Novel Discovery: Water On The Moon! 2009
Ranked #17,547 in Culture & Society, #352,243 overall
It's Significant! NASA finds roughly about 25 gallons of water on the moon!
NASA has declared that a spacecraft traveling at a speed of around 5,600 miles (9,000 kilometers) per hour which deliberately crashed into the moon has awakened a novel discovery - water! NASA's Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite probe discovered beds of water ice located in a permanently shadowed crater at the lunar south pole when it impacted the moon last month. Moon mining?
But is it really true?
Water on the moon?
Suspicions and evidence...
where did the water on the moon come from?
The LCROSS probe impacted the lunar south pole at a crater called Cabeus on Oct. 9 in an attempt to create a debris plume that could be investigated by scientists for evidences of water ice.
The findings of Apollo astronauts 40 odd years ago after their return from the moon gave rise to evidence of water on the moon when the lunar rock samples they brought back with them were analyzed for traces of water bound to minerals present in the rocks. The findings were insignificant as the containers which they had brought back the lunar rocks in had leaked. They formed the assumption that the small signs of distinguishable water could be contamination from Earth.
Anthony Colaprete, project scientist and principal investigator from NASA's Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, California for the 79-million-dollar LCROSS mission said: "Yes indeed we found water and we did not find only a little bit but a significant amount,"

It's Now Official!
(Water has already been detected on the moon by a NASA-built instrument on board India's now defunct Chandrayaan-1 probe and other spacecraft, though it was in very small amounts and bound to the dirt and dust of the lunar surface) one month ago.
A major breakthrough now what?
Where do we go from here? More questions raised!
NASA's well intended plans to send astronauts back on the moon by 2020 in order to establish operational bases for further exploration to Mars under the Constellation project augments doubt. Their budget is presently insufficient to pay for Constellation's Orion capsule, a more advanced and spacios version of the Apollo lunar module, as well as the Ares 1 and Ares V launchers needed to put the craft in orbit. President Barack Obama has stated that existing budgets are not large enough to fund a return mission before 2020

It's just water. I don't see what the big deal is.I guess I'll get excited when they find life on another planet.
science_fiction_novels_cyberpunk, at 4am on November 15, 2009 predicts:
Water on the moon is a good start. It will be easier to build a lunar outpost dedicated to research and mining (helium 3?). The lunar experience will be important for the following jump to Mars. And it will be the beginning of asteroid mining, which will be fundament in building larger and larger space stations (made by automatic and even intelligent machines).
wilddove6, at 8pm on November 14, 2009 predicts:
That some large corporation will find a way to take advantage of what could have been a lasting legacy for us all...and they'll sell it off in bits and pieces.
