Web Gazelle Knows Aquarium Fish

Keeping freshwater aquarium fish is in Web Gazelle's blood. He has owned his own freshwater aquarium for several years. Before he owned his own tank, his brother kept a 90 gallon tank in their home with a pair of tiger oscars.

Keeping aquarium fish is a hobby that was passed down through generations. Web Gazelle's grandfather owned 3 large fish tanks. 1 Tank was home to a piranha, 1 was home to an arowana and the other was home to a small shoal of angelfish.

Because of his interest in aquarium fish keeping, Web Gazelle created a website about keeping freshwater aquarium fish. The site offers information on several areas of the hobby and includes a database of fish types that can be found in the hobby today.

Gazelles at a Glance

A gazelle ( ) is an antelope of the genus Gazella, although the three members of the genus Procapra are also widely are referred to as gazelles. Gazelles are known as swift animals; they are able to reach high speeds (as high as 50 mphThe Twisted Mind Emporium: Weird Science: Fast Animals) for long periods of time. Gazelles are mostly found in the grasslands and savannas of Africa, but they are also found in southwest Asia. They tend to live in herds and will eat less coarse, easily digestible plants and leaves.

The gazelle species are classified as part of the order Artiodactyla, family Bovidae and genus Gazella. Members of the Articodacycla order are principally distinguished by the foot; they have an even number of toes (the bovid family comprises 6 genera and 12 species). The taxonomy of the genus Gazella is a confused one, and the classification of species and subspecies has been an unsettled issue. Three species?the Red Gazelle, the Arabian Gazelle, and the Queen of Sheba's Gazelle?are extinct. All other gazelle species are listed as endangered, to varying degrees.

A recognizable example of the gazelle is Thomson's Gazelle (Gazella thomsonii), which is around 60 to 90 cm (23 to 35 inches) in height at the shoulder and is coloured brown and white with a distinguishing black stripe (as in the picture on the right). The males have long, often curved, horns. Tommies, as they are familiarly called, exhibit a distinctive behaviour of stotting (running slowly and jumping high before fleeing) when they are threatened by predators such as lions or cheetahs. This is a primary piece of evidence for the handicap principle advanced by Amotz Zahavi in the study of animal communication and behaviour.

Buffalo at a Glance

The biological subfamily Bovinae (or bovines) includes a diverse group of 10 species of medium-sized to large ungulates, including domestic cattle, Bison, the Water Buffalo, the Yak, and the four-horned and spiral-horned antelopes. The evolutionary relationship between the members of the group is obscure, and their classification into loose tribes rather than formal sub-groups reflects this uncertainty. General characteristics include a cloven hoof and usually at least one of the sexes of a species having a true horn.

In most countries, bovines are used for food. Cows are eaten almost everywhere, except in India where bovines are considered sacred by most Hindus. Some of the largest cattle breeding areas in the United States are Montana, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas.
