Artwork by Jan Porterfield

Jan stopped working in 2001 after being diagnosed with colorectal cancer. She used her time between treatments to develop her artistic skills. Jan's artwork continues to brighten lives throughout the country.

Jan focused on the many positive things in her life -- friends, family, working with young children. She created a charitable fund at the Alaska Community Foundation and profits from the Jan Porterfield Watercolors CafePress shop are donated directly to that fund. This money is used to promote Jan's charitable interests. So far, gifts have been made to Hospice of Anchorage and the Anchorage Association for the Education of Young Children.

Who is Jan Porterfield

Jan became a popular local artist with several solo shows and paintings accepted into jurored watercolor exhibits

Jan Porterfield Watercolor Art Prints

Jan focused mostly on flowers, and particularly liked exploring the different shapes behind the flowers and the leaves. She used lots of deep, vibrant colors instead of the more traditional watercolor shades. Jan also had a more whimsical side, expressed by paintings like the Giraffe painting and her Circus Chicken series. I hope to add more of those to this site in the future.

What is watercolor art?

Watercolor is a painting method

Watercolor PaintingWatercolor is a painting method. A watercolor is the medium or the resulting artwork, in which the paints are made of pigments suspended in a water soluble vehicle. The traditional and most common support for watercolor paintings is paper; other supports include papyrus, bark papers, plastics, vellum or leather, fabric, wood, and canvas. In East Asia, watercolor painting with inks is referred to as brush painting or scroll painting. In Chinese and Japanese painting it has been the dominant medium, often in monochrome black or browns. India, Ethiopia and other countries also have long traditions. Finger painting with watercolor paints originated in China.

Turning Pictures Into Art

Artists can see the world a little differently than some of us more literal types. Jan would often paint from photographs she took, but would add her own unique perspective. She was not constrained to paint things as they were; she often painted what she saw as the essence of the subject. At other times, the paint would take on a life of its own and drive her art in a particular direction. That is something that happens quite often with watercolor. Here you see three photographs along with the painting that resulted from those pictures.

Quality art prints of Jan's work can be found on the imagekind.com web site. Watercolor reproductions on mugs, clocks, magnets, note cards, and more can be found at Jan Porterfield Watercolors. Postage stamps and other gift items can be found at Zazzle.com. You can customize the inside message of your own greeting cards at Greeting Card Universe.

History of Watercolor Painting

Watercolor painting got its start between 1471 and 1528

Although watercolor painting is extremely old, dating perhaps to the cave paintings of paleolithic Europe, and has been used for manuscript illumination since at least Egyptian times but especially in the European Middle Ages, its continuous history as an art medium begins in the Renaissance.Jan Porterfield - Water Color Artist Fine Art Prints The German artist Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) who painted several fine botanical, wildlife and landscape watercolors, is generally considered among the earliest exponents of the medium. An important school of watercolor painting in Germany was led by Hans Bol (1534-1593) as part of the Dürer Renaissance.
Despite this early start, watercolors were generally used by Baroque easel painters only for sketches, copies or cartoons (small scale design drawings). Among notable early practitioners of watercolor painting were Van Dyck (during his stay in England), Claude Lorrain, Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, and many Dutch and Flemish artists. However, botanical and wildlife illustrations are perhaps the oldest and most important tradition in watercolor painting. Botanical illustrations became popular in the Renaissance, both as hand tinted woodblock illustrations in books or broadsheets and as tinted ink drawings on vellum or paper. Botanical artists have always been among the most exacting and accomplished watercolor painters, and even today watercolors -- with their unique ability to summarize, clarify and idealize in full color -- are used to illustrate scientific and museum publications. Wildlife illustration reached its peak in the 19th century with artists such as John James Audubon, and today many naturalist field guides are still illustrated with watercolor paintings.
