Leaking air from your home can cause wasted energy and unwanted drafts during the hot and cold weather. Weatherstripping or caulking drafty spots is easy to do and very effective at lowering energy costs, not to mention cutting back on energy consumption. Here you can find some easy fixes and weatherstripping tips to get your home more draft-proof and heat efficient in no time.

The Benefits of Weatherstripping

Save cash, save energy with simple weatherstripping on your home

Even homes that are well insulated can benefit from weatherstripping and caulking to reduce air from entering/exiting the home. Is your surrounding area a little too noisy? Weatherstripping might end that unwanted noise, and will keep out critters, particles and drafts alike. On a one to ten scale (ten being the most difficult), installing new weatherstripping is a "2" difficulty. Anyone can do it.

Of all energy home improvements,

installing tight weatherstripping can be one of the most effective. It's cheap, too...you can most likely seal all your leaks for $20 or less.

To check your weatherstripping around exterior doors, a simple method is to use a flashlight. Alternatively, you can see most gaps during the day if you look at the weather stripping from the inside when the door is closed.

Determining How Much Weatherstripping is Needed

An easy formula so you don't buy too much weatherstripping (or too little!)

To see how much weatherstripping is necessary for your project, add the total edge length (perimeter) of the windows and doors together. This will give you an approximate number to go by when ordering your weatherstripping.

When applying your weatherstripping, be sure the surface is completely clean and dry. Double check the length before cutting (and ordering!). Apply weatherstripping snugly to the surface to be sure it creates a seal when closed.
