Ways to Increase Gas Mileage
With gas prices over 3 dollars and growing fast, gas mileage is becoming a huge issue. Just driving to work eats away an hour's worth of work for some of us. Fortunately, there are ways to increase gas mileage.
Gas Mileage Tips
Here are some easy ways to increase gas mileage:- Avoid using AC-Turning on the air conditioning makes the engine work a little harder and hurts your gas mileage
- Avoid open windows at high speed-Opening windows creates drag on your car, hurting gas mileage. If you have to choose between air condition or rolling down your windows at 45MPH or higher, use the AC. Surprisingly, open windows are worse than AC. Windows are ok to use in slow speeds.
- Get rid of weight-Take out extra things in your car you don't need. The more weight your car is moving, the harder it has to work.
- Avoid city traffic-If you can take a route that is slightly longer, but avoids a lot of stop and go traffic, you'll likely get better gas mileage. Acceleration is what sucks up gas.
- Avoid heavy acceleration-As much fun as it is to take off like lightning, it's terrible on your gas mileage.
- Properly inflate your tires-Tires that aren't properly inflated can kill your gas mileage. This is probably the most common cause of poor gas mileage.
- Use overdrive-If you're driving an automatic, there's no reason to use drive instead of overdrive in nearly all cases. Overdrive will get you greatly increased gas mileage.
- Keep up on basic maintenance-Basic car maintenance such as changing air filters and oil are easy ways to increase gas mileage.
- Slow down-Going 55 or 60 instead of 75 can increase gas mileage tons. If you aren't in a hurry, spend a few more minutes driving and save gas.
