For Alzheimer's Disease and Terry Pratchett: Truth, Justice, Freedom, Reasonably Priced Love, and a Hard-Boiled Egg!
On May 25th, certain members of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch, and a few others around the city, wore a sprig of lilac.
The 25th of May was the day that they remembered those who fought and fell for hardboiled eggs, truth, justice and reasonably priced love, who died - and in Reg Shoe's case rose and kept fighting - in the Glorious Revolution of Treacle Mine Road.
Terry Pratchett made a donation of $1 million to the Alzheimer's Research Trust and has begun campaigning for more research and awareness. "Match It For Pratchett" was begun by fans to match his donation of $1 million dollars by selling bunches of fake lilacs, as well as stamps, jewellery and even towels (to tie in to Towel Day, which is also on May 25th). The site hasn't been updated in a couple of years, but Wear the Lilac day is alive and well!
Any earnings from this page will be donated to the Alzheimer's Research Trust

Do You Wear the Lilac?
Or does it catch you off guard?
Vimes strolled back to the house. Off the register? Was he allowed to appeal? Perhaps they thought --
The scent rolled over him.
He looked up.
Overhead, a lilac tree was in bloom.
He stared.
Damn! Damn! Damn! Every year he forgot. Well, no. He never forgot. He just put the memories away, like old silverware that you didn't want to tarnish. And every year they came back, sharp and sparkling, and stabbed him in the heart. And today, of all days ...
He reached up, and his hand trembled as he grasped a bloom and gently broke the stem. He sniffed at it. He stood for a moment, staring at nothing.'

Match It For Pratchett, Alzheimer's Disease and the Glorious Revolution of Treacle Mine Road
"I have had Alzheimer's now for the past two years plus. There's nearly as many of us as there are cancer sufferers, and it looks as if the number of people with the disease will double within a generation. It's a shock and a shame to find out that funding for research is 3% of that which goes to find cancer cures." - Terry Pratchett OBE, Patron, Alzheimer's Research Trust

Do You Know Where Your Lilac Towel Is?
Combine Towel Day with Wear the Lilac Day!
- "A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitch hiker can have. Partly it has great practical value - you can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapours; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a mini raft down the slow heavy river Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or to avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (a mindboggingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you - daft as a bush, but very, very ravenous); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.
More importantly, a towel has immense psychological value. For some reason, if a strag (strag: non-hitch hiker) discovers that a hitch hiker has his towel with him, he will automatically assume that he is also in possession of a toothbrush, face flannel, soap, tin of biscuits, flask, compass, map, ball of string, gnat spray, wet weather gear, space suit etc., etc. Furthermore, the strag will then happily lend the hitch hiker any of these or a dozen other items that the hitch hiker might accidentally have "lost". What the strag will think is that any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still knows where his towel is is clearly a man to be reckoned with."
- Douglas Adams: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galax
Both Towel Day (from Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) and Wear the Lilac Day fall on May 25th. Why not celebrate both at once with a lilac coloured towel?

- I remember reading this lens last year :-) May 25 is also my son's birthday, and he's the one who introduced me to Pratchett's Discworld work. AND this year, we even have lilacs blooming right now (usually they're done long before now, but not the year my son was born, and not this year). Our whole family would all be happy celebrating Geek Pride Day as well :-)
