Most people know Bob Weatherwax from his many years of work with The Weatherwax Lassie Dogs; the original Collies who appeared in all of the MGM Lassie movies, the Lassie Radio Show, all of the Lassie TV series, and the two final movies, The Magic of Lassie and Lassie; Best Friends Are Forever. Bob's father Rudd owned and trained the first of these Lassie dogs, and Bob began working with them when he returned home from the military at the age of twenty, carrying thru past his father's death to do a final movie and TV series on his own. Along with representing the nine generations of Collies impeccably trained to portray an uncanny brilliance that only the Weatherwax Lassies could display, Bob ran a business training numerous dogs for television and movie work which quickly defined him as the top dog trainer in Hollywood. Today Bob still owns a Collie, and true to form, that Collie is trained as only a Weatherwax Lassie Dog could be, but his focus has turned away from Hollywood and toward establishing The Weatherwax Training Center. This is where both Bob's dream and his legacy will come together as he teaches people to train dogs The Weatherwax Way to become Therapy and Service dogs to fulfill a higher purpose for generations to come. The Weatherwax Collies who played Lassie ......And Other Famous Dogs
in association with the incredibly trained
Collies that played the role of Lassie.
From Pal, who initially portrayed Lassie in 1942,
thru Laddie, who portrayed Lassie thru 2002,
each was selected and trained by Rudd and
later by Bob.
The Weatherwax family of trainers have additionally been responsible for most of the famous dogs on film and in television. The fox terrier who played Asta in the "Thin Man" series, the spaniel who played Daisy in the "Blondie" series, the cairn terrier who played Toto in "The Wizard Of Oz", and one of the dogs who played Petey in the "Little Rascals" series represent just a few.
Today, Bob Weatherwax continues to make public appearences
where he enjoys talking with fans about his dad, his years in Hollywood, and his favorite subject; Dogs! Accompanied always by the usual team of a big Collie and a small Terrier, Bob is always equipped to delight his audience with proof that "a dog like Lassie" is one that has been trained The Weatherwax Way.
Bob and Lassie Photos
Rudd Weatherwax trained Pal to play the role of Lassie in the movie Lassie Come Home, and from there, an internationally beloved icon was born. For sixty years, Rudd, and later his son, Bob, trained a line of Collies beginning with Pal to portray Lassie in film, TV, and special appearances. The last of these dogs was Bob's ninth generation dog, Laddie. While the corporation that owns the Lassie name has continued to present dogs they call "Lassie", there have been no Weatherwax Lassie Dogs since Laddie retired from the role. Please don't confuse any dog being presented as "Lassie" today with a genuine Weatherwax Trained Dog. Here are a few pictures of Bob and Laddie, along with an old friend, Jon Provost (who played the role of "Timmy" on the "Lassie" TV series). You will find more pictures on Bob's web site:

- Why isn't something being done to stop Carol from using her dog for commercial purposes if what I am reading is true? Am I the only one this upsets? I was asked who my fav actor was growing up & I said "Lassie" Still is!! I wrote a very sincere heartfelt letter to Rob Weatherwax few yrs ago & what I would had given just to heard back he read it. I almost died when I was 8 yrs old from something I was born with & all the Lassie shows meant so much to me! I always dreamed I would meet the Weatherwax's & their collies but it was just that a dream as my health was so bad I would had never been able to travel to CA even if I had won a free trip! As a child I knew I wanted a collie so when I turned 18 yrs old on my own I answered a ad about collie pups 4 sell & when I got there it was a part collie but fell in love with her & couldn't turn her down. She lived to be almost 18 yrs old even with the vet saying she would only live to be 2 yrs! She was my best friend :) Thank you 4 all your work!
