It was the earliest wide spread movie to have running zombies. It had an intense beginning, and took care of the anatomy problems for zombies by allowing heart shots to kill. While not technically zombies, it was a solid and interesting film that was worth the watch.

28 Days Later was an excellent horror film that was made independently on a small budget. This movie brought up the idea of fast zombies or running zombies (even though technically these aren't zombies, but primally violent infected people).
This led to an okay sequel, but one with a much different feel. This movie is dark, has some great acting, and really makes a solid film all the way through. Definitely worth the see.
This can also qualify, in a micro sort of way, as a post apocalyptic movie, even though it's not a "true" apocalypse, the movie has the same dystopian feel.
