Start a Blog or Website
Your first step should be to start a blog or website. You want to do this for several reasons.

* Helps you practice your writing skills.
* Gives you a place to showcase your work.
* Attracts potential clients.
* Make additional income through advertising, such as with Google Adsense.

A blog is the easiest because there are a lot of free blog platforms out there. My favorite by far is blogger because they give you more control in terms of what kinds of ads you can post on them.

However, you can also have your a blog or website on your own domain if you are willing to pay the fees.

Find a Niche to Write About
You can either specialize (find a niche) or write about any topic that strikes your fancy. There are pros and cons to both. It depends on your personality.

If you are a good at something and are looking to break in to the writing biz, turning that into your first niche could help you get going.

Finding a niche is a great way to get started, especially if you have a specialty. It will be easier to get an assignment if the client or the magazine perceives you as an expert.

Since I am an herbalist, my first writing assignments were in that subject. That was my niche. From there, I first built my business until I got more experience.

Here are some tips:

Make a List -- Make a list of all the things you're good at. Can you picture yourself writing about them?

Start a blog or niche website -- Once you have a niche to focus on, start a blog or website. You can use one of the free blog platforms. This is your chance to build an audience and a fan base for your topic.

Write articles on your niche -- You can write articles on your niche and do several things with them. You can post them on your blog or website, get them published at some of the paces I've mentioned in this lens, like Associated Content, or submit them to a Ezinearticles.com to help drive traffic to your blog.

After you get some experience writing about your topic, you can start to pitch magazines and newspapers with topic - related ideas.
Sign Up For Paypal
You'll need to sign up for PayPal if you are going to use some of these websites.

Associated Content and PayPerPost both pay to your PayPal account. It just makes things easier.

You don't always need Paypal. There's a way around it, but often you need to pay a fee for the sites to cut a check. For me, this is an easy way to keep track of my books, too.
I Make Residual Income at Helium

There are a few reasons why I write at Helium

I simply love making residual income for my writing.

The articles are fun to write because they can be short. Think of them as a cross between a forum post and an article.

They also have a wonderful profile function and you can add links to your blogs and websites.

My goal is to write about fifty helium articles a month. That way, I can reach the payout each month.
I Find Clients on Rentacoder ....

Rentacoder is my favorite freelance job board. I like it because you don't need to pay a membership fee. They do take a commission, but I've learned how to bid to compensate for that.

You need to sign up, verify your account, set up your profile, and bid for jobs. It took me about two months of getting things set up and bidding on at least 1 project a day before I landed my first assignment. Once I did, it snowballed. You just need to be patient.

I Make Money Writing for Magazines
Another way I supplement my writing income is to write for magazines. The first magazine that ever paid me was the Dollar Stretcher. I got $50 for a $500 word article.

A resource I recommend is the Writers Market. You can buy the print version, sign up online, or do both. But, you can get by without it.

Check out Writers Weekly. They have a newsletter with markets and also a database. You can search the database for markets that are open to new writers.
