Measuring the Weather
"Whether the weather be fine, Whether the weather be not, Whether the weather be cold, Whether the weather be hot, We'll weather the weather, Whatever the whether, Whether we like it or not." -Author Unknown
This lens focuses on real-world applications for meteorological measurements, plus advice on obtaining accurate meteorological data.
Citizen Weather Observer Program
Today's easy access to the internet makes it possible for anyone to contribute their weather station data to national and regional weather databases. For example, the Citizen Weather Observer Program is a private-public partnership with three main goals: (1) to collect weather data contributed by private citizens; (2) to make these data available for public weather services; and (3) to provide feedback to the data contributors so that they have the tools to improve the quality of their data. If you have a weather station and access to the internet, you can participate. Your real-time data will be used in NOAA weather prediction models and appear on their mesonet web page. Making your data available is simple and free. Information on how to join is available from the WX4NHC amateur radio station at the National Hurricane Center. The Weather Underground
The first internet weather service started at the University of Michigan in 1991 as a menu-based telnet interface that displayed real-time weather information around the world. In late spring of 1995, the Weather Underground Inc evolved as a commercial entity separate from the university. By fall, the official web site was launched.Their personal weather station project displays local weather station data at the bottom of each city's forecast page, with a link to the station owner's webpage if available.
WeatherBug
The WeatherBug Network includes more than 8,000 schools across the U.S. operating easy-to-use stations that integrate live, local weather data and technology into classroom learning. The WeatherBug Tracking Station is a state-of-the-art weather monitoring system that's so simple even a child can use it. And WeatherBug Achieve, an online teaching tool, automatically embeds live weather readings and images from the WeatherBug network into pre-made, interactive lessons. ClimatePrediction.net

- The Snow Booklet: A Guide to the Science, Climatology, and Measurement of Snow in the United States
- Author: Nolan J. Doesken and Arthur Judson
Publisher: Colorado State University; 2nd edition (January 1997)
ISBN: 0965105628
This short book (88 pages) describes, in simplified terms, many facets of snow--how it forms, how it falls, how it changes, how it melts, and how it affects us on the ground including the hazards it presents. Special emphasis is given to the measurement of snow--why it seems so simple and yet can be one of the most difficult meteorological measurements. Detailed instructions on how to measure snow accurately and consistently under a wide range of weather conditions are presented. - Weather Forecasting Handbook

The Storm Chasing Handbook is the definitive bible on storm chasing, packed with nearly 300 pages of storm chase history, philosophy, technique, and travel information. Using key findings from the past four decades of scientific literature, readers learn the inner workings of severe weather and dabble with the fundamentals of forecasting techniques, blended with wisdom from the author's own experiences. Many skilled chasers contribute their own wisdom in the form of anecdotes, tales, and funny stories. From target area and storm type prediction to successful, safe navigation, the Storm Chasing Handbook has it covered.
Weather Education
- JetStream
- The National Weather Service Online Weather School is designed to help educators, emergency managers, or anyone interested in learning about weather and weather safety. Information is arranged by subject beginning with global and large scale weather patterns and followed by lessons on air masses, wind patterns, cloud formations, thunderstorms, lightning, hail, damaging winds, tornadoes, tropical storms, cyclones, and flooding. Interspersed are "learning lessons" which can be used to enhance the educational experience.
- Mount Washington Observatory
- The Mount Washington Observatory is a private, nonprofit, membership-supported organization. The observatory performs hourly weather observations of "the world's worst weather" at the summit of 6,288 foot Mount Washington, the northeast's highest peak. They offer a variety of educational programs.
- EarthStorm
- K-12 educational outreach program of the Oklahoma Climatological Survey integrates learning modules with real-time weather data.
- GLOBE Program
- The GLOBE Program (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) is a hands-on international environmental science and education program. GLOBE links students, teachers, and the scientific research community in an effort to learn more about our environment through student data collection and observation.
- Windows to the Universe
- User-friendly learning system includes a rich array of documents, including images, movies, animations, and data sets, that explore the earth and space sciences and the historical and cultural ties between science, exploration, and the human experience. It is written in three reading levels approximating elementary, middle school, and high school.
- Tree House Weather Kids
- This website discusses several areas of weather: clouds, seasons, air pressure, winds, global warming, and violent weather. Activities have been included to give students hands-on experiences to work through. Some may work best as a demonstration. Take-home activities such as word games and math exercises are also included. Provided by the University of Illinois Extension.
- DataStreme Atmosphere
- Precollege teacher enhancement initiative of the American Meteorological Society trains weather education resource teachers who will promote the teaching of science, mathematics, and technology, using weather as a vehicle, across the K-12 curriculum in their home school districts.
- MSC Educational Publications
- A collection of weather and climate resources from the Meteorological Service of Canada.
- NOAA Central Library
- Encompasses oceanography, ocean engineering, marine resources, ecosystems, coastal studies, atmospheric sciences (climatology and meteorology), geodesy, geophysics, cartography, mathematics, and statistics. The library has an extensive collection of historical Coast and Geodetic Survey materials (from 1807) and Weather Bureau materials (from the 1830s). These materials include historical meteorological data, information on instruments, and metadata. The Central Library is networked to the NOAA regional and field libraries and has access to their specialized collections.
- MetEd - Meteorology Education and Training
- A joint effort of the NWS Training Center in Kansas City, Missouri, the Warning Decision Training Branch in Norman, Oklahoma, and the Cooperative Program for Operational Meteorology, Education, and Training (COMET) in Boulder, Colorado. The MetEd website is the principal location for all web-based materials produced by the three training facilities and provides information on their other training and education activities, such as classroom courses and teletraining. The site also houses selected materials developed by NWS regional science service divisions and individual forecast offices.
The Cloud Appreciation Society
You love lying in the park on a summer's day and looking for shapes in the cumulus clouds. You think a mackerel sky of puffy altocumulus stretching off towards the setting sun is one of the most beautiful sights in the world. In short, you love clouds. And yet everyone else just seems to complain about them. Are you the only one who thinks life would be poorer without these glorious 'patron goddesses of idle fellows'? No, you're not. There are others like you. Join them and become a member of the Cloud Appreciation Society. Lightning

SKYWARN
Skywarn is the spotter training program developed and sponsored by the National Weather Service. In areas where tornadoes and other severe weather is a frequent concern, the NWS recruits volunteers, trains them in storm identification and spotting procedures, and subsequently accepts the spotter's reports during episodes of severe weather. By utilizing the Skywarn volunteers, the NWS has "eyes and ears" throughout the affected area in conjunction with NWS sophisticated remote sensing equipment.Stormtrack: Skywarn - Answers some frequently asked questions about how to get started.
