Raising Awareness for Heart Disease in Women
National Wear Red Day is February 5, 2010. It is the day when men and women across the country show their support for women's heart disease awareness by wearing red. Heart Disease is the #1 killer of women in America. One in four women dies from heart disease. How much do you know about women and heart disease? What can YOU do?
The Red Dress is the symbol for National Red Day and the Go Red for Women movement. National Wear Red Day is your opportunity to join with millions to stand up to heart disease by wearing your favorite red dress, shirt, or tie, or Red Dress Pin.

Leading Causes of Death for American Women

One in four women dies from heart disease. It's the #1 killer of women, regardless of race or ethnicity. It also strikes at younger ages than most people think, and the risk rises in middle age. And, two-thirds of women who have heart attacks never fully recover.
The Heart Truth
The Heart Truth is that heart disease is the #1 killer of American women. In fact, one in four women dies of heart disease. But heart disease can also lead to disability and a significantly decreased quality of life.
Unfortunately, most women don't know The Heart Truth. Although significant progress has been made increasing awareness among women-from 34 percent in 2000 to 57 percent in 2006-most women fail to make the connection between risk factors and their personal risk of developing heart disease.
Uncontrollable Risk Factors Associated with Cardiovascular Disease in Women Include:
- Increasing Age - Over 83 percent of people who die of coronary heart disease are 65 or older. At older ages, women who have heart attacks are more likely than men are to die from them within a few weeks.
- Family History (heredity) - Children of parents with heart disease are more likely to develop it themselves.
- Race - African Americans have more severe high blood pressure than Caucasians and a higher risk of heart disease. Heart disease risk is also higher among Mexican Americans, American Indians, native Hawaiians and some Asian Americans. This is partly due to higher rates of obesity and diabetes.
