The Harder They Come

The Harder They Come has become a cult classic.  The Jamaican movie was released 30 years ago and stars Jimmy Cliff.  The movie set the standard for what reggae music is and what life is like in the ghetto of Trenchtown and in the reggae dancehalls of Kingston.

The Harder They Come is a story of a country man, Ivanhoe Martin, who leaves the mountains to come to the city to make it as a reggae superstar. He finds that life in the city is hard and finds himself being the pawn of both the local record producer and the marijuana boss he works for later when his finances get tough.

The Harder They Come was Jamaica's first feature film and helped to make reggae music popular in the U.S.

The Harder They Come Stats

Jimmy Cliff Biography

Jimmy Cliff OM (born James Chambers, 1 April 1948, Somerton District, St. James, Jamaica) is a Jamaican ska and reggae musician, best known among mainstream audiences for songs such as "Sittin' in Limbo", "You Can Get It If You Really Want It", "Many Rivers to Cross" from soundtrack to The Harder They Come which helped popularize reggae across the world, Larkin, Colin: "The Virgin Encyclopedia of Reggae", 1998, Virgin Books, ISBN 0-7535-0242-9 and for his cover of "I Can See Clearly Now" from the film, Cool Runnings. It's one of life's great ironies that today, outside of reggae circles, Cliff is better known for his film appearances than his music. Even after a string of hits, the singer never quite managed to break into the mainstream, although in the late 1960s and early 1970s, he seemed poised for international stardom.Allmusic.com biography
