Ranked #2,311 in Music, #61,747 overall

Weather Report blends the electric piano with synthesizers, classic saxophone sequences as well as African and Middle Eastern rhythms.

The Weather Report core was heavily influenced by Miles Davis electric period. WR, through all its changes in virtuoso supporting musicians, was Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter, a powerful and talented pair who defined jazz fusion.

Weather Report at a Glance

Weather Report was an influential jazz fusion band of the 1970s and early 1980s combining jazz and latin jazz with art music, ethnic music, r&b, funk and rock elements (in varying proportions throughout their career).

Chick Corea's group Return to Forever was similar in style and approach; the bands in fact shared some members, including Airto Moreira.

In a Silent Way

Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter and Josef Zawinul

This Is How It All Started. Miles Davis' "In a Silent Way" and "Bitches Brew" launched jazz fusion. Zawinul and Shorter were there as well, and followed up with Weather Report.

Black Market - The Turning Point

The band's history can be divided in two periods. Before and after the album Black Market. The first period is characterized by an exploratory and improvisational playing, and in the second period the band becomes more popular, more accessible. Coincidentally, it's also the time when Jaco Pastorious joined Weather Report.

Before Black Market

Lila-Scholer says:

Mysterious Traveller is my favorite by far. Gotta go with before.

Cinetech says:

Definitely their most creative period. Timeless masterpiece albums like I Sing The Body Electric and Mysterious Traveler.

After Black Market

coreybrown says:

I love it all, but as one of Jaco's biggest fans, I have to say "after". Mysterious Traveler is one of my favorites though.
