Sunflowers

Rick is a bit of a macho man, a man's man, but he admits that he loves sunflowers. We manage to plant a few in the backyard and try to plant different varieties. We'd like to plant more but the location of our house and yard we get really high winds here off the North Channel, so most have to be along the one fence or hidden in the backyard.  Anywhere else they would have to be staked, ya, like I have time for that! LOL

Did you know that sunflowers date back to ancient times? Carbon dating of seeds found in North American clay date back nearly 3,000 years.

Did you ever wonder how sunflowers got their scientific name Helianthus? It comes from two words, Helios meaning sun, and Anthos, meaning flower. The sunflower often follows the sun and this characteristic is how got its name.

Picture below are Italian White, Red Sun, Velvet Queen, Giganteus, Indian Blanket, Giant Double Sungold, Autumn Beauty, Valentine, Mexican Sunflower (Tithonia) and Moonwalker Seeds

About Sunflowers

While the vibrant, strong sunflower is a recognized worldwide for its beauty, it is also an important source of food. Sunflower oil is a valued and healthy vegetable oil and sunflower seeds are enjoyed as a healthy, tasty snack and nutritious ingredient to many foods.

Just a few different uses of sunflowers are:

  • in all kinds of foods - breads, butters, garnishes in salads
  • as a snack - roasted sunflower seeds
  • for cooking - sunflower oil
  • bird seed
  • livestock feed
  • ornamental flowers
Sunflower is an important agricultural crop choice for US producers in the northern plains of the Dakotas to the panhandle of Texas.

Fun Fact About Sunflowers

  • There are 67 species of sunflowers, growing in the USA, Europe, Japan, and Russia
  • Sunflowers are a great choice for planting to attract birds to your yard
  • Sunflowers are one of the fastest growing plants. They can grow 8 to 12 feet tall in rich soil within six months.
  • It require only 90 to 100 days from planting to maturity
  • Russian Czar Peter the Great (1672-1725) liked sunflowers so much that when he saw them in Holland, he took seeds back to Russia. By the 1700s, sunflower seeds were being eaten all over Russia.
  • The former Soviet Union grows the most sunflowers. The sunflower is the national flower of Russia.
  • The sunflower is native to North America and was used by the Indians for food and oil. Some farmers use it to feed their livestock.
  • The sunflower is most at home in Kansas, The Sunflower State
  • We use sunflower seeds to make oil, bird seed and for snacking. They have lots of calcium and 11 other important minerals. They do have 50% fat, BUT it is mostly polyunsaturated linoleic acid.
  • Sunflower stems were used to fill lifejackets before the advent of modern materials
  • Wild sunflower is highly branched with small heads and small seeds, in contrast to the single-stem and large seed head of domesticated sunflower.
  • Sunflower heads consist of 1,000 to 2,000 individual flowers joined together by a receptacle base. The large petals around the edge of a sunflower head are individual ray flowers which do not develop into seed.
  • A well-known sunflower characteristic is that the flowering heads track the sun's movement, a phenomenon known as heliotropism.
  • The daily orientation of the flower to the sun is a direct result of differential growth of the stem. A plant-growth regulator, or auxin, accumulates on the shaded side of a plant when conditions of unequal light prevail. Because of this accumulation, the darker side grows faster than the sunlit side. Thus, the stem bends toward the sun.
  • Sunflower seeds are rich in oil, which they store as a source of energy and food. Sunflower seeds are crushed to give us oil. We can use sunflower oil for cooking.
  • In Peru, the Aztecs worshiped sunflowers. They placed sunflower images made of gold in their temples, and crowned princesses in the bright yellow flowers.
  • In many parts of Europe, sunflowers provide leaves for smoking, flower buds for salads, flowers for dyes and oil for cooking

How to Roast In-Shell Sunflower Seeds

Cover unshelled seeds with salted water, using 1/4 to 1/2 cup of salt per two quarts of water.

Soak seeds in the salt solution overnight. Drain off the water the next morning and pat the seeds dry to remove excess moisture. (You can also roast the seeds unsalted, by simply skipping the soaking process).

Preheat the oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit.

Spread the sunflower seeds evenly on a cookie sheet or shallow pan and bake for 30 to 40 minutes or until golden brown, stirring occasionally.

The seeds will often develop a small crack down the center as they roast.

Test after each stirring to see if the seeds are completely roasted by tasting.

After roasting, remove seeds from the oven and allow them to cool completely.

Then store the seeds in an airtight container for future snacking.

Variations call for mixing a teaspoon of melted butter with a cup of seeds while they are still warm from the oven; these are for immediate eating. Some also experiment with different seasonings, such as barbecue, Cajun, and taco.

Sunflowers

Sunflowers is a series of still life oil paintings that the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh painted. Among the Sunflowers paintings are three similar paintings with fifteen sunflowers in a vase, and two similar paintings with twelve sunflowers in a vase.

Van Gogh painted the first Vase with Twelve Sunflowers, which is now in the Neue Pinakothek Museum in Munich, Germany, and the first Vase with Fifteen Sunflowers, which is now in National Gallery, London, England, in August 1888 when he was living in Arles southern France. The later similar paintings were painted in January the following year.

The paintings are all painted on about 93 × 72 cm (37" × 28") canvases. An earlier series of four still life using sunflowers were painted in Paris in 1887.

I was married in Siena, Italy where sunflowers are the official flower of the region. If it hadn't been for a squirrel who dropped a seed in my garden I wouldn't have had any this year. They're so much fun to grow, especially the giant ones. Great lens!
