Work for yourself over 40 or older

When I started my first job, back in the 1970s, a Job For Life was a reality. It was still possible to make a reasonable income from a conventional job in a career lasting forty years. Recently - not just over the past year - the whole world of jobs and unemployment has changed, especially for anyone aged over 40. This group is much more likely to be laid off and need to find a new career. All of us need to be looking to the future, even if we currently have a good source of income, learning new skills to prepare us for the future of work and business. I think this is actually a positive thing - twenty years ago there was really only one way for ordinary people to earn money, and that meant working for someone else. Part of that routine included travelling to your place of work every day, and being out of the house for up to twelve hours a day.

Thanks to the development of e-commerce and cheap Broadband connections, the unlikeliest people have found they can make money from home and the main area where they do this is by blogging. This is the way I chose to earn my living when I left my previous job. The lifestyle freedom is fantastic if your home business is successful.

Note
I am not selling anything here, so rest assured that there is no catch to reading the ideas I have compiled here for making money online from home. There are links to some of the companies you might want to visit to help in your online career, and of course there are some paid ads as well. But they should all be of use to you and I hope you will agree.

It costs almost nothing to start blogging: although you can get started for free, from experience I do not recommend the total no-cost route - f'ree blog sites for earning online - find out why.

Creating Your Own Website - Quick Start Guide

* How to get your own domain

The subscribers to my Home Internet Business Ezine are rightly wary of internet scams. I am wary of any opportunity that requires investing money upfront, and they feel the same way. I started my online business with one domain name ($8 per year), one month's Web Hosting at Hostgator ($10).

You can set up a website easily using free resources that are available at the click of a mouse. The only money you need to start your business is the price of a domain name and webhosting - have a look at this simple guide to starting a website or blog with no money (almost), based on my experience with hosting and registration deals.

Having your own domain name is the best idea. If you are aiming to get visitors from your own country, choose a domain that is country-based - for example .co.uk. One of my clients is a Hypnotherapist so she is obviously looking for local clients. Buy the .com domain as well, and point it to the main domain. You can do this easily in your control panel.

If you want to build a list of subscribers, you will need an auto responder ($10 per month). There are free autoresponders, but they offer a very basic service and it is time consuming to move your subscriber list when you later outgrow a free responder. My first blogs were hosted for free on Blogger, and I only ever buy an ebook or software if I can justifying the cost to myself and my partner. Even if an opportunity requires no cash investment, you could still waste a lot of time taking part if it turns out to be a scam, so it may not be recommended here - I will highlight the best opportunities for residual income, over the next weeks and months.

How I started blogging from home and making money

When I left my former career I looked at a lot of money making business ideas but most of them required a high cash investment, with no guarantee of making a profit. In other words I could pay £000s to buy a business and risk making a huge financial loss.

I wanted a way to work that gave me flexible working hours and a flexible location. At the end of 2005 I set up my first blogs, with no previous training at all. I knew nothing about creating websites, coding HTML: all I had was a library book where I would look up the next thing I wanted to do.

I took the 'free blogs' route using Blogger.com, but I do not recommend that and I have now moved all my important blogs to their own domains and paid web hosting. The reason is that a Blogger blog does not belong to its author: Google could take your successful blog down instantly if they think you have broken its rules, and you would lose your source of income with it. Read the arguments for buying your own domain name and web hosting.
