Consistency is the golden rule if you are trying to change a certain behavior in your pooch. You are going to have to make it clear to Rover what behavior is and is not acceptable.

Let's say that your dog loves to dig. Once you have ascertained the reason for this behavior, then you are going to have to come up with a solution for your dog to stop digging holes all over the backyard. Here you will find some proven techniques that will help to control that digging problem that you dog has.

* Make sure you are giving your dog plenty of exercise as well as lots of physical and mental stimulation. Your dog is one bundle of energy so you want to channel it into something positive.

* If your dog happens to be digging a hole so that he can bury a bone, then do not give him a bone! Instead give Fido a chewing toy such as a rawhide bone.

* When you are not able to supervise you dog, confine him. Either place him in a kennel run, a crate or indoors if you are not there to spy on him. This must be done as long as your dog has the digging problem.

Here is a unique solution to stop your puppy from digging.

* Blow up some balloons and then bury them wherever your dog love to dig. When Rover strikes a balloon, the popping sound will startle your dog. This just may be the trick to stop your dog from doing any more digging.

* Try staying around your pooch for a couple of days. This method may be successful. If your dog begins digging while you are there, reprimand him and then spray your puppy with a hose. You must do this every time your dog starts to dig a hole. Remember that consistency breeds success.

* If your dog likes to dig in one favorite spot, you can purchase some chicken wire and bury it just below the surface of this spot. When your pup starts digging, he will not like the feeling that his paws make as they scrape along the wire.

* This method sounds rather gross but it is very effective and popular in trying to get your dog to stop digging. Along with the dirt, add some of his poop (feces) to the dirt and then fill up the hole. Most dogs are quite put off with this approach and will not attempt o dig again. Some dog trainers recommend that your feed your dog pineapple before you perform this technique. When you mix the pineapple with the poop the smell is apparently terrible.

* Some dogs simply copy what their owners are doing. If you happen to be working in the garden, you dog may get the same idea! In that case, you will have to confine your dog while you work in the garden. This may be another way for your dog to get attention in a negative manner.

* If you have plenty of room in your yard, one great solution for both you and your pooch is for him to have his own digging area. You will be able to encourage your dog to confine his digging to this one designated spot. Fill this area with some nice soft sand and then bury some of your puppies favorite treats in this area. Most dogs will realize that they will have to go to their dog digging box in order to dig.

* If your dog happens to be digging under your fence then you may want to fill in the holes in as well as under the fence. When you block these outside distractions, you will be taking away any visual temptation that your dog wants to get at.

* If nothing has worked for you, then take a trip to you local pet shop. There you will find a host of commercial products that may help your dog from digging.

* Here are a couple of methods we have not touched upon. When you have to leave your house you may want to give your pet some tasty chew toys. You also may want to think about employing a dog walker.

Good luck in trying to stop your dog from digging. If your pooch trusts and respects you, he will want to do all he can to please you in every situation.
