Knowing Your Water Filters: How a Water Filter Can Make Water Safe to Use and Drink

Back in Ancient Egypt, state scientists and engineers made sure that the water that their countrymen used was free from debris and impurities. Among their methods of making the water fit for drinking was sieving, where they passed the water through a fine mesh, so that the mesh caught the unwanted components in the water. This technique, though rather unwieldy, marked the beginning of water filtration or "water filters".

Water filtration as we know it today, however, began early in the nineteenth century, where a Scotsman named John Gibb constructed a slow sand filter, which ensured that water was filtered free of undesirable, even dangerous components by passing the water through a series of layers made up of different minerals. The use of slow sand water filtering spread throughout the world, and more advances were made that finally turned the filtration method into the one we know today.

Today's water filters serve to render water cleaner, and can act in three different ways. A water filter can be a physical barrier to debris and other undesirable water components, and, like a sieve, can keep the unwanted components out.

A water filter can also impose chemical processes upon the water so that minerals and other compounds are precipitated out and easily removed. A water filter can also use biological processes, such as the ability of certain bacteria to remove contaminants from water, and allow such bacteria to grow on their surfaces and filter the water free of contaminants.

Water filters are used to render water suitable for agricultural irrigation, which demands high quality water for good plant growth. If certain minerals such as zinc or mercury are present in water used for irrigation, plants may die, and millions of dollars may be lost due to failed harvests.

Aquariums also have their own water filters, and employ colonies of beneficial bacteria to keep the pH level and salinity of the tank at levels fit to sustain fish and other underwater life. Water filters are also used in swimming pools, and operate at all hours of the day to continually cleanse the pool water free from the contaminants swimmers can bring in. Drinking water is subjected to rigorous water filtration techniques, all of which form part of a complex scheme involving reverse osmosis techniques, ultraviolet light radiation, and chemical treatment, among others.

Water filtration is highly important to maintaining human health. As our bodies are made up of over two-thirds water, we need to replenish our system stocks daily, or we run the risk of fatigue, sickness, or even death. As a result, scientists and engineers have devised ways for people to filter their water without having to go to a laboratory or water treatment facility, or spending millions of dollars on industrial filters. Small, portable water filters are now out on the market, and can be bought at your local department store. Such filters consist of various layers of minerals, and can be attached to your faucet, so that the tap water can be filtered immediately.

Portable water filters are also useful to international aid workers, who need to purify water in parts of the world where drinking water is scarce. Such water filters have also been used by the military, especially during campaigns in deserts; and by recreational hikers, who can drink water from streams and rivers in isolated mountains without worrying about the safety of the water. These water filters are operated by a hand pump, and will weigh less than a few pounds. To use such a filter, dirty water is fed into a silicon tube, where it passes through several filters before being directed onto a water bottle. Although seemingly primitive, such filters promise to remove microorganisms, such as protozoa, protozoan cysts, and bacteria.

Although water filters can be very useful, they are not sufficient to ensure water safety. Scientists and engineers may sometimes employ water tablets, which can kill dangerous viruses. Distillation can also purify water further, and can be used in tandem with water filtration. If you are interested in purchasing a water filter, then do as much research as you can on the various types of water filter available for your needs. Do not settle for filtered water alone: as mentioned earlier, filtration is only part of many steps that can ensure the cleanest, safest water for you.

I just ordered a Vortex Water Jug. When I get it and use I will write more about it. Right now let me say that all water anywhere on our planet is always moving, water is alive! It twists and turns and creates vortexs and spins everywhere.

So we need to filter our water for sure, and not through a filter takes everything out of it, unless you are putting back the minerals with celtic sea salt. But, this is not the best way. It is good to use an aquasana filter which does leave in the good minerals, but even that water is actually folks.

What to do? Well, I think I discovered what to do. They don't sell these in the USA. I don't want to say much more until I get mine and use it.
