Thou Shall Not Crave Thy Neighbour

Based on the Sookie Stackhouse book series by Charlaine Harris, True Blood is broadcast on the premium cable network HBO in the US. True Blood details the co-existence of vampires and humans in Bon Temps, a fictional small Louisiana town. The series centers on Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), a telepathic waitress at a diner, who falls in love with vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer). Series creator Alan Ball had previously worked with premium cable channel HBO on Six Feet Under, which ran for five seasons. Here is what he has to say about the plot of the series:

"Vampires are a great metaphor for minority groups that struggle for rights and recognition, but also for Republicans, in that they're vicious and bloodthirsty and will destroy anything that gets in their way." Ball noted that, "It's more popcorn TV than Six Feet Under. It's very raucous, more entertaining, much, much funnier. I'm done peering into the abyss for a while." (read more)

True Blood Trailer (HBO)

This is based on the Southern Vampire book series by Charlaine Harris, which came before Twilight ("Dead until Dark" released 2001). You could claim that Twilight was ripping off this series more than the other way around, but I don't think that's true either. I love both series, and there are some superficial simlarities, but they are mostly very different - as different as vampire stories can get, at least.

Season 1 Episode Guide

S01E01 Strange Love
Two years after vampires have "come out of the coffin", 175-year-old Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) walks into Merlotte's Bar in Bon Temps, Louisiana and changes the life of telepathic barmaid Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) forever. Meanwhile, Sookie's friend Tara (Rutina Wesley) comes to work at Merlotte's while Sookie's tomcatting brother Jason (Ryan Kwanten) finds himself on the wrong side of the law.
S01E02 The First Taste
After saving Sookie from the Rattray's revenge, Bill uses his vampire blood to heal Sookie and it leaves her with some strange side effects. In return, Sookie invites him to her house for a get-to-know-you gathering with Jason and Gran (Lois Smith). Jason is released from custody, having only been a person of interest. He continues his amorous ways with Dawn, discovering her to also have had encounters with a vampire.
S01E03 Mine
Bill lays claim to Sookie in order to protect her from a cadre of his vampire friends. At Merlotte's, Sam (Sam Trammell) and Tara seek refuge from their respective problems and Jason asks Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis) for help.
S01E04 Escape from Dragon House
When another Bon Temps resident is murdered under suspicious circumstances, Jason is once again taken into custody and it is up to Sookie to uncover the identity of the real killer and clear her brother's name. Bill takes Sookie to the vampire bar Fangtasia, where she is introduced to Eric (Alexander Skarsgård), a thousand-year-old Viking vampire and Bill's superior.
S01E05 Sparks Fly Out
Spurned by an exasperated Sookie, Bill ends up winning over Adele's church audience with his vivid recollections from the Civil War, though Andy and Bud remain suspicious. Sam tries to make the most of his opportunity with Sookie, though she's clearly not ready to commit. Ignoring Tara's rebuff, Lafayette convinces Jason to give vampire blood, aka "V juice," another shot.
S01E06 Cold Ground
Numbed by tragedy, Sookie looks for refuge from the cacophony of her friends' and neighbors' inner voices. After lashing out at his sister and decking Andy, Jason wrestles with withdrawal symptoms from his V juice habit. Tara resists the overtures of her mother Lettie Mae, who's trying to rid herself of a demon and needs her daughter's help. Sam and Tara make a connection in their mutual search for "something real."
S01E07 Burning House of Love
Sookie's painful childhood revelation about her Uncle Bartlett spurs Bill into action. Despite her skepticism, Tara agrees to pay for an exorcism to purge Lettie Mae of a demon. In search of V juice, Jason travels to Fangtasia, where he bonds with an adventurous young woman named Amy. A trio of rednecks decide to exact vigilante justice on a pack of vampires who crashed Merlotte's in search of their wayward mate Bill.
S01E08 The Fourth Man in the Fire
Sookie tries to hold herself together in the wake of another possible tragedy. Tara is amazed by Lettie Mae's turnaround, and considers similar therapy for herself after lashing out at Sookie and Sam. Jason's new squeeze Amy charms the crowd at Merlotte's, but shows a darker side to Jason when their V juice well runs dry.

HBO's 'True Blood': What did you think?

As a huge fan of Six Feet Under, there was no way I was going to miss creator Alan Ball's return to TV (and specifically, HBO) with last night's premiere of True Blood. And that "God Hates Fangs" billboard in the opening credits gave me hope that the show might be able to mix a little of that patented SFU-style humor into the vampires-among-us plotline. The pilot episode did a decent job of holding my attention - and I'll definitely tune in again next week to see if the show improves beyond the intermittent biting laughs and is able to go for the dramatic jugular so to speak.

What did you all think of the True Blood premiere? Will you be back for a second helping?

Poll: Who is the Hottest Vampire ever?!?

I though that Angel and Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer were the hottest vamps out there. Well Bill Compton from True Blood blows them both out of the water. Does any one else agree??? lol There's just something about a set of fangs and an insatiable appetite for man's most vital fluid that ratchets up the sexy.

HBO's "True Blood," my favorite new show this fall (so far), continues to rock my Sunday night. Sure, it's a little trashy. But where else are you going to find vampires, a murder mystery and people who are probably having more fun than anyone else on TV? Nowhere.
