Staying Hydrated with a Water Backpack
Here's some tips on choosing the best water backpack for your needs and using it to stay hydrated.
Water Backpack and Cycling
for those balance challenged foks
I recently started cycling again and find it is very difficult for me to reach down, pull the water bottle out of the holder on my bike frame, tip my head back to get a drink ~ all without falling off my bike.I decided to pick up a water backpack for just this reason. I'm working on increasing the length and miles of my rides and I know it's really important to stay hydrated, I just couldn't get enough water in using my water bottle.
Don't feel bad if you're a beginning cyclist and can't quite get the hang of your water bottle yet, a water backpack will allow you to hydrate without taking your eyes off the road, or your hands off your handlebars!

Which do you prefer?
There are plenty of ways to stay hydrated, it really comes down to personal preference. However I think we can all agree that staying hydrated is paramount to a good workout and staying healthy while exercising.
Choosing Your Water Backpack

New Camelbak MULE 100 Oz Hydration Pack

You can get a cheap water backpack at some place like walmart ~ in fact that's what I picked up to begin with. Bell makes a nice water backpack for only $20. While I haven't had any trouble with mine thus far, I've seen a lot of reivewers comment on the fact they began leaking quite soon after they were purchased.
The other choice is the Camelbak ~ this is a higher end water backpack that is much more durable and a more quality product. It costs a little more but you can actually get them at a pretty reasonable price ~ considering you may have to go buy 2 of the Bell's you might as well spend the money once and the get Camelbak. The camelbak water backpack range anywhere from the mid $30 range up to the $80 range.
There are also a couple of other brands that are built more like the camelbak, but are a little cheaper ~ I haven't been able to find them in person though ~ only online.
So if you need your water backpack "right now" I'd say go ahead and get the Bell. If you can wait or afford to spend a little more go ahead and grab the Camelbak. Most good bike stores will sell the camelbak but you may find you are paying more than you would normally if you bought it at Amazon or somewhere similar.
