When I was a newbie affiliate marketer I would do what every other affiliate is doing and that is to find a product to sell and start sending traffic to the merchant page. By merchant page I mean, sending traffic to your affiliate link.

Needless, to say that this is the method with the lowest conversions rate and you are actually losing money if you use ppc.

Most affiliates who create a landing page are actually very desperate to sell and make their commissions. This desperation leads them to make a sales page which is very salesy and the visitor just leaves the site in disgust.

A landing page should try to answer the questions in the visitors mind and not try to sell him.
Now, how do you find out what is in your visitors mind - Good question!
Different visitors use different types of keywords and the keywords they use reveal the questions in their mind.
