to contact him and gains an ally. Kellerman makes the ultimate sacrifice to preserve the conspiracy. Michael looks for a way to get Lincoln out of solitary confinement in time for the escape that evening. The PI crew gets a prolonged stay in the break room they're renovating as they prepare to attempt their escape.

Michael and the other prisoners attempt to return to their cells without being detected. Veronica and Nick take Lincoln's case before a judge. Sara asks her dad, the governor, to review Lincoln's case. Michael tries to postpone the execution by fiddling with the chair's wirings.

As Lincoln is about to be executed, he sees his father in the viewing room. A phone call from Judge Kessler delays the execution. After reviewing the newly surfaced evidence, the judge orders the exhumation of Steadman's body. Michael creates a new, more dangerous, break-out plan, involving going through the prison yard. An accident puts Michael's new plan in danger.

Flashbacks shed light on the past actions that led to the incarceration of Lincoln, Sucre, T-Bag and C-Note. The basis of Michael's ingenious break-out plan is revealed. Dr. Tancredi recalls how she ended up in Fox River State Penitentiary.

Lincoln is worried about Michael's sanity while Michael has trouble remembering some parts of the prison schematics. Sucre has to conceal the hole in the guard's break room. Warden Pope transfers Michael to solitary after he declines his request.

In an effort to recreate the missing piece of the tattoo, Michael gets transferred to the psych ward, seeking the help of Haywire. T-Bag and C-Note have to join forces.

Michael must get the key to the infirmary and enlist the help of an old face, while Lincoln learns the identity of his kidnapper and another inmate learns of the escape.

Westmoreland wants Michael to speed up the planned escape, and Bellick gets one step closer to unraveling it. Michael has to decide whether to involve Sara in the breakout plan. Tweener's devotion is put to a test. Veronica finds out that her ally has a connection to an inmate serving time at Fox River.

Everyone's ready to make their escapes across the high wire. Veronica and Nick realize they may be in over their heads. Agent Kellerman helps Vice President Reynolds calm down before her debate.

As the escape is in progress, Warden Pope and Captain Bellick begin a search to detain the escapees. Michael and company struggle to reach the airfield as the police is hot on their heels. Veronica discovers a major piece of evidence that could prove Lincoln's innocence. The Vice President is worried about losing her authority.

SEASON TWO EPISODES

Eight hours have passed since the escape. Michael, Lincoln, Sucre, C-Note and Abruzzi continue to evade their pursuers. Bellick is forced to relinquish command of the search party to FBI Special Agent Alexander Mahone whose ingenious approach makes Michael's life as a fugitive harder. As a result from her overdose, Dr. Tancredi is in critical condition. A short-handed T-Bag faces the ultimate challenge.

Mahone tries to lure the brothers by targeting an imprisoned LJ. Sucre, Abruzzi and C-Note have a plan of their own, but only to break free of their pursuers. Meanwhile, Bellick and Warden Pope feel the heat following their unsuccessful attempts to capture the escapees. Tweener infiltrates a bunch of college students on their way to spring break.

Michael and a wounded Lincoln try to outmaneuver Mahone, who is hot on their trail. Sara gets a surprise visit to her bedside. Following his termination, Bellick recruits a resolute partner to aid in his quest to get the escapees behind bars. Sucre and C-Note head out for their family reunions-regardless of being observed by the authorities.

Bellick sets out to find the money stolen by Westmoreland during the 1971 skyjacking. Kellerman targets Sara, who receives a long-awaited phone call. T-Bag gets a ride from an unsuspecting family. Abruzzi resumes the search for Fibonacci to settle the scores once and for all.

Michael and Lincoln are eager to locate the Double K ranch where Westmoreland hid his millions. Sucre goes to Las Vegas to prevent Maricruz from marrying his cousin Hector. C-Note gets on a train. Mahone is given an important package.

Mahone takes an interest in the story of DB Cooper. In their quest to find Westmoreland's treasure, Michael and Lincoln travel house-to-house in Utah. Haywire's journey outside the prison walls continues. Sucre bumps into an acquaintance.

Michael, Sucre, T-Bag and C-Note claim the hidden treasure. An anxious Lincoln risks everything to get to LJ. Kellerman rethinks where his loyalties lie after Sara gets to The Company's hit list. Mahone resorts to deadly force to get the truth out of Tweener.

In his efforts to try to get hold of all of the money Sucre runs into some unexpected difficulties. Bellick and his partner have not given up on finding their old inmates.

In an effort to learn more about his pursuer Michael cozies up to Mahone's wife. L.J. and Lincoln have a bumpy road-trip. T-Bag receives a surprise, and C-Note's wife must choose between her daughter and husband.

As Michael reunites with Sara, Mahone and Kellerman strive to make sure they stay apart. On the road with LJ, Lincoln meets his father. Sucre tries to contact Maricruz. T-Bag has a reunion of his own.

As Lincoln tries to reunite with Michael, he has to say goodbye to another loved one. Michael attempts to obtain a getaway plane. T-Bag gets revenge. Sara and Kellerman face-off.

With Mahone on their trail, Michael, Lincoln, their father, and Sucre make a run for the getaway plane. Michael's reunion with his father sheds light on his difficult childhood. The women in Bellick and Kellerman's lives coerce their men to confess their sins. A medical emergency forces C-Note to risk it all.

Bellick is anything but happy about his sudden homecoming-to Fox River. Elsewhere, Michael and Lincoln might face a homecoming of their own. Mahone and Kellerman use everything they have to make certain that Michael and Lincoln do not get through their road trip alive. Sucre's getaway plane encounters some difficulties. T-Bag closes in on Mrs. Hollander.

Bellick gets a taste of the medicine he gave out when he was the captain at Fox River. Agent Mahone's ex-wife makes another appearance, as Mahone is forced to make a difficult decision. Kellerman reveals his motivation for aiding the escape. T-Bag rekindles an old romance.

In Mexico, Sucre gets a car but gets in trouble with the police. Bellick has more trouble as prisoners who suffered under him want revenge.

C-Note gets into a tricky situation when a robber holds up the diner he is in. Michael, Lincoln and Kellerman get closer to revealing the conspiracy with the help of Sara. Mahone recruits Bellick.

Michael and Sara request Henry Pope's help in retrieving the information that could possibly exonerate Lincoln. Mahone pins down an escapee. Sucre discovers a new threat while hitchhiking to reunite with Maricruz. T-Bag brings the Hollander family to his home.

T-Bag digs deep and finds his 'nice-side' with the help of a psychiatrist. Michael, Lincoln, and Sara get their hands on evidence needed to clear Lincoln, while Kellerman is close to finding the President.

An unlikely alliance forms between Bellick and Sucre while Michael is determined to face the president. T-Bag gets into some trouble when he loses his luggage. C-Note faces major consequences after some of his actions.

Sara sacrifices herself for the safety of Michael so the brothers can get on with their final plan to attain freedom, but their plan gets 'shipwrecked'. Meanwhile, Bellick blackmails Sucre to partner up as T-Bag's streak of murder continues to the south of the border.

The day has finally come for Sara's trial. Michael is determined to stop T-Bag's reign of terror. Bellick is money hungry and will do whatever it takes to hunt down T-Bag. Kellerman decides his fate while Lincoln and Mahone square off.

Michael tries to save his brother and himself from the unstoppable Mahone. Kellerman's testimony at Sara's trial proves different from what was expected. Sucre puts everything on the line to save Maricruz. Just like old times, T-Bag and Bellick are at it again.

SEASON THREE EPISODES

Now locked up in a Panamanian prison known as Sona, Michael, T-Bag, Bellick, and Mahone try to find a way out. Much to their devastation, they soon find out that the prison has been abandoned by the authorities because of the immense threat from the vile inmates. Michael searches for an inmate named Whistler in the prison sewers. As Lincoln is puzzled by Sara's sudden disappearance, he learns that LJ has gotten into some trouble.

Michael and Mahone try to lure Whistler out of his hiding place. T-Bag gains some upward momentum in the prison hierarchy as the water supply is running low. Lincoln meets familiar and not so familiar faces on his quest to free Michael.

Whistler tells the truth to Michael. Michael tries to get in touch with Sara, but the only phone is in Lechero's quarters, so he has to rely on T-Bag's help. Mahone battles his addiction. Bellick steps on some toes.

After taking delivery of a package from The Company, Lincoln realizes that they are deadly serious. Michael's new break out plan relies on electricity. Haywire is back from the dead, haunting a disoriented Mahone. Bellick and T-Bag get special attention from Lechero.

A new inmate named Tyge is brought to Sona. After he seemingly recognizes Whistler, Michael's doubts arise. T-Bag enters a new area of commerce. Lincoln goes to the seaside with Sofia. Sucre takes over the side-business of his predecessor.

Michael threatens to cancel the escape plan unless he sees proof that Sara is still alive. Whistler is accused of murdering an inmate and it is up to Michael to prove his innocence and save his life. Lincoln and Sofia help in monitoring the morning guards. Mahone may have another way to get out of Sona.

Everything goes wrong for Michael as he tries to create a diversion. Lincoln tries to outsmart Susan. Sucre offers his assistance to Lincoln.

Susan jeopardizes Michael's life as she puts her own escape plan into motion. Whistler's past catches up to his girlfriend. The Company goes after Lincoln and Sucre. Justice prevails for Mahone. Lechero sheds light into an empty tunnel.

The Panamanian Army arranges for Michael to get a taste of solitary. T-Bag reserves a spot in the escape. Bellick's life turns into an uphill battle. Susan traps Sucre.

Lechero's demotion devastates Michael's breakout plan as Sammy takes the reigns at Sona. T-Bag forces Bellick to fight in the ring where the odds are stacked heavily against him. Lincoln and Sucre have some surprise fireworks set for Susan.

Michael's escape may be in jeopardy because of heavy rain. T-Bag and Lechero join forces, while Bellick hopes to do the same with Mahone.

Michael, Whistler, McGrady and Mahone make their break from Sona. But Mahone seems like the odd man out along the way.

Michael and Lincoln are left with no choice but to hand Whistler over in exchange to save LJ and Sofia. A familiar face enters Sona while another inmate leaves.

SEASON FOUR EPISODES

Michael has trailed Gretchen/Susan, Whistler and Mahone to L.A. Chaos reigns in SONA while T-Bag, Bellick and Sucre go missing. Lincoln and L.J. continue to stay with Sofia.

Michael, Lincoln and the others get a new team member, Roland, and work to copy the data card. Wyatt continues his quest to find the brothers. T-Bag makes his way north.

Michael attempts to track the cardholder and avoid going back to prison. Wyatt finds new information regarding Sara's whereabouts. T-Bag uses a new identity to make a new life for himself.

Michael and the others track another cardholder to a consulate. T-Bag arrives in LA and runs into Michael and Lincoln. Wyatt also makes it to LA, in an effort to locate Sara. Bruce's body is discovered.

Self locates another card, hidden in a safe within a secure federal building. Mahone continues his quest for revenge. T-Bag's new life may be in jeopardy.

The entire operation may be in jeopardy when Mahone gets into trouble with the law. Gretchen's sister receives a surprise visitor. The Company may be onto Self. T-Bag continues to raise suspicions at Gate.

Lincoln, Sara, Sucre and Roland travel to Las Vegas in order to retrieve the next card. Gretchen recruits T-Bag. Wyatt has plans for Self.

Lincoln works to retrieve the final card, which is being held by the General. Michael and Self are forced to work with Gretchen. Meanwhile, Roland continues to be berated for losing the transcribing device in Las Vegas.

Michael, Lincoln, Sucre and Bellick tunnel into the Company's headquarters. Gretchen meets with Pad Man. Michael's condition continues to deteriorate. The police question T-Bag regarding Andy's disappearance. Wyatt propositions Sara while Mahone awaits his shot at his son's killer.

Gretchen gives Michael the rest of the bird book, but he suffers another seizure after deciphering it, so the others must carry out his two-pronged plan: one leading back to the basement, the other to an architect named David Allen Baker (Keith Szarabajka). Meanwhile, Pad Man goes forward with his plan to move Scylla, and Self is told by an influential senator that the deal Homeland Security made with the gang is "off the table."

While Gretchen focuses on getting the sixth card and Lisa Tabak finalizes plans to move Scylla, the gang penetrates the room where Scylla is still located. But that's only half the battle. Meanwhile, Michael reluctantly agrees to see a specialist; and T-Bag's boss at GATE makes him a tempting offer."
