Starting a web business

I went to a seminar where they "taught" me and about 400 other people how we could make so much money on the web.

They served us a good lunch and the "training" went right on during lunch, late in the afternoon the sales pitch came and I bought a package. We were taught in this seminar that we should get our web sites going as soon as possible. I got a package of six sites for a considerable sum of money.

Now, let tell you Do Not do what I did. This is a waste of money, a rip off. I or anyone with a little experience can guide you to a much better and less expensive way to have a web site or a hundred sites. I have only used 1 of those 6 that I 'bought' from this company and very soon will move that site to a new server and new software for a fraction of the cost of the one I have from that company.

The first two or three months were spent trying to decide what to sell. Then the fun started.

I visited my sister in Ontario, Or. She had started a candle business and was trying to sell wholesale on a web site but had done no SEO. That is "search engine marketing". She found out that I had some web sites available and talked me into distributing candles for her. Oregon Street Candle Co. was born.
I have been working very hard since that time to learn the web software and get the web site running and working on SEO (search engine optimzation) to get customers to find my site.
If you have been considering internet marketing you should do a lot of research before you jump in. I sell candles, a search for candles on Google will yield 34,900,000 listings at this time. How do we get our sites to come up in the first page or two?

Well, it is a year since I spent all that money on these web sites.
I still have only one published and don't know what to sell on any others. We have had a few sales on the candles and are getting more traffic so I guess with time and continuing work we may be successful.

I would give a reward to anyone that came up with an idea of something that would be new or unique enough that it would be a good mover. Even a percentage if we did good.
I have had good comments about the site, ladies seem to like it and we have some fragrances that other companies like Yankee have retired from their line that are quite popular like Hearts and Flowers and Tulip which are both registered trademarks of Yankee and we have a copy of them that people say they can't tell the difference.

Almost another year and getting traffic from all over the world. I am amazed at
the people from all over the globe that check out my candle site. I have one
keyword that brings me up number one on a search on Google. If I could only get
more of my keywords to do that!

The site is still not profitable but is coming along, sure glad I have some
retirement income.

I am working on some other sites offering affiliate marketing opportunities and
tools for web marketers with some information on specific things such as weight
loss and photography. I guess you would call it a niche store kind of thing.

A lot of water under the bridge and a lot of experience gained. It seems that most of what I have learned in life has been by experience, my own! I looks like we would be more careful and learn from others but at 68 years old I guess it is hard to teach an old dog new tricks. Goto this link to learn how the old dog does it.
