Weather Reading and Tracking Devices for the Home and Professional

This is about and includes information about personal weather stations for reading, tracking, and reporting weather.

About Weather Stations

Personal weather stations of today can have a wide array of performance and reporting options. In addition, there are many, many different brands and models for you to choose, along with having a range of pricing considerations.

The main consideration is choosing between a wired and wireless weather station.

Once you've decided upon wired or wireless, then it's down to functionality, performance, reliability, and ease of use.

Virtually all weather stations will read a combination of indoor temperature/humidity, remote temperature/humidity, rainfall, wind speed and direction, wind chill, dew point, and barometric pressure.

Some weather stations will allow you to connect to a personal computer (PC) as well.

Considerations before you buy:

Cabled Systems

Cabled systems will perform reliably and usually for a lower cost than solar powered wireless systems.

The potential problem is determining how you will run the wires from the sensor to your weather station, located indoors. This typically involves drilling a hole in a perfectly good wall. If you decide to do this, take care not to drill through electrical wires within the wall.

In addition, sensor signal strength can be reduced as the length of the cable length increases between the console and the sensor.

Wireless Systems

There are four concerns you need to consider before purchasing wireless weather station:
~ Location of weather station console location within your home
~ Known sources of radio frequency interference
~ Optimum siting location of sensors on your property
~ The realistic transmitting distance between the sensor and the console, as specified by the weather station manufacturer, and often determined by weather conditions.

Factors included in the distance and location, include other electrical devices and interference and any walls or other obstructions to the wireless signal. If the distance between the console and the optimal location of the sensors is greater than the wireless transmission distance, then wireless communications may not be a good option for you.

The frequency(ies) used by the weather station is also important factor. In the United States, these will typically be either in the 433 MHz range or the 906-928 MHz range. However, many cordless phones are in the 900 MHz range, and these can cause interference with your weather station. Typically, cordless phones in the 2.4 or 5 GHz range, along with wireless networking devices (typically known as 802.11b or 802.11g devices) will not cause interference to a weather station using either of these frequency ranges.
