Welcome to the Web Directory Resource
This web directory resource lens is aimed at finding the best places to obtain quality lists of search engine friendly directories (mainly) and resources for software.
My aim is to help improve website and web directory development by pointing you in the right directions, e.g. for standards compliancy, design issues and even software.
I threw out my telephone directory this week and it was still shrink wrapped (hadn't been opened the whole year). I had only used online whitepages and search engines to find businesses or contacts. This proved to me that it is even more important these days to market your business and promote your website.
My name is Chris, from The 100 Lists Web Directory, and I hope you can gain something from this lens! Please contact me and let me know of good directory resources and/or if you have any questions.
I have also just launched SEO Voter and there is a directory category that will provide a great source of top directories voted by the users.
Top Tips for Submitting to Web Directories
Tips and Tricks

These are just some of the top tips that I have used. I will add to this list as often as possible because it is probably the most important list! I will also try and keep them in order of importance.
- Create a new .txt file somewhere on your pc and name it something like mysite.txt. Add all your site details (title, description, URL, email and keywords) to this file. This way, you don't have to continually retype all the details into each submission form, but instead you can copy the details from this file. I actually have a number of sites in my text file and it assists tremendously.
- Before submitting to a directory, check in what order the directory is listing the sites. If alphabetical, try and find a title that starts with a letter closer to the beginning of the alphabet. Remember numbers are lists before letters too! Don't forget, you need to be careful with this though, some directories may not approve a title that does not reflect the URL or site topic.
- I find it handy to have a Gmail account (or any of the free mail accounts) to catch all the responders and approval emails. This keeps all these types of emails out of my personal emails on my pc. I found that this has helped me too in that my Gmail account has a nice categorising system where I can use categories like "pending", "accepted", "accounts" and "other".
- Always check the Google PageRank (PR) of the home page of the directory you're submitting to. This will give you a fair idea of how popular the site is with Google. PR can be checked using the Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer or check it on any site that has a PR checker.
You can also use the free Firefox web browser and this includes the PR indicator. - Directories that have rel="nofollow" in their links to sites listed are not passing on any search engine ranking values to those sites. Hopefully, these directories can still provide the usually traffic from human visitors. Check the page source to see if this restriction is in the links.
- Most directories that charge for submissions use PayPal. If you are looking at spending some of your hard-earned money on submissions to directories that are not free, I would recommend that you create yourself a PayPal account (or similar, if you haven't got one already) to save you time. You can dedicate funds to submissions by adding whatever amount you want to limit yourself to into your PayPal account. Then each submission to a directory that uses PayPal is much easier.
