Waterproof MP3 Player

Before you make your choice, there are a couple of things to think about aside from the price.

Operating Depth
If you merely want a waterproof MP3 player to enjoy while splashing around in the water, the depth at which it will operate only needs to be a few feet. If you'll be diving however, much greater depth would be needed. For those who will use their player while swimming laps, 6-10 feet should be sufficient.

Sound Quality
Sound quality can be compromised due to a poor seal with the ear buds or low quality earbuds. It's best to test devices by listening to them first before buying. The players that make use of bone conduction have received positive reviews, but users need to wear earplugs to get good performance even with these devices.

Compatibility
Clearly, you want to be sure that any MP3 player you purchase will be compatible with your computer operating system to assure you can easily download music to the device.

Comfort and Fit
If you'll be wearing your MP3 player for surfing, kayaking, and similar sports, then you'll probably want an armband model so that it stays secure and is easy to operate. For swimming laps an armband won't work. You'll want something to attach securely, either on your goggles or clothing most often. When you're active you also want to be sure you can easily operate the device and that the earbuds will stay in place. Fit should be checked!

Controls
Be sure the model you choose will offer the controls you need and that you can easily operate them while in the water. Some allow you to shuffle tunes, others don't. Some will fast forward through a song, others won't.

Sometimes a waterproof case, either with or without speakers might be a good choice.

If you merely want a waterproof MP3 player for use in the shower or while you're out in the pool with friends, then perhaps a waterproof case, with speakers, would be a more economical option. These devices can be used when you don't need to keep the music all to yourself.

In other instances, a waterproof MP3 player case, without speakers is the way to go. However, even these are often a bit too bulky for active sports but are good for going to the beach or the pool in general. Of course waterproof earbuds are also needed with these.

Another option we've seen recently, although have not actually used, is a product found at Swimman.com which indicates they can waterproof an iPod Shuffle without adding the bulk of a case. It's all done internally.
