Web copywriting is one of the most important skill you can ever acquire as webmaster. Why?

Your copy, for example, is the one that does the selling. It's not the fancy graphics or the cutting edge widget and jingles. It's not your theme, it's not your URL and it's certainly not the picture of semi-naked ladies on your website (unless, of course, you're selling those) (yes, I'm saying it's not sex that sells).

It's your copy.

The Good News

That's good news to some of you but it's certainly bad news for most. I know I didn't take it so well when I found out about it. I mean... I hate writing! But I reluctantly accepted it as fact and continued to study it.

And I'm glad I did because web copywriting is one the most profitable skill I've ever picked up. It's practically responsible for the cash that's paying my bills.

I write online. That's what I do and that's my day job so yes, I know what I'm doing. This lens is about sharing what I've learned all these years writing online with people who have trouble. I know I had (and still have) a lot questions when I was starting out so don't hesitate to ask me anything at the guestbook below!

Web Copywriting Tip #1: Crafting A Compelling Headline 

There's no doubt that the headline of a web copy is the most important element that determines its conversion rate so I'd like to start there.


  • The key to a successful headline is without a doubt, research. Yes, research requires a lot work but I can assure you that it's well worth the effort.

    Research lets you know who your potential customers really are and what are the conversations they are having in their heads. This is crucial information because if you can't resonate with them, there is no way you can grab their attention, let alone sell them.

    So the first step is getting to know your "herd" and giving them what they want (not what they need).


  • The Elements Of A Compelling Headline

  • A compelling headline is also one that contains a strong benefit that matters to a prospect. A benefit is a feature translated to something that makes a difference to the buyer's life. For example, the feature can be wireless connection. The benefit of that feature is now you don't need to deal with messy wires.


  • A compelling headline contains a USP (unique selling proposition). There should something unique about your offer and it doesn't have to a feature. John Carlton, a legendary copywriter once wrote an incredibly successful copy with a headline that starts with "One legged golfer..." The techniques he is selling is not unique, but his story is. Michel Fortin, also a legendary copywriter, wrote a successful headline that starts with "How a physically disabled boy..." Use your story as your USP and you've got yourself a unique offer.


  • Be a little emotional and passionate when writing your web copy. We have been so trained to take emotions out when writing essays in school that what we write are always boring! Open up your thesaurus and instead of using "important" news, say "ground-breaking" and instead of using "beautiful" use "ravishing".


  • Last but not least, never try to sell in your headline. The headline is meant to capture attention and that's all. Trying to sell is often a mistake I see in many other websites and it causes their copy to fail because a "selling" headline does not capture attention!

No matter how much traffic you drive to your website, if you don't convert them, you're not going to make any money. And if you don't capture at least their email address, then you'll not convert as well as you might be able to achieve.


Subscriptions Are Important

Why? Well, studies have shown that it takes approximately 7 follow ups (or 7 exposure to the same promotion) before a prospect actually turns into a customer. Rarely does anyone buy something on their first visit to a website, no matter how well written the web copy is. That's a bitter reality we web copywriters have to accept.

But fortunately, technology has improved and we now can at least follow up if they don't buy the first time. Plus, the money is always in the back-end anyway.

So it's vital to your success, to capture as many email addresses . I would venture to say that their email address is more valuable than that first front end sale you made.


How To Plan A High Converting Form

Ok, so how do you get your visitors to sign up? Here are some web copywriting tips to do that:

1. Keep your form as straightforward and short as possible. Information that you do not need at that point in the conversion process should be left out.

2. If you do need a long form, break it up into a few small parts. Careful though, don't break it up into too many small parts because according to my own tests, people tend to abandon the form if they need to click the submit button more than 5 times.

3. Make sure your form stand out from the rest of the page. You can do this by using a different colored background or using an image to draw attention to the form.

4. Don't be too picky with the format of the information they enter. Some websites actually need their customers to fill out their credit card number in a certain format, such as XXX-XXX-XXX. For God's sake, they're giving you their credit card number... take it!

5. Display your privacy policy very prominently so that people are comfortable signing up. If you need sensitive information, explain why you need it and assure them they are safe with you.

6. If you have a clear button beside your submit button, please please please make it disappear. Have you ever filled out a long form all with wrong information? Neither did anyone! But have you click on the wrong button before? So did everyone else!

7. Don't just use regular "submit" button. Use "Subscribe now to get your free course!" Even better, use graphics as buttons to grab attention.

An irresistible offer is the secret to a truly successful marketing campaign. An offer is the basis of all transaction and if your offer does not provide value to your prospect, then it would be very difficult to convince him to buy. On the other hand, with an irresistible offer, you can still be successful without a compelling web copy.

How To Put Together An Irresistible Offer

1. The first key to an irresistible is to think like your customer. Taking into account all other alternatives, how much would you spend to take away this pain? Your product should over-deliver what it promised and actually solve your customer's problems.

2. Once you come up with a price to charge, add more goodies into the package that your customers will find valuable, but doesn't cost you a dime... such as e-books. Getting 2 products is always better than getting only one.

3. Your offer has to be unique to you and you only. Your prospects shouldn't be able to go somewhere else. How to do that? Look at Starbucks. Why do you think people drop in day in and day out, despite competition right next door? Their coffee is not unique (it's certainly not the best either). But the experience when you step in is certainly unique. To me, it somehow makes you feel "cool", like you're some sort of busy sophisticated consumer. And of course, its brand. The same principles applies to McDonald's!

4. An irresistible offer comes with an irresistible guarantee. People hate taking risk. Your guarantee has to be displayed very prominently so people know you have a guarantee. Some websites I see try to hide it because they"are afraid people might claim on them". Gary Halbert once said in his seminar that unless your product really sucks, "people who asks for a refund decided to do so before they purchase". And it's true.

4. Expanding on the concept of keeping to convention, always always make sure your links are blue and underlined like this one. Put it in a different color and no one will click on it.

5. Make sure that your links change color after someone clicks on it.

6. Make your images clickable because people tend to click on images and it's frustrating to click on something that is not a link.

7. Don't design your websites to too graphic laden. It takes forever to load and don't assume everyone has high broadband speed.
