Until we get anti-gravity, this will have to do.

When I first saw this board, I didn't believe it could be rideable. Only two wheels instead of four, and they're on swivels. And the board is split in the middle, and pivots around a rod? I rounded up the owner, my 7-year old nephew Taigen. "Show me." I demanded. When he did, it was like I was watching a magic trick.

So I studied it awhile, and took one ride while supported by a helpful shoulder. Then I kicked off by myself. As soon as you pivot once, and feel the board actually propelling you, you "get it." I was hooked.

Never have I seen a recreational toy where the disparity between perceived and actual difficulty was so great. If you kick off hoping for the reassuring support of four wheels, you're not going to make it. If, however, you kick off, and believe you're surfing/snowboarding/whatever, you will do fine. It's faith-based boarding! It's all about active balance.

I showed it to a friend. When he saw the swiveling casters, he said, "That's death-on-wheels!" I give him the prep-talk ("balance") Three kicks later, he's going around the parking lot.

The smoother the movements (swivel those hips!) the better. It's like riding a wave a couple of inches off the concrete.

Wave Board demo (parody)

With music by fort minor - remember the name. Street Surfing. THIS IS A PARODY OF THE DVD THAT COMES WITH THE WAVE BOARD. I can't believe only one dude figured it out. We had just bought the wave board and watched the dvd thinking it would help us learn how to ride. Instead we got a good laugh, as I'm sure a lot of people got as well. Obviously, we are trying to be funny. We didn't even attempt to do any crazy tricks, so stop commenting saying you could do better. Also if you don't have any videos of your own stfu, you can't critize if you don't have any vids yourself.

Stowboard

The Stowboard is a board, about as long as a regular skateboard, that folds up into a little block that you can shove into your backpack, or anywhere. It rides extremely smoothly, steers well, and has what seems to be the perfect balance of flex and strength so that it has some give, but still works. The only drawback is that it's not a skateboard! It's perfect for cruising around town, campus, whatever, but the way you have to stand to ride it sets the Stowboard in it's own category.

I've been very happy with my Nuvi. My wife named it Dora. Directions have been accurate and easy to follow. Screen, although small compared to built-in models is bright and very readable. It doesn't always offer the route I would (nor does my wife), but it is always reasonable. If you choose an alternate (or wrong) turn it quickly recalculates and takes it from there. It's been fun to follow Dora's route to someplace familar just to see new streets. Smart address entry saves time, but find by name function takes too long. Location database (dining, gas, etc) seems pretty complete and up to date. Find nearby function is fast and fun.

Radica's 20Q is among the most amazing and enjoyable gadgets I've come across in quite a while. A handheld version of the website 20q.net (try q.20q.net if you have trouble getting online), this little doodad will ask you 20 questions to narrow down what you're thinking of (if its first guess is wrong it will ask another five questions and take a final stab at it). You can answer yes, no, sometimes, or unknown, and it pays to go with your first reaction to the question (Can it be used for recreation? No ... well I guess somebody could, but not usually and they really oughtn't ... so is that sometimes or unknown? Hmmmm). Its success rate is astounding. It's not hard to baffle it if you pick something totally obscure, but I've found it's more fun to lose to the machine than to win. Among the disparate things it's beat me on are: birthday cake, pirate, badger, oven, buffalo, carrot, fan, lion, key and flashlight.
